Marcy Walker originated the role of vixen Liza Colby in 1981 and continued to play the part until she left the show in 1984. In 1984, Alice Haining was recast as Liza but was on for a short period of time due to fans' disapproval of her portrayal. In April of 2009, Jamie Luner was recast as Liza Colby. Kim Delaney originated and played Jenny Gardner on "AMC" from 1981 to 1984 (Jenny was killed off in 1984).

In 1989, Walker won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress for her role of Eden Capwell on the now defunct NBC soap opera, "Santa Barbara." Other Daytime Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress, that year, were Susan Lucci of "All My Children", Elizabeth Hubbard of "As The World Turns", and Jeanne Cooper of "The Young and the Restless."

Liza was desperate to win the Miss Junior Pine Valley Contest but heard that it was likely Jenny Gardner would win. With the help of her friend, Amanda Cousins, Liza fixed the results so she could win the contest. Liza did win the Miss Junior Pine Valley Contest but her crown was taken away when it was revealed she cheated.

In one of the show's most intriguing storylines, Tad "The Cad" Martin dated both Liza Colby and her mother, Marian Colby, at the same time in 1983. Eventually, Liza and Marian figured out Tad's scheme and both of them broke up with him. Liza swore, to both Tad and Marian, that she would never have anything to do with either of them again. Eventually, Liza forgave both Tad and Marian and is close with both of them to this day.

Liza's past, as a bratty child, was revealed, in the early 1980s, when we found out she stole a medal, while in elementary school, from a student that won the Spelling Bee. Liza did give the medal back, while she was still a child, to the student but not without a fuss. This established Liza's reputation as a troublemaking schemer.

Liza and Jesse Hubbard butted heads, many times throughout the early 1980s, but their feud became very serious when she falsely accused Jesse of rape. Jesse ran off to New York City, with Jenny Gardner, right after Liza made her false claim of rape. Liza, eventually, came forward and confessed that she lied about Jesse raping her and no charges were ever filed against Jesse.

Adam and Liza came up with a scheme, in late 1996, to make Tad Martin and Brooke English jealous. They decided to throw a wedding, in the hopes that either Tad or Brooke would object to them marrying. Surprisingly, neither Tad nor Brooke objected to Adam and Liza tying the knot at the wedding at Chandler Mansion. Adam thought Liza would, then, say she would not take him to be her husband. Liza shocked Adam, and everyone else in attendance, when she said "I Do" to being Adam's husband. Adam and Liza were pronounced husband and wife.

While many women in Pine Valley have miscarried, Liza is one of few to have more than one miscarriage. Her first miscarriage was in 1997 when she lost hers and Adam's baby after an airplane, which Liza was a passenger of, malfunctioned. In 2001, Liza miscarried Ryan Lavery's child but it was never specified what caused the miscarriage.

Liza decided to have a baby via artificial insemination and she asked several men if they would donate his sperm, the first of which was Tad Martin. Tad denied Liza's request so she asked Jake Martin. Jake agreed to donate his sperm but, right before Liza was inseminated, Adam switched Jake's sperm sample with his to be the father of Liza's baby. David offered to be Liza's sperm donor but she told him she was not interested in him being the father to her child. Liza found out that Ryan went to the clinic, where she got inseminated, to donate his sperm in the hopes that he would be the father of Liza's baby. Ryan's sperm was never used to create a child, with Liza, but it was used to create a child with Annie Novak.
