Myers, born on September 1st, 1961 in Providence, Rhode Island was credited, per the opening credits, with writing this episode of "The West Wing." She wrote a total of five episodes for the series. Writing episodes for "The West Wing" was her first writing credit for any primetime drama series.

He won in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. At the 2000 Primetime Emmys, the other Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series nominees were Michael Badalucco for "The Practice", Steve Harris For "The Practice", Dominic Chianese for "The Sopranos", and John Spencer for "The West Wing." He received additional nominations, in the same category, in 2001 and 2002 but he lost both years.

About a year prior to this episode, the real life story of Matthew Shepard's murder due to being gay sparked attention to amending the federal hate crimes law to include crimes committed over sexual orientation.
