Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Detroit Tiger threw a no-hitter in only his second season. He did this against the Milwaukee Brewers. Oh, and he also won the AL Rookie of the Year award the previous year (2006). Who's your Tiger?

Answer: Justin Verlander

Justin Verlander threw his no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers at Comerica Park on June 12, 2007. He struck out 12 batters in that game, and also walked 4. It was the first Detroit Tigers no-hitter since Jack Morris more than 20 years earlier.
2. This Detroit Tiger pitcher is a relief pitcher. He threw the fastest fastball in the league during the 2006 season. He threw 103mph. He was also hurt for the majority of the 2007 season with a ruptured tendon in one of his throwing hand fingers. Who is he?

Answer: Joel Zumaya

Joel Zumaya was consistently clocked throwing over 100 miles an hour in many of his relief appearences. He is a right-handed pitcher who, fittingly, has a tattoo of flames on his throwing arm. He finished the 2006 season with 97 strikeouts in only 83.1 innings.
3. This Detroit Tiger drove in 104 RBIs during the 2006 season, despite only hitting 24 home runs. He hit .298 while playing the entire season without injury. Who's your Tiger?

Answer: Magglio Ordonez

Magglio Ordonez was playing in his second season with the Detroit Tigers in 2006, after being signed as a free agent from the Chicago White Sox prior to the 2005 season.
4. I am a Detroit Tigers pitcher who saved 37 games for my team in 2006. I have played for 8 different teams in my Major League career, and this was my second stint with the Tigers. Even though I saved 37 games, I had an ERA just under 4.00 and a record of 2-6. Who am I?

Answer: Todd Jones

Todd Jones pitched for Detroit from 1997-2001 before he left and came back in 2006. Never known for his fastball, a trait Todd had was the ability to consistently throw strikes. The 2007 season marked Todd Jone's 15th Major League season.
5. This Tigers reliever has a column on 'TheSportingNews' on occasion. He writes a blog based on team functions, as well as his general performance. Who am I talking about?

Answer: Todd Jones

Todd writes in this blog from time to time, more consistently during the first half and middle of the season. He appears to have done this more frequently in the 2006 season, as there have not been many in the 2007 season.
6. This Tiger hit 27 home runs in the 2006 season, but was only able to manage a .253 batting average. He drove in 83 runs as well. Who's your Tiger?

Answer: Brandon Inge

Brandon played third base for the Tigers and was very durable, playing in 159 of the 162 team games. He did strike out 128 times, and that was reflected in his low batting average.
7. The Detroit Tigers won many one-run games in 2006. What did they use as a rally-starter in the dugout?

Answer: Big League Chew

The Tigers would always carry boxes of Big League Chew bubblegum with them for every game. When they were looking for a rally, each player (mostly pitchers), would take a bag of gum and shove the entire wad into their mouths, barely being able to chew.
8. Placido Polanco was a very valuable asset to the Tigers in 2006. He had a .295 batting average and only struck out 27 times in 461 at-bats. This contact hitter played well in the postseason, but struggled in the World Series. How many hits did he get in the entire series?

Answer: 0

Placido Polanco didn't get a single hit, and many people nationally saw him as a player who struggled under the spotlight. In 2007, he came back and had a .330+ batting average.
9. Kenny Rogers had some off-field issues just prior to the 2006 season. That season would be his first with the Detroit Tigers, after leaving the Texas Rangers. What problems did he have while in Texas, which resulted in fines and a suspension from Bud Selig, baseball's commissioner?

Answer: He broke a reporter's camera

Kenny Rogers was suspended following this stunt, which occurred during one of the Rangers' practices. He was being followed by a reporter and angrily slammed his camera into the ground as well as pushing down the reporter. Rogers issued an apology and served his suspension without protest.
10. This Tiger played outstanding in the postseason. In his starts, he surrendered 0 runs in over 20 innings of work. Who accomplished this feat?

Answer: Kenny Rogers

Kenny Rogers shut down the Yankees, Athletics, and Cardinals. One twist in the story is the suspicion that he had some sort of substance on his baseball cap while pitching that gave him an advantage. This was only speculation, and nothing more.
