On the night of the first annual Crystal Ball in December of 1997, Dmitri wound up injured when a tree fell on him after it was struck by lightning. Gloria was on duty at the hospital that night, giving aid to people involved in a bus crash. Ryan told Gloria he suffered whiplash as a result of the crash but Gloria, being a former con artist herself, saw through him and realized he was never on the bus.

When Dimitri was admitted to the hospital, he needed a blood transfusion to save his life. Gloria recognized that Ryan's blood type was a match for Dimitri and threatened to turn him in for insurance fraud unless he donated his blood. Ryan consented to donate his blood to Dimitri and Dimitri would up living.

Ryan was hired as a WRCW salesman (WRCW are the call letters for Pine Valley's TV station) and flirted with Erica in order to get her to advertise with WRCW. Erica agreed to sponsor with WRCW but only to get evidence to turn Ryan in for setting up kick backs. Ryan realized Erica was threatening to inform everyone of Ryan's scam and threatened to silence her but he was not successful. Erica went straight to Liza to tell her about Ryan's scheme. Liza was not happy, to say the least.

Liza blasted Ryan right after Erica came to her about Ryan's scam to bilk her out of her money through advertising with WRCW. She was going to turn him in to the police but then came up with a better idea. She told Ryan that she would not turn him into the police if he got married.

At this time, Gillian had been arrested for prostitution and the INS (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Services) was about to deport her. Gillian realized that she could not be deported unless she was married so she proposed to Scott. Scott accepted but, on their big day, Ryan stormed into the church and wooed Gillian over into marrying her (Gillian really thought that he had a lot of money and Ryan also thought she was rich. Neither one was rich!). Even though Ryan and Gillian married for business reasons, they later fell in love with each other and went on to become a popular supercouple.

Ryan and Gillian went on the lam when he got out of jail but they were not alone. Hayley assisted them in their getaway but Hayley eventually got caught and was arrested for aiding and abetting Ryan. This put a temporary strain in Hayley's relationship with Mateo.

Even though Gillian is considered to be Ryan's soulmate, they never created a child together. After Gillian died, Ryan accidentally burned down a turret at Wildwind and made it out alive only to encounter Liza and have sex with her that eventually turned into a short term affair for Ryan and Liza. Liza became pregnant with Ryan's baby but had a miscarriage in late 2001, for which Ryan blamed Adam for causing. Greenlee went behind Ryan's back in 2005 to have his baby when he told her he did not want children due to his past problems with his abusive father. Greenlee stole Ryan's sperm from Greg Madden's fertility clinic and secretly had herself artificially inseminated with his child.

When Ryan found out about this, he drove his motorcycle off a cliff and was presumed dead.

When this happened, Greenlee had a miscarriage. Annie became pregnant in 2008 with Ryan's child when she found out his vasectomy never took place and he could continue to create children. Annie lost her baby in the Summer of 2008. Since Gillian died in the Summer of 2001 and her heart was transplanted into Laura Kirk English, Ryan cannot ever have a child with her.

Ryan temporarily worked at SOS (the nickname for "Sounds of Salsa") as a bartender for the first time before he went on to work for Cambias Industries. Hayley and Mateo owned SOS after their first restaurant, Holidays, was destroyed when the boiler was rigged. Hayley and Mateo sold SOS when they decided to move to California when Hayley's talk show, "Wave", went into syndication.

Ryan and Hayley started to feel an attraction to each other, despite assuring themselves they were only friends. They took their friendship to a whole new level when sharing a steamy kiss on the Fourth of July in 1999. Gillian witnessed the kiss and was not pleased. Ryan and Hayley eventually broke up several months later and reunited with their true soulmates, Gillian and Mateo.

Kendall was arrested for burning down Erica's home and her lawyer, Trey Kenyon, persuaded her to get evidence from Aidan. Kendall came on to Aidan in order to try and get the evidence but Ryan spotted her and assumed the worst. He went to his room at The Pine Cone Motel, got on his motorcycle, and left town, leaving Kendall standing in the rain.
