Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chelsea Thomas was undoubtedly one of the best college pitchers in the country, and did a great job in the WCWS. What team did this ace pitch for?

Answer: Missouri Tigers

The Tigers were eliminated by Baylor in an incredible 13 inning game, all of which was pitched by Thomas, and for Baylor, Whitney Canon. Thomas was closing in on the record for most strikeouts ever pitched in a WCWS game when Baylor won the so far scoreless game with a walk off solo home run, well past midnight. Chelsea finished the game with 19 strikeouts, one short of the record.

Most strikeouts ever in WCWS game: 20, by Debbie Doom of UCLA, against Oklahoma State in 1982.
2. What was the host city of the 2011 WCWS?

Answer: Oklahoma City

Regionals and Super Regionals are played at selected fields, and the winners of the Super Regionals advance to one host city.
3. One of the most feared offenses in the country was provided by the Florida Gators, known as a pick-your-poison lineup. The leadoff hitter, Michelle Moulrie, was originally a threat because of her speed, but proved she too had home run power in the WCWS. She hit two out of the parks in the regular season; how many did she hit in the WCWS?

Answer: 4

The highlight of these homers is one leadoff solo home run in the first game against Alabama. In this game, Brittany Schutte also came through with a grand slam. Florida won 16-2.
4. Alabama, who had a very strong pitching staff, saw their senior ace play her last game in the 2011 WCWS. What pitcher am I talking about?

Answer: Kelsi Dunne

Backed up by freshman pitcher Jackie Traina, (aka, "The J-Train"), Kelsi Dunne pitched her last game in the second game against Florida, when their home run power proved too tough to handle.
5. The umpires' strike zones were a big problem for the Bama pitchers in the two WCWS games against Florida. Dunne and Traina kept pitching questionable balls/strikes, and the umpire called almost all of them balls. Bama coach Patrick Murphy soon had had enough of this, and complained to the umpire about the size of the strike zone. What did he compare the strike zone to?

Answer: A soup can

Murphy was then given a warning by the umpire to keep his complaints about the calls to himself. The commentators joked about it afterward, commenting that a softball can't fit in a soup can.
6. Who was the freshman ASU pitcher who pitched all through both games of the championship, punching out Florida and earning Arizona State the title?

Answer: Dallas Escobedo

Escobedo's untouchable rise ball cleared the way for the explosive Arizona State offense to win all five of their world series games, and take home the championship for the second time. This was their second title; ASU won their first 3 years earlier in 2008.
7. Of all the conferences, one was particularly well represented in the 2011 World Series. Which conference boasted four teams in the eight that were sent to the WCWS?

Answer: Big 12

Although it was a PAC-10 team that won (ASU), the Big 12 was represented by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Missouri, and Baylor. Florida was there for the SEC, Alabama for Southeastern, and Arizona State and California for the PAC-10.
8. In the WCWS, eight different Gators sent one or more out of the park. Who was the only Gator in the starting lineup that did *not* hit a home run in the series?

Answer: Kasey Fagan

Kasey Fagan did deliver in other areas, however. An excellent 3rd baseman, she hit it to the outfield more than once, and her speed brought in a run through a very close play at home in the first Alabama game.
9. The first time ASU and Florida played in the WCWS bracket, fans saw some phenomenal offense from both sides (they met again in the WCWS final). So much in fact, that they tied the WCWS record total home runs in a single game, both teams combined. How many home runs did their bats produce combined?

Answer: 7

Early in the game, ASU was ahead of Florida by four runs, and it seemed like the game would be a quick one. However, the Florida bats suddenly came alive, and turned the game into a real nail-biter. In the end, Florida had hit 3 home runs, and ASU had hit 4, tying the record set by Arizona and UCLA, on the June 8, 2010 WCWS game. ASU beat Florida 6-5.
10. One of the memorable moments of the series was after the Sun Devils had won and the Arizona coach Clint Myers was being interviewed on the field by Holly Rowe. What classic prank was played on him by his team?

Answer: Whipped cream pie in the face

When he started wiping the whipped cream off his face, he mentioned to Rowe that this had never happened to him, despite this being his second championship (his first was in 2008, with ASU). That must have been the "whipped cream on the cake" of winning the title of the best college softball team in the country!
