In season one, episode number three titled 'Les on a Ledge' Les mispronounces the name of golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez as Ch-eye Ch-eye ROD-wigweeze. When corrected by Johnny, Les continues to pronounce it the same way.

In season one, episode number four titled 'Hoodlum Rock', WKRP promotes a concert by a newly popular hoodlum rock group from the UK, Scum of the Earth. When the band arrives for an interview, the staff of WKRP quickly learns they are a vile and violent group.

When asked the difference between punk rock and hoodlum rock, Blood replies that punk rockers dress deplorably and they usually don't physically attack their audiences. The members of the band were played by Michael Des Barres as Sir Charles 'Dog' Weatherbee, Peter Elblin as Blood and Jim Henderson as Sir Nigel Weatherbee. Michael Des Barres actually is a British rock singer in addition to being an actor.

Johnny is the only one to realize that since WKRP is finally becoming successful, Mother Carlson must change the format so the station will continue to lose money, thus protecting her tax shelter. As Johnny put it so well, "WKRP is not supposed to make money! That's the deal! We're set up to lose". In the end, Mrs. Carlson relents and tells Arthur to keep WKRP just the way it is.
