Lowery took on the role of Jake during this time (it was also, in between Lowery's sting as Jake, that he went by that name and decided he no longer wanted to be called "Joey"). During this time period, Jake married Gillian Andrassy, believed he was Colby's biological father (Adam was. Adam switched his sperm with Jake's at the clinic where Liza was artificially inseminated and, hence, his sperm was used to help sire Colby), and had a brief relationship with Belinda Keefer.

Jake is the half brother of Jeff Martin since they share the same father in Joe Martin but have different mothers (Jeff's mother is Helen Martin whereas Jake's mom is Ruth Martin). Before Aidan rescued Jake from Darfur in May of 2008, Jake was first rescued by Ryan Lavery, Gillian Andrassy, and Adrian Sword in Chechnya many years ago. He was in trouble in this war torn region and needed some assistance in getting out of harm's way. That was when Ryan, Gillian, and Adrian went there to get Jake and they succeeded.

Jake and Angie teamed up to bring David down so Jake decided he would steal pills from the medicine cabinet at Pine Valley Hospital and plant them at Wildwind, where David lived. Jake and Angie broke into Wildwind and planted the pills there and then left. David got proof that Angie broke into his home and had Jesse arrest her. David suspended Angie from her duties at the hospital but reinstated her when Jesse issued him an ultimatum (Jesse got "proof" that David had illegal drugs at Wildwind since Tad planted the illegal drugs there. Jesse told him, if he did not reinstate Angie and drop the breaking and entering charges against her, he would arrest him for illegal drug possession).

Vassey was Emily Ann Sago from 1998 to 1992 on "AMC." She was born on August 25th, 1972, in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was on the primetime hit, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", and guest starred for one episode on the now defunct series, "Dharma & Greg", back in 2000. Vassey can be seen in movies like, "Pursuit of Happiness", "Man of the House", and "9mm of Love."

Gillian was married to Jake at this time but broke the news to him that she wanted to be with Ryan. This hit Jake hard but he agreed to divorce Gillian. Around their divorce, Gillian miscarried her child with Jake. Ryan and Gillian remarried in April of 2001 and Gillian died two months later as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.

Jake started in Kenya when he was with Doctors Without Borders. A couple of years later, he was joined by his brother, Jeff Martin, and his nephew, Jamie Martin, in providing medical care with this organization. When Jake returned to Pine Valley in May of 2008, he wanted to go back to Africa to help the people there but his biological parents persuaded him to stay in town.
