Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In episode #41, Gilligan wins The South American Venezuelan sweepstakes. The Howells invite Gilligan into their exclusive millionaires club. Gilligan gets bored with The Howells and pays for the rest of the Castaways to join the club. Which castaway called Mr. and Mrs. Howell by their first names "Thurston and Lovey"?

Answer: The Professor

In no other episode, does anyone call The Howells "Thurston and Lovey"! This is a great trivia question to pull on your fellow Gilligan's Island buffs. Trivial tidbit: The winning ticket number is: G131131.
2. "Gilligan's Island" was filmed on quite an elaborate set, with many memorable-- and now collectible props. Which prop never exists on the set?

Answer: a bamboo umbrella

Mrs. Howell had several parasols, but never was there a bamboo umbrella. Mr. Howell indeed had a roulette wheel and a pool table. The Howells also had a set of golf clubs, made from bamboo poles and seashells. They used avocado pits for golf balls. The bamboo xylophone was made for the men's band---another story for another day. Most of the props on the island were inventions made by the Professor.
3. In episode #46, the Skipper accidentally knocks Gilligan in the face with a crate, turning Gilligan into a "human radio". What was Gilligan's radio reception most importantly used for?

Answer: weather updates

The Professor was listening to radio reports of a severe typhoon approaching the island. Just when the announcer was about to give the estimated time and coordinates that the storm would hit, the radio failed. Gilligan saved the day, as they were able to take cover after learning when and where the storm would indeed arrive. It's not often that Gilligan saves the day, as we all know.
4. Writers' Blunder: episode #71 pertains to the radioactive vegetable seeds, while later, in episode #87, The Professor rigs up a lie detector machine made from bamboo, the ship's horn, and the radio batteries, to help find Mrs. Howell's secret admirer. None of the men tested guilty. Assuming that the contraption didn't work, Gilligan decides to test the contraption himself. What did Gilligan say, to set off the detector's alarm (horn)?

Answer: I like spinach

In episode #71, Gilligan fishes a crate of radioactive vegetable seeds from the lagoon. The Castaways anxiously plant the seeds. To their amazement, the seeds take root and grow quite rapidly yet unshapely. Even so, the Castaways plant, pick, and ultimately prepare and consume their favorite veggies. Gilligan's favorite vegetable was spinach. Sixteen episodes later (#87), the Professor rigged up a lie detector machine to find Lovey's secret admirer.

When Gilligan hooked himself up to the machine, he stated two truths, before he finally said: I like spinach, setting the machine off ---a direct conflict from episode #71, where spinach was Gilligan's favorite vegetable. Perhaps nearing the end of the third season, the writers were also going a bit "island happy"!?
5. Arguably the BEST episode of all, is episode #72: "The Producer". What is the castaways' agenda, for putting on their own musical version of "Hamlet" in this hilarious episode?

Answer: to showcase Ginger's talents and force Hecuba to whisk her back to Hollywood

The lyrics of the songs that the Castaways sang in their version of the "Hamlet" play, were taken directly from William Shakespeare, verbatim. What a way to learn a little Shakespeare --priceless.
6. In episode #78, amidst a continual beat of native drums, Gilligan is struck on the skull once again and sees everything upside down. The Professor brews an antidote made of keptibora berry extract. Meanwhile, Headhunters invade the island and capture all the Castaways except Gilligan. How does Gilligan manage to free the crew from their capture?

Answer: He feeds the natives the keptibora berry juice making the natives feel out-numbered as they flee for their lives

The keptibora berry antidote makes Gilligan see everything in multiples. The final antidote for Gilligan's vision problems, turned out to be just plain water. Trivial tidbit: Looking at the natives' bamboo prison you'll notice a few walls missing.
7. The number of "Gilligan's Island" episodes filmed, only totals 93.

Answer: False

Actually there were 98 episodes filmed in total of "Gilligan's Island", as we know it. In the very first episodes, the original actors who just did not fit well together for the series, were ousted. Russell Johnson, Tina Louise, and Dawn Wells replaced them. Those original episodes were re-filmed using the original scripts, with the now legendary Castaways as we've come to know and love to this present day.
8. In episode #75, a famous butterfly collector comes to the island in search of capturing the rarest specimen, the pussycat swallowtail. What is Lord Beasley's last name?

Answer: Waterford

Lord Beasley's name was mentioned over the radio, as he and the Castaways listened to the news of his plight. Remember when the Skipper and Gilligan painted a large moth to resemble the elusive butterfly? The Professor thought that they could never fool the master collector. They almost pulled it off, until it rained and washed the paint from the moth.
9. In episode #45, a Soviet space capsule lands on the island and the two Russian cosmonauts attempt to leave the island without the Castaways. Paranoia spreads as the Russians think the Castaways are spies and the Castaways think the cosmonauts have ulterior motives. How did the cosmonauts leave the island?

Answer: submarine

The cosmonauts are best remembered to us as Ivan and Igor.
10. In episode #51, wealthy socialite Erika Tiffany Smith, an old acquaintance of the Howells', arrives on the island in search of two things. What two things is Erika in search of?

Answer: a spot to build a resort hotel and a husband

Erika falls for the Professor, who is too busy cataloging flora and fauna to understand how to encourage a romantic relationship. When Erika departs, she promises to send help for the Castaways, only there is a storm, and she can't relocate the tiny island....and so it goes.
