Answer: Dorothy Lyman

Before Jill Larson was tapped to play Opal in 1989, Lyman portrayed Opal from the early to mid 1980s. Lyman won two Daytime Emmys while she played Opal. Her first win was for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1982. Other nominees that year were Elizabeth Lawrence of "All My Children", Meg Mundy of "The Doctors", and Louise Shaffer of "Ryan's Hope." Her second win was for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1983.

Other nominees that year were Susan Lucci of "All My Children", Leslie Charleson of "General Hospital", Erika Slezak of "One Life To Live", and Robin Strasser of "One Life To Live."

Opal and Jenny came to town, together, and Opal forced her to waitress at Foxy's, a sleazy bar. Jenny's ambition was to become a model and that dream of hers came true when she went into modeling. Jenny fell in love with Greg Nelson and they are one of the show's most popular supercouples of all time.

Amanda had a date on the day that Erica modeled at The Met and went to Opal's Glamorama to have her hair done. Opal looked through her appointment book since Amanda did not have an appointment and Amanda commented that she heard one of Opal's hair stylists was very good. Opal said that he had been booked so she would have to design her hair. Amanda got her hair designed for her date.

This episode appeared on Soapnet's "I Love Lucci" marathon that aired in February of 2005 to commemorate Susan Lucci's 35th year of playing Erica Kane on "All My Children."

Jenny died as a result of a jet ski explosion that Tony Barclay rigged to explode (it was Greg Nelson's jet ski but Jenny rode it instead of Greg). Opal was not present at her funeral since she was lost in The Australian Outback and nobody could find her to tell her the bad news. Soon after this, Opal left town.

Even though this has not been mentioned much, Opal's second husband was Ralph Purdy. Her first husband was Ray Gardner, with whom she had two children, Tad and Jenny (Tad was adopted by Joe and Ruth Martin). Opal married Palmer Cortlandt in 1990 and divorced him approximately nine years later.

Opal thought that this gala was called The Venutian Ball so she arrived to the party dressed as an alien. At The Venetian Ball, Liza pushed Mia out of a window since she thought Mia had an affair with Adam (Liza and Adam were married at the time). Opal continued to dress awkwardly at events, such as The Mardi Gras Ball in February of 2006.

In a rare but funny moment, Opal called up Jack on her cell phone and told him she had an S.O.S. at S.O.S. She saw Erica at S.O.S. drinking alcohol and Erica had gone to rehab about eight years prior to this to kick her addiction to painkillers. When she left rehab, she made a vow that she would never get addicted to drugs or alcohol again. Soon after this, Erica left for Las Vegas and was a showgirl there.

When she returned to Pine Valley, her closest family and friends staged an intervention, in which she decided she would go to rehab but, this time ,to kick her addiction to alcohol. Erica successfully kicked her alcohol addiction.

Opal found out that Palmer had an affair with Janet Green (who was an accountant for the chicken shack that Opal and Palmer owned at the time) and she told him she was going to file for divorce. Palmer let her know that Janet had blackmailed him after they had an affair. Opal decided to stay with Palmer but she officially divorced him when Adrian Sword and Mike Roy revealed that Palmer had stolen Nazi art paintings and Palmer kept this a secret from her.

Answer: Opal and Bianca are not related

Even though Opal is best friends with Bianca's mother, Erica, they are not related. A couple of people related to Opal are Pete Cortlandt (Opal's son with Palmer) and Jenny Colby Martin (Opal's granddaughter since Jenny is Tad's daughter).

Opal disliked Tina and wanted to ruin her date so she decided to dye her hair blue. Tina freaked out over this and blasted Opal. Despite this, Opal's license to style hair was not revoked and The Glamorama remained in business for another year (Opal closed it down in 1984 when she left Pine Valley. She reopened The Glamorama in 1999 and hired Becca Tyree to work for her).
