Bruce Wayne managed to get on the phone with The Penguin after hearing of Barbara's abduction. On the line, he requested that The Penguin let Barbara go in exchange for any amount of money he wanted. The Penguin responded by laughing Bruce off, stating how money was hardly his desire when it came to Barbara.

Alfred spoke with Reverend Hazlitt in one scene when The Penguin's cohorts arrived and thought Alfred was a minister. They took him back to The Penguin's hideout so their boss could request that Alfred perform a marriage between him and Barbara. When Alfred went into the room where Barbara was, she started climbing out the window while having Alfred swear to not let them know about her escape.
