Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The show starred Martin Milner as Officer Pete Malloy and Kent McCord as Officer Jim Reed. Officer Reed is fresh from the LAPD Academy. How many years of experience does Officer Malloy have?

Answer: 7

Officer Malloy has 7 years of experience under his belt which is why he is Officer Reed's training officer.
2. When the officers get a call, the dispatcher starts of by saying, "1 Adam-12...". What does the '1' designate?

Answer: The Division number

LAPD is divided into 4 bureaus which have 5 or 6 divisions each, for a total of 21.
3. What does "12" refer to?

Answer: The District they are assigned.

Each of the 21 divisions is divided into districts. Most of the cars patrol their own district.
4. What does "Adam" refer to?

Answer: A two person police car.

Other car designations are X-ray-an extra roaming car without a designated district. The letter K is for detectives. L is for field supervisors. Neither King nor Lincoln (police phonetic alphabet) were used for these cars like Adam and X-ray.
5. In the first episode, Officer Malloy gets fresh from the LAPD Academy Officer Jim Reed. Oddly, Malloy is going to submit his resignation that night at the end of the shift. Why was he going to resign?

Answer: His best friend was killed in the line of duty.

Malloy and his best friend, Tom Porter, went into the Academy together. Officer Porter is shot to death in the line of duty. Officer Malloy has to tell Mrs Porter and thinking about his own future has decided to resign. Oddly, this was not explained on the show until about 1/3 of the way through season 3.
6. Officer Malloy decides to not resign after all. What changed his mind?

Answer: He thinks breaking in Reed will help him with his frame of mind.

He felt he would be a good mentor to young officer Reed. They remained partners for 7 seasons. The last few episodes alluded that Malloy was ready to move on to more of a supervisory role and Reed would become a training officer.
7. The division that Officers Malloy and Reed are assigned to is debatable. In an episode of "Dragnet 1967" they were in Sunset Division. The exterior shots of the station were Rampart and North Hollywood Divisions adding further confusion. But based on the "1" designation at the beginning of their call sign, what division are they assigned to?

Answer: Central

Rampart is division 2 so if they were Rampart, they would be designated 2 Adam-12. North Hollywood would have them as 14 Adam-12. Sunset Division doesn't exist.
8. Officer Malloy is in pursuit by himself in the squad car, goes off the road and is severely injured. The radio was having transmitting problems just before and no one knows where he is and he is unable to transmit his location. Officer Reed ultimately finds him at what Los Angeles landmark?

Answer: Griffith Park

His predicament is further complicated by a thief who takes the shotgun away and rips the microphone from the malfunctioning radio and that the truck is jammed closed so he can't access the flares. He was also hampered by a broken leg and he theorized he had internal bleeding.
9. The supervisor that Officers Reed and Malloy usually report to is a sergeant. What is his name?

Answer: MacDonald

Known casually as just Mac (his first name is never mentioned) and in the field as 1 L-20, he was the go to guy when they needed a supervisor whether they needed extra equipment (such as tear gas) or accused of theft. He was played by William Boyett and appeared in 129 episodes. Boyett also appeared as a cop in 65 episodes of "Highway Patrol". Producer Jack Webb recruited him to appear in "Dragnet 1967" and "Emergency!" as well.
10. Toward the end of the run, Officer Malloy fills in for Sgt MacDonald and Reed is made a training officer. One of his trainees was Dana Hall. What was unusual about Officer Hall?

Answer: A woman

This was 1975 and until then, police women were relegated to non-field jobs. Some of those duties included transporting female suspects to the women's jail, looking after unsupervised children and desk jobs among other jobs. Played by JoAnn Pflug, Officer Hall isn't well accepted by the other male officers. Officer Wells (who is generally a jerk anyway) makes many snide remarks to/about her until she saves him from getting beat up at an out of control rock concert. Officer Reed DOES accept her for what she is, a cop and they tend to get along.

There was an episode that Reed and Malloy had a Commissioner tag along for a shift. She was played by Juanita Moore.
