Ray MacDonnell, the actor who plays Joe, is an original character and has been on the show since its debut on January 5th, 1970! Aside from his role as Dr. Joe Martin, MacDonnell starred on the now defunct soap opera, "The Edge of Night", and can also be seen on the ABC made for TV video, "All About Erica."

MacDonnell was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Emmy at the 2004 Daytime Emmys for his outstanding and long career in daytime television. Other recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Emmy that year were Rachel Ames of "General Hospital", John Clarke of "Days of our Lives", Jeanne Cooper of "The Young and the Restless", Eileen Fulton of "As The World Turns", Don Hastings of "As The World Turns", Frances Reid of "Days Of Our Lives", Helen Wagner of "As The World Turns", Ruth Warrick of "All My Children", and Anna Lee of "General Hospital." Lee passed away one week prior to the 2004 Daytime Emmys so her son, Jeffrey Byron, accepted the award on her behalf.

Dimitri came over to the Martin home to talk to Gloria and Joe told Dimitri to stay away from her. Dimitri barged past Joe and went into the house. This was when Joe collapsed and had a heart attack but he survived. Dimitri and Gloria married shortly after this but divorced after about just six months of marriage.

Kathy was adopted by the Mershons and she came to the Pine Valley scene in 2006 when her adoptive parents were in an accident and died. Julia had custody of Kathy until Tad found out Kathy was his daughter with Dixie (Julia died shortly before he found out about this). Once Tad got custody of Kathy as her biological father, she adopted the last name of Martin.

This has not been mentioned a whole lot but Joe's father is Henry Martin. His mother was Kate Martin, who was considered to be a Saint by many of Pine Valley. Henry died before Joe appeared on the show's first episode and Kate passed away in the mid 1980s.

Joe and Ruth started out as very good friends when they worked at the hospital (he was a doctor and she was a nurse) but Ruth was married to Ted Brent. Ted died in a car accident and Joe and Ruth started to date shortly afterwards. They married, for the first time, in 1972.

Joe and Ruth married for the first time in their living room at the Martin home. The Martin home was an original set for the show until it got destroyed for the show's storyline in 1994 when a tornado hit Pine Valley. There is a picture of Joe and Ruth's first wedding in the book, "All My Children: The Complete Family Scrapbook" by Gary Warner, released in 1995 to commemorate the show's 25th anniversary.
