The Padres joined the ranks in 1969. They were led by manager Preston Gomez to a 52-110 record and last (12th) place. Playing in Jack Murphy Stadium, the Padres drew just barely over 1/2 million in attendance.

Answer: 1984

Led by former Oakland A's manager Dick Williams, the Padres beat the Cubs for the National League crown 3 games to 2. San Diego lost the World Series to the Tigers 4 games to 1.

Answer: 1998

The Padres have hit the 2,000,000 mark numerous times in their franchise history, but in 1998 they drew 2,555,874 in attendance. This was the first time the fans helped break that barrier. The team also helped by winning the National League title for the second time.
4. In 1992, Gary Sheffield became a San Diego Padre. What position did he play in that season?

Vaughn belted 50 big ones in 1998. Greg helped vault the Padres to the National League crown by beating the Braves, but were skunked by the New York Yankees in the World Series.

Colbert played in the Majors from 1966-1976. He started his career with Houston, before coming to the Padres in 1969. Nate wore the Padre uniform until 1975 when he became a Tiger. He hit number 163 in 1974, of his lifetime total of 173 home runs.

Answer: Benito Santiago

In 1986, Santiago began his career in a limited role for the Padres. In 1987 he was named Rookie of the Year. He was a Padre until 1992, before becoming a Florida Marlin in 1993. He was part of the Gary Sheffield trade to the Marlins.
10. Which of the following never managed the Padres?

Answer: Greg Pinchbeck

Pinchy never managed the Padres. Frank Howard helmed the team for just short of one entire season. Craig had the club for two seasons, and Zimmer managed the team in 1973.
