1. What was the original name for the PAC-10?

Answer: Athletic Association of Western Universities

The PAC-10 was established in 1959. It began with five teams (Cal, Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Washington) that were all former members of the Pacific Coast Conference, which was dissolved in 1958 due to a "pay-and-play" scandal. In 1968 it changed its name to the PAC-8, and then in 1978 it changed again to the PAC-10.
2. When the Big West Conference was formed, all the teams had one distinct thing in common. What was it?

Answer: They were all from California

The Big West Conference was founded in 1969 and originally included only teams from California. In 1979, they let the first non-California team join the conference which was Utah State. After the 2000 football season, the Big West dropped its sponsorship of football due to three of the then seven teams in the conference, dropping their football programs.

The Big East finally got serious about becoming a major football conference and added five schools. They were Miami, Temple, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Rutgers to improve there football image as a conference. As a side note, Penn State ended up joining the Big Ten Conference.

When the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association split, they both claimed to be the main conference, and the other conference was the split-off. The Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association eventually became the Big 8 conference, which was disbanded to form the Big 12 Conference.

The Ivy League was officially formed in 1954, even though the teams have been competing in sports since America started participating in sports.
