Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which soap opera writer created Erica?

Answer: Agnes Nixon

Agnes Nixon, often called "The Queen of the Modern Soap Opera" due to her excellent contributions to the industry (mainly for creating the soap operas "One Life To Live", "All My Children", and "Loving" as well as writing "Guiding Light", "Another World", and "As The World Turns" to much critical acclaim), created the legendary character of Erica Kane back when "AMC" debuted in January of 1970. Nixon modeled the character after a character she wrote for on "Another World" named Rachel Davis. Susan Lucci, the actress who has played Erica since the show's inception, has said Erica Kane is probably the best role written for a woman. Wisner Washam, Megan McTavish, and Lorraine Broderick have all been head writers for "All My Children" at one point but did not create Erica.

When Susan Lucci accepted her first Emmy win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series after nineteen nominations in 1999, she told Agnes Nixon, in her acceptance speech, "You changed the face of the medium we work in. I am so grateful to have been placed in your hands. Thank you so much for creating the part of Erica Kane and for allowing me to part of your vision full of such humanity and passion and vision," and then finished her speech.
2. In 1970, Erica gave a speech to Mona detailing what she wanted in a man. What did she say her man would have written all over him?

Answer: Success

In one of Erica's most famous scenes, she ranted to mom Mona what she wanted in a man and claimed he would have success written all over him before their marriage even started. This speech of Erica's showed her drive to land a man. Deep inside, though, Erica was nursing the scars of her father's abandonment when she was a little girl. Erica was afraid, at times, that she was simply unlovable due to her father's abandonment.
3. At what location did Erica tell her friend in 1971 that she wanted to be special and that she would be?

Answer: The malt shop

Erica told her friend at the malt shop that she wanted to be special, she would be, and it turned out to be true! Her friend was telling her to stop scheming to get Phil Brent away from Tara but Erica, being the schemer she was, would not listen. This episode was featured in February of 2005 on Soapnet in an "I Love Lucci" marathon.

Other episodes that were featured in that marathon were Erica modeling at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Tom Cudahy finding out Erica had been taking birth control pills behind his back, Erica's wedding to Jeremy where she attempted to break him out of prison via a helicopter, Erica giving birth to Bianca, and Jack and Erica breaking up in late 1991.
4. Erica went to Dr. Greg Madden in 1973 to have an abortion (but he transplanted her fetus into his wife!). Who played Dr. Madden?

Answer: Ian Buchanan

Buchanan, a Daytime Emmy winner, portrayed Dr. Greg Madden from June of 2005 to June of 2006. He had previously starred on the soap operas "General Hospital" and "The Bold and the Beautiful." One of his film credits includes starring in the Jodie Foster film, "Panic Room." In one of the show's most controversial stories, Erica's baby, that she thought she had terminated right after Roe v. Wade was decided, was transplanted from her womb into that of Dr. Madden's wife.

Her son with Jeff Martin, Josh Madden, would be born several months after this and appear in 2005. Dr. Madden was buried alive in June of 2006 and his dead body discovered on The Fourth of July (approximately one month later). Tad Martin was revealed to be the one who buried Dr. Madden alive and thus caused his death. Colin Egglesfield played the recast Josh Madden from September of 2005 to January of 2009, Scott Kinworthy originated the role of Josh in June of 2005 and played him until September of 2005, and Michael Sabatino was the recast Dr. Jonathan Kinder from late 1995 to late 1996.
5. Who was Erica's first major female rival?

Answer: Tara Martin

Although Brooke is considered to be Erica's biggest female rival, Erica first did battle with Tara Martin to win over Phil Brent's affections. In a move that upset many, Erica told Phil that his biological parents were Amy Parker and Nick Davis. Phil thought that his biological parents were Ruth and Ted Brent. Erica would then spar with Mary Kennicott over Jeff Martin and then moved on to fighting with Brooke English, claiming that Brooke had her former lovers (in Erica's words, "my leftovers") over the years. Erica never sparred with Phoebe.
6. In the mid 1980s, who rescued Erica when she dangled on a window ledge after getting off scaffolding that fell to the ground?

Answer: Tom Cudahy

Jeremy, Natalie Marlowe, and Erica were stuck on scaffolding and Jeremy decided to swing both Natalie and Erica over to the other side, one at a time. Jeremy swung Natalie over first since she was pregnant. Once he got Natalie to the other side, he swung back to try and rescue Erica.

His hand touched Erica's but he did not grab her. The scaffolding fell and Erica grabbed on to the window ledge. Tom came running through and saved Erica from falling.
7. In 1994, Erica ran a stop sign and plowed into whose car?

Answer: Dimitri Marick's

Erica was driving with Opal one night and Opal alerted her to the fact that she had run a stop sign. Opal then screamed at Erica to stop, to which Erica slammed the brakes but she hit Dimitri's car (at this time, Dimitri and Erica had been officially divorced). Dimitri became upset with her but that did not stop him from reconciling with Erica shortly after and remarrying her on New Year's Eve of 1994.
8. At the Women in Media Awards ceremony in 1996, who spilled wine on Erica's dress?

Answer: Liza Colby

Erica was nominated for Woman of the Year at this ceremony but, before she was revealed as a winner, Liza had accidentally spilled wine on Erica's dress. Erica scrambled to get a new dress (it was revealed during Myrtle's tribute in December of 2008 that Myrtle had gotten the stain out of her dress), popping some painkillers in the bathroom beforehand, and appeared in a red dress right as Adam announced the nominees for Woman of the Year. Erica won, went up to the podium to accept her award, and, instead of giving a nice acceptance speech, she lashed out at all of Pine Valley while drugged up on the painkillers she had taken earlier (Erica had become addicted to these drugs many months earlier). Erica ran off to Mona's grave and that is where Mona's voice (from Erica's head) convinced Erica to beat her drug addiction. Erica threw her painkillers away, went home and saw Myrtle there, and admitted she was an addict and needed help. Erica eventually kicked the habit and beat her drug addiction.

Many "AMC" fans believe that Susan Lucci should have won her first Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress over the drug addiction story.
9. Erica admitted herself to The Betty Ford Center to beat her addiction to prescription painkillers. Her roommate there was addicted to what illegal drug?

Answer: Heroin

Myrtle convinced Erica to check herself into The Betty Ford Center (founded by former First Lady, Betty Ford) and Erica went there to get clean. Her roommate turned out to be a heroin addict, to which Erica did not like. Erica and her roommate did not get along at first but they became good friends immediately.

When Erica said goodbye to her friends and the staff at The Betty Ford Center, she told her roommate she would miss her the most.
10. To what city did Erica go to in 1999 to have reconstructive surgery on her face to get rid of her scar?

Answer: Rio De Janeiro

David Hayward got Erica in touch with a world renowned plastic surgeon that could help repair her face. He was located in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil so Erica flew down there in June of 1999 to have surgery that would eliminate her scar. The operation was a success and Erica's scar disappeared.
