Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jerry Rice was the first 49er to score 1000 points in a 49er career. Which kicker's scoring record did he break?

Answer: Ray Wersching

The others were all running backs. Wersching played for 11 seasons from 1977-1987. Ray kicked 409 of 425 PATs, and 191 of 261 field goals. He totaled 979 points, breaking SF kicker Tommy Davis' mark of 738 points in 1969.
2. The 49er franchise began in 1946. In what year did the 49ers see their first playoff game?

Answer: 1957

In 1957, the 49ers finished 8-4 under head coach Frank Albert. They met the Detroit Lions in the NFL Divisional playoff game, losing 31-27. The first time the team reached NFC Championship status was in 1981, when they defeated the Cowboys 28-27, enroute to their first Super Bowl appearance against the Bengals.
3. Who was the first San Francisco 49er head coach to coach both Steve Young and Joe Montana on the same season roster?

Answer: Bill Walsh

Steve Mariucci was the only other listed that had the helm of the 49ers. Young and Montana played on the same 49er roster from 1987-1992, until Montana left for the Kansas City Chiefs. Walsh was the first to coach them both in 1987 and 1988, then George Siefert took over their reins until 1992.
4. Who was the first 49er to throw for 200 touchdowns in their career?

Answer: John Brodie

The others never played for the 49ers. The familiar number 12 of Brodie played from 1957-1973. John took the 49ers to their first playoff game in 1957 in a loss to the Lions. He appeared in two NFC Championship games in 1970 and 1971, but lost both to the Cowboys.

This was the closest that John ever came to a Super Bowl. Joe Montana broke John's record when he retired in 1992. Montana threw for 244 touchdowns. Steve Young also surpassed the 200 touchdown mark in his 49er career.
5. Which defensive player was the first 49er to intercept 50 passes in their career?

Answer: Ronnie Lott

Only Alexander was the only other 49er listed. Lott played for 10 seasons in San Francisco, leaving in 1990 for the Raiders, and later the Jets. Lott was a 10-time Pro Bowler.
6. Which 49er running back was the first to score 50 rushing touchdowns in his career?

Answer: Joe Perry

The others never played for the 49ers. Perry played for San Francisco from 1950-1960, then came back and retired in 1963. In 1475 attempts, he rushed for 7344 yards with a 4.9 average. He ran for exactly 50 touchdowns. 49er Roger Craig (1983-1990) also retired with 50 rushing touchdowns.
7. The 1981 season saw the 49ers earn the right to appear in and win their first Super Bowl in XVI. Which quarterback led the team?

Answer: Joe Montana

Montana was in his third season in the NFL when he struck it big in 1981. He threw for over 3500 yards and 19 touchdowns in the season. His 49ers defeated the Bengals, 26-21. Joe was also the Super Bowl XVI MVP.
8. The 1988 season saw the 49ers win Super Bowl XXIII over the Bengals, 20-16. In 1989, and even with a new head coach, the team won Super Bowl XXIV also over which team, 55-10?

Answer: Denver Broncos

The 49ers went 14-2 in George Siefert's first season, taking over for Bill Walsh. WR Jerry Rice was the XXIII MVP, while QB Joe Montana was the XXIV MVP.
9. In 1985, upon the arrival of wide receiver Jerry Rice, no 49er ever had 500 career receptions. When Rice left the 49ers in 2001, he had the team record with how many 49er receptions?

Answer: 1281

Rice's 19,247 receiving yards more than doubled that of Terrell Owens as a 49er. Jerry also set a team record for 176 receiving touchdowns. In 2001, Rice left San Francisco to move across the bay to Oakland for four seasons, then retired as a Seahawk after the 2004 season.
10. Which quarterback led the 2006 49ers?

Answer: Alex Smith

The others were not 49ers in 2006. Smith took every 49er snap in the season. Alex had a TD/INT ratio of 16-16. The team finished with a 7-9 record under head coach Mike Nolan. It was the 49ers' fourth consecutive losing season after the departure of Steve Mariucci after the 2002 season.
