Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The series began by introducing us to the newly hired program director, Andy Travis. Andy immediately decided that a format switch to rock n' roll was a necessary first step to improving the station's ratings. What was the format Andy replaced?

Answer: "Beautiful Music"

Johnny came to WKRP after being fired from a Los Angeles radio station for uttering the word "booger" while on the air. During the abrupt format change Johnny destroyed a record of the Hallelujah Tabernacle Choir singing "You're Having My Baby" and as a bonus, Andy gave him permission to say "booger", which he gleefully did.
2. Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson was said to be the boss at WKRP, but in actuality he was merely a figurehead. Who had the real power?

Answer: Mama Carlson

In the final episode of the series it was revealed that WKRP was intended to lose money as a tax write-off. Mama Carlson allowed her son to "run" the station because she expected him to fail.
3. Which WKRP employee was paid the highest salary?

Answer: Receptionist Jennifer Marlowe

Jennifer was very specific about her duties: she would not take dictation, type letters, make or get coffee. In spite of these demands, in the episode "Mama's Review", it was revealed that Jennifer was the highest-paid station employee, with a salary of $24,000 per year. That's 1979 money and converts to about $80,000 in 2012.
4. Which WKRP cast member always wore a bandage or a brace?

Answer: Les Nessman

Actor Richard Sanders actually needed a bandage during the taping of the pilot due to bumping his head on a studio light. As a running gag, Sanders decided Les would always wear a bandage from that point on.
5. Apart from his lack of morals, what else was sleazy advertising account executive Herb Tarlek known for?

Answer: Wearing loud plaid suits

Herb was frequently mocked for his horrible taste in clothing which usually consisted of a white belt with matching shoes and a loud plaid polyester suit. He claimed to get his suits from a golf pro-shop in Kentucky; "no one else makes these kind of clothes anymore due to anti-pollution laws".
6. Which WKRP employee's back story included a stint in Vietnam and being a New Orleans schoolteacher?

Answer: Venus Flytrap

It was revealed later in season one that Venus' real name was Gordon Sims. He lived under assumed names because he went AWOL before he was officially discharged from the service. With Mr. Carlson's help, Venus was able to receive a general discharge and avoid legal complications.
7. In a "very special episode" two WKRP employees agreed to pose in swimsuits for Mr. Carlson's charity. Who were the models?

Answer: Jennifer and Andy

Unbeknownst to everyone, the unscrupulous photographer rigged Jennifer's dressing room and also took photos of her while she undressed. Through an elaborate charade, the WKRP gang was able to get the pictures and negatives back.
8. Which early-evening DJ was smooth, soft-spoken and tried to sound sexy while calling his listeners "my children"?

Answer: Venus Flytrap

The pseudonym "Venus" was made up "on the fly" by Andy who thought a new name would help the former "Duke of Funk's" on-air personality. Venus' real name was Gordon Sims.
9. Which WKRP employee went through a phase where he used the alter-ego "Rip Tide"?

Answer: Dr. Johnny Fever

Johnny briefly moonlighted as a TV host for a cheesy disco dance show called "Gotta Dance". He adopted the moniker "Rip Tide" because the disco aspect of this job wasn't true to his rock n' roll roots.
10. "WKRP in Cincinnati" was known for its "issue" episodes and tackled many social problems during its four season run. Which character developed and then confronted a drinking problem over the course of an episode?

Answer: Herb Tarlek

In a season 3 episode, Herb had taken to daily "three martini lunches" with guest-star Craig T. Nelson. This behavior caused Herb's sales figures to slip and he was at risk of being fired. Don't worry; everything was fixed before the end-credits rolled.
11. Toy trains, remote-control cars, rods, reels and fishing tackle occupied a great deal of this character's time. Who was it?

Answer: Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson

"I'm not a child, I'm a hobbyist" was Mr. Carlson's response to criticism of his many outside interests.
12. What character frequently wore skin-tight t-shirts, blue jeans and cowboy hats?

Answer: Andy Travis

For whatever reason, most of Andy's wardrobe seemed to be available only in boys' size medium.
13. What was the name of the fictitious art-deco office building which housed the WKRP studios and offices?

Answer: Osgood R. Flimm Building

The building which was shown for exterior shots on the show was actually the Cincinnati Enquirer Building, which is located on Vine Street in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The Cincinnati Enquirer no longer occupies this space.
14. In this episode, Les was at a shopping center to cover a promotion. His narration wound up sounding similar to the broadcast for the Hindenburg disaster. What episode was this?

Answer: "Turkeys Away"

Les' descriptions and announcing style of the ill-fated turkey give-away was meant to be reminiscent of Herbert Morrison's Hindenburg disaster narration. Les' phrase "The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement" probably best sums up this episode.
15. In a season 4 two-part episode, a terrorist group made a bomb threat against WKRP. The station was evacuated and Johnny and Venus headed to the transmitter to broadcast from there. What happened?

Answer: The transmitter was blown-up

The transmitter was destroyed but Johnny and Venus escaped in the nick of time.
The group responsible for the bombing was called "Black Monday".
