Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many European teams took part in the 16-team finals?

Answer: 10

Ten out of 16 seems a bit lopsided in a World Cup. They were England, Hungary, West Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, USSR, and Switzerland.
2. Before the tournament started, the World Cup was stolen. Who found it?

Answer: A dog named Pickles

Pickles burst on to the scene when he discovered the illustrious trophy concealed under a bush in a garden in south London. Walter Winterbottom
was the England manager prior to Alf Ramsey.
3. Why did France play Uruguay at the White City instead of Wembley?

Answer: Because Wembley refused to cancel a scheduled greyhound meeting

The nearby White City Stadium in London was used for the match which featured Uruguay and France. The White City was built for the 1908 London Olympics, but was ironically better known as a famous greyhound stadium.
4. Which of the following stadiums was not chosen as a venue for the tournament?

Answer: Anfield (Liverpool)

Although the city of Liverpool was selected to host matches, it was Everton's ground Goodison that was preferred. London, Manchester, and Birmingham were also amongst the seven cities used to stage games.
5. How many games did the great Brazilian Pele complete in the tournament?

Answer: 0

Pele was injured against Bulgaria in Brazil's first game, which they won 2-0. He missed the next match, a 3-1 defeat to Hungary before being injured in their final encounter, another 3-1 defeat this time to Portugal.
6. Who was the tournament's top scorer with nine goals?

Answer: Eusebio of Portugal

Although Eusebio was born in Mozambique, he became a legend playing for Portugal. Nicknamed the Black Panther, Eusebio starred for Benfica during their golden period when they dominated domestically and won the European Cup.
7. Pak Doo Ik scored a goal which rocked the footballing world. Which team was eliminated by his historic strike?

Answer: Italy

After losing 1-0 to North Korea, Italy returned home to be pelted with rotten tomatoes.
8. Which two teams were involved in an eight-goal thriller at Goodison Park?

Answer: North Korea & Portugal

North Korea led 3-0 after 25 minutes before Portugal awoke and scored five in reply. Eusebio scored four goals in this one game.
9. Which team did the England manager Alf Ramsey describe as 'animals'?

Answer: Argentina

Argentina met England in an ill-tempered quarterfinal which saw the South American's Antonio Rattin sent off. England won the game 1-0, but Ramsey refused to let his players swap shirts with the opposition at the end of the game.
10. Who did West Germany defeat in the semi-final?

Answer: Soviet Union

West Germany won the game 2-1.
11. Which team did not finish bottom of their group?

Answer: Mexico

Mexico finished third in England's group ahead of France. Switzerland came last in the group won by West Germany. Luckless Bulgaria were bottom of the group of death won by Portugal, whilst Chile languished at the foot of the group headed by the Soviet Union.
12. Who and what was the mascot for the 1966 World Cup?

Answer: A lion type boy called World Cup Willie

World Cup Willie was the first of a long line of future World Cup mascots.
13. During the 32 matches played, what was the average attendance?

Answer: 50,459

The 1966 World Cup attracted 1,614,677 spectators through the turnstiles. The 1994 World Cup in the United States was by far the best supported tournament of the 20th century. A staggering 3,587,538 spectators watched the 52 matches, which resulted in an average of 68,991 fans per game. Not too bad for a supposedly non-soccer country.
14. What did Mexico's Antonio Carbajal achieve at the 1966 World Cup?

Answer: First player to play in five consecutive World Cup Finals

He featured as goalkeeper for Mexico against Uruguay in a 0-0 draw. Although it sounds like a boring game with no goals, in fact it was a personal triumph for Carbajal as it was the first time Mexico had not conceded a goal in a World Cup finals match.
15. The team that won the 1966 World Cup automatically qualified for the 1970 finals in Mexico. When was the next time they would qualify?

Answer: 1982

Not that it is ever mentioned by the English media, but in fact it was England who won the 1966 World Cup. After losing to West Germany in Mexico in 1970, England failed to reach the finals in Germany in 1974, and Argentina in 1978. Eventually they did manage to qualify on their own playing merits in 1982 when the tournament was held in Spain.
