Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Richard and Hyacinth have a son who is away at university, and Hyacinth likes to tell everyone about him. What is his name?

Answer: Sheridan

Sheridan is the only son of the Buckets, and is away studying at university. He doesn't physically appear in the programme, but his phone calls keep him in touch with what is happening. When Sheridan phones, Richard knows that he is in need of money, and is heard to say to Hyacinth - "No more money this month".

Tarquin is Sheridan's friend from university. The others are made up.
2. When Hyacinth and Richard go away to Violet's cottage for a few days, Hyacinth packs her crystal glassware. Why?

Answer: Because Bruce's glassware of naked ladies is distasteful

Violet is one of Hyacinth's sisters, and as she married a turf accountant, and has a "swimming pool, sauna, and room for a pony," She is referenced constantly throughout the show. Hyacinth has two other sisters, Rose and Daisy, who, living in a council house, are consequently less well thought of.
Hyacinth also disapproves of Daisy's husband, Onslow, who is portrayed as a slob.
3. Hyacinth likes to be seen as a "pillar of the community" and likes to offer lifts to people. What is the name of one particular lady who is offered a lift by the Buckets?

Answer: Mrs Fortescue

"Oh, not Mrs Fortescue" was often Richard's reply, when Hyacinth offers her a lift. Richard doesn't enjoy taking Mrs Fortescue anywhere in the car, as every time he tries, he gets hit with her walking stick.

This episode was called "Driving Mrs Fortescue", and was the second episode of season two.
4. Hyacinth's neighbour, Elizabeth, is frightened of being invited around for coffee. However, her brother, Emmet, has his own qualms about Hyacinth. What does he fear will happen when Hyacinth spots him?

Answer: She will sing at him

Elizabeth's brother, Emmet, works in musical theatre, and as soon as Hyacinth finds this out, she uses any opportunity she can to "impress" Emmet with her singing ability. This leads to Emmet's response - "She'll sing at me", rather than to me.

Emmet's problems get worse when Hyacinth finds out he is rehearsing a play called "The Boyfriend".
5. Never missing a chance to mingle with the socially acceptable, Hyacinth tries to help find a gun-shy dog, for lady of the manor Bunty. She spends her time making cocktails for Bunty, whilst Richard is sent to look for the dog. What is the name of the dog?

Answer: Zoe

In this episode, Hyacinth borrows Violet and Bruce's country cottage and prepares a barbecue. While looking for the lost dog, Richard stumbles on the name of Hyacinth's Daddy's new lady friend, a Polish lady, who was previously referred to as "Mrs Thing".
6. To appear as though they belong in their adopted social class, Hyacinth and Richard visit a Country House sale. Richard keeps a lid on Hyacinth's spending, allowing her to bid on the last lot of the day, which they get. What did they buy?

Answer: Gooseberry wine

To celebrate her purchase of six bottles of Lady Ursula's "home-made gooseberry wine", Hyacinth insists on having a glass or two with Lady Ursula's son and ends up tipsy.

Hyacinth and Richard take a bottle of the wine to Daddy, and Hyacinth collapses into the door of Onslow and Daisy's house.
7. Hyacinth would like to become a councillor, and so volunteers her services at the charity shop one day. While Elizabeth, Hyacinth, and Mrs Councillor Nugent are sorting out donations, Hyacinth's sister, Rose, arrives with some old underwear. Why is she donating it?

Answer: She is giving up men

This episode is called "The Charity Shop" and is the fourth episode of the first series of the programme.

Rose is donating her underwear after she has broken up with her latest boyfriend, a Mr Blankensop. When Hyacinth spots her coming towards the shop in a short skirt, she takes in the donations, as she doesn't want Mrs Councillor Nugent to see. Just before the arrival of Rose, Mrs Councillor Nugent was talking about how badly young people dress.

Incidentally, Mrs Councillor Nugent is the only person in the programme that can call Hyacinth Mrs Bucket, and not be corrected.
8. After Richard's early retirement, Hyacinth is delighted with the amount of free time they will have to spend together. In celebration, Hyacinth and Richard go looking for an old settlement. From what era are the remains they are looking for?

Answer: Iron Age

This episode is called "Iron Age Remains" and was the second episode of series three.

Hyacinth is revelling in the number of cultural pursuits herself and Richard can now partake in. While examining the ground, Hyacinth stumbles upon some "lumps and depressions", which she deems to be significant. Richard finds himself up a tree, so that he can get a better view of the site. The episode ends with Hyacinth appearing to be talking to a tree - Richard was ignoring her, as he was examining the area.
9. Always wanting to feel as though she is of some use to the Ladies Committee, Hyacinth volunteers her services to collect the guest speaker, who is travelling by train. Who exactly is the guest speaker Hyacinth and Richard go to meet?

Answer: The Commodore

Hyacinth has a distinct impression of what a Commodore will look like, and sees fit to demand an appropriate welcome for him. Railway staff are dumbfounded by her attempts to get a red carpet to mark the occasion. Her day goes from bad to worse, as despite singing sea shanties on the platform, she is unable to find the Commodore.
10. While Richard has a fungal infection, diagnosed as Athletes Foot by the doctor, but deemed to be Gout by Hyacinth, the Buckets are shopping for new worktops for their kitchen. When Hyacinth finds a colour she likes, she is told that there isn't enough of it left for their kitchen. What colour was Hyacinth looking at?

Answer: Angel Gabriel Blue

The kitchen salesman is not impressed when Hyacinth "test-drives" the worktops on sale by putting food on them - "to see how well they cope with spillages". After divine intervention, in the shape of the Vicar, Hyacinth decides on Angel Gabriel Blue, only to be told that there is none left. Hyacinth is not pleased when she visits Daisy and Onslow, and she finds some Angel Gabriel Blue worktop at their house. To make the situation worse, Onslow found the material in a tip. Needless to say, Hyacinth changes her mind about what colour worktops she wants.
