Answer: Eric Gagne

Gagne won the AL Cy Young in 203 with the Dodgers on the strength of a 2-3 record, a 1.20 ERA, and 55 saves. Sutter won the NL CY in 1979 for the Cubs with a 6-6 record, a 2.23 ERA, and 37 saves. Bedrosian won the 1987 NL Young for the Phillies with a 5-3 record, a 2.83 ERA, and 40 saves. Davis won in 1989 for the Padres with a 4-3 record, a 1.85 ERA, and 44 saves.
2. Who was the first team to go undefeated in College World Series play in consecutive years in Division I?

Answer: LSU

LSU did it in 1996 and 1997 under Skip Bertman. USC won five consecutive College World Series under Rod Dedeaux between 1970 and 1974, but only went undefeated in World Series play in 1973. Texas won the World Series in 1949 and 1950, but were only undefeated in 1949. Miami did not win consecutive World Series before LSU's feat, but did go undefeated in 1999 and won again in 2001.
3. Who was the first kicker in NFL history to attempt more than 35 field goals in a season without missing?

Answer: Mike Vanderjagt

Vanderjagt accomplished the feat in 2003 playing for the Indianapolis Colts, going 37-for-37. Rackers came closest going 40-for-42 in 2005 for the Cardinals, which is the first 40-converted FG season in NFL history. Wilkins was 39-for-42 in 2003 for the St. Louis Rams. Del Greco was 36-for-39 for the Titans in 1998.
4. Which was the first year that a Major League Baseball All-Star Game ended with a score of 1-0?

Answer: 1968

NL 1, AL 0 in the Astrodome in Houston on August 9, 1968. In 1966 and 1967, both ended NL 2, AL 1. The All-Star Game in 1947 ended in a 1-1 tie due to rain after nine innings.
5. Who was the first team to lose by multiple goals in the finals of a soccer World Cup that their country hosted?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden lost 5-2 against Brazil in the 1958 World Cup they hosted. Brazil did lose in the finals of the 1950 Brazil World Cup to Uruguay, but only 2-1. Italy won 2-1 over Czechoslovakia in the finals of 1934 Italy. England did not host a World Cup until 1966, where they beat West Germany in the finals 4-2.
6. Who was the first college quarterback-receiver combination to connect for two 99-yard passes in NCAA Division I football?

Answer: Terry Peel and Robert Ford

Peel and Ford hooked up for a 99-yard reception first in 1970 for Houston against Syracuse. Two years later in 1972, they connected again for 99 against San Diego State. Collinsworth and Gaffney connected for 99 in 1977 for Florida against Rice, the first team to have two 99-yard receptions completed against them. Paci and Lewis achieved their 99-yard play for Indiana in 1993 against Penn State. Burris and McVea connected for 99 for Houston against Washington State in 1966.
7. Who was the first batter in Major League Baseball history to end his career with over 2000 strikeouts and at least one batting title in either league?

Answer: Andres Galarraga

Galarraga hit .370 to lead the NL with Colorado in 1993. He retired with 2003 career strikeouts. None of the other three led a league in batting during their careers, even though Jackson and Sosa retired with over 2000 Ks.
8. Who the first goalkeeper to win hockey's Hart Memorial MVP trophy in consecutive years?

Answer: Dominic Hasek

Hasek accomplished the feat in 1997 and 1998 with the Detroit Red Wings on the strength of 2.27 and 2.09 GAAs respectively. Plante won in 1962 for Montreal with a 2.37 GAA. He never won again. Worters won in 1929 for New York with a 1.21 GAA. He, too, never won again. Roy was a runner-up for Montreal in 1992, and he never won at all.
9. Who was the first player to win the NBA's Most Improved Player Award and win a scoring title later in his career?

Answer: Tracy McGrady

McGrady won a MIP Award in 2001 with Orlando. He would win the 2003 and 2004 scoring titles also with Orlando by averaging 32.1 and 28.0 points respectively. Arenas won the MIP Award in 2003 with Golden State. Arenas did not win a scoring title before McGrady. Iverson won scoring titles in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2005 with averages of 26.8, 31.1, 31.4, and 30.7, but never won a MIP. Wilkins won a scoring title in 1986 with Atlanta, the first year the MIP was awarded, but never won it.
10. Who the first player to be the runner-up for two consecutive Heisman Trophies (Division I NCAA Football MVP)?

Answer: Glenn Davis

Davis was the Heisman runner-up with Army in 1944 and 1945. He would win the award in 1946. Justice was consecutive runner-up in 1948 and 1949 with North Carolina, and would never win. Harmon was a runner-up for Michigan in 1939. He would win the following year. Bertelli was runner-up for Notre Dame in 1941 and would win two years later.
