Behind The Scenes In New Rochelle Quiz

Growing up, I wanted to move to New Rochelle and spend my weekends hanging out at the Petrie house with Rob and Laura. Instead, I created this quiz. Please note that not all questions can be answered by watching the show itself.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Carl Reiner first wrote the script that would become "The Dick Van Dyke Show", he gave it a different name and cast himself in the lead role. What was the original name of the show?

Answer: Head Of The Family

The pilot for "Head of The Family", starring Carl Reiner, was not picked up by the networks. But when a producer friend of Reiner's made a personal plea to CBS, the network agreed to purchase it, provided that someone else was cast in the lead role. Johnny Carson was briefly considered for the role of "Rob Petrie", but, of course, the role ultimately went to Dick Van Dyke, who lent the show his name.
2. Mary Tyler Moore was the last cast member to be hired before "The Dick Van Dyke Show" began production. What was it about her that caused Dick to be concerned after she was hired?

Answer: Her age

Mary Tyler Moore was twenty-three when she was cast as Laura Petrie. Dick Van Dyke was in his late thirties. He was concerned that the audience would think that they looked out of place together. But of course his fears were proven to be unfounded when he and Ms. Moore became one of the hottest TV couples of the sixties.
3. An unexpected national event took place in the autumn months of 1963, upsetting the DVD cast and crew so much that they dispensed with the usual live audience at that week's taping because they couldn't imagine anyone wanting to laugh at a sitcom. What was this traumatic event?

Answer: the assassination of JFK

No one in the cast felt like trying to be funny that night, but the network schedule demanded that they proceed with the taping. According to cast member, Rose Marie (aka Sally Rogers), the absence of an audience at that night's taping didn't make it any easier for the actors to perform. In fact, she and several other members of the cast broke down in tears between scenes.
4. Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam were close friends before they were hired to play Rob's co-writers, Buddy Sorrell and Sally Rogers on the show. Was it Morey or Rose Marie who had once been known as "The Human Joke Machine"?

Answer: Morey Amsterdam

Both Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam had been successful performers in their own right long before the start of the show. Rose Marie began her career as "Baby Rose Marie", and Morey Amsterdam's talent for spouting off-the-cuff one-liners prompted his peers to nickname him the "Human Joke Machine."
5. Mary Tyler Moore was directly responsible for one very specific element of her alter ego, Laura Petrie's "look." What was it?

Answer: Capri pants

When first casting the DVD show, its producers assumed that Laura would be a housewife who wore demure skirts and heels a la Donna Reed. But in a subsequent interview, Mary Tyler Moore recalled telling the producers, "I AM a young mother. And we don't dress like that." She insisted that her character dress realistically, in sweaters, capri pants, and flats, just as she did at home.
6. Rose Marie almost didn't return for the fifth and final season of the show. What was the reason for her reluctance to continue in her role as Sally Rogers?

Answer: The death of her husband

Rose Marie was married to musician Bobby Guy, who died of cancer shortly before production began on the fifth season of the show. Overwhelmed with grief, she felt that she couldn't handle another season on the show. To convince her to come back, the show's producer went over to her house with a bottle of vodka and pleaded with her until she agreed to return one more time.
7. Ann Guilbert, who played shrill, excitable Millie Helper, was suggested for the role by Jerry Paris, who played easygoing dentist Jerry Helper on the show, and was her real-life husband's best friend.

Answer: True

Jerry Paris was already cast on the show when he told Guilbert's husband, "She'd be really great as Millie." To prove it, he arranged an audition for her, and the Helpers were born!
8. Of all the episodes featured in the show's five year run, there is one that stands out in Mary Tyler Moore's memory as her least favorite at the time. Which one is it?

Answer: the one where she got her toe stuck in a bathtub faucet

When first told the plot of the episode, Moore was thrilled that it would center on her as a "damsel in distress". However, when she found out that she would be off-screen for most of the show, she was furious and resentful. In subsequent interviews, Ms. Moore has said that some of her anger came from the fact that she was trying to quit smoking at the time, which didn't help her mood. Regardless of the reason for her initially negative attitude, after viewing the finished episode, Ms. Moore changed her mind and decided that it was good comedy.
9. Dick Van Dyke took some time out in 1964, the second year of the show, to make a movie. What movie was it?

Answer: Mary Poppins

As good as "Mary Poppins" was, Dick's attempt at a Cockney accent has to go down as one of the worst movie accents of all time. Maybe that's the reason that he didn't even bother with an English accent when he starred in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" a few years later.
10. The sexual chemistry between "Laura" and "Rob" was so believable to audiences and critics that they were compared to what other famous hot couple of the time?

Answer: John and Jackie Kennedy

Naturally, it being the days of "Camelot" and all that, the comparison had to be made!
