Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the episode, we see Manny in a dramatic scene involving sunglasses and sideways looks. What is Manny actually doing in this scene, though?

Answer: Buying three 99s (ice creams with flakes).

This scene, reminiscent of a Bond movie, sees Manny walking slowly through the hot, dry streets looking shiftily at the people he meets. Of course, after he has bought the ice creams, neither Fran nor Bernard want one. Bernard rejects his by saying "No, I'm not twelve..."
2. Throughout this episode, Manny keeps asking Bernard what the temperature is, but refuses to let either Bernard or Fran know why. When Bernard tells Manny that he doesn't "want to know why I (Bernard) want to know", Manny tells all. What is his excuse?

Answer: At 88 degrees Fahrenheit, his "Dave's Syndrome" kicks in.

Bernard, of course, doesn't believe him, because this isn't the first time Manny has suggested something ridiculous like this. One of his other supposed problems is that he has to eat lots of fudge. To stop him going deaf.
3. What is the name of the holiday novel that is being sold in Black Books throughout this episode?

Answer: "Tempocalypse"

"Tempocalypse" is the story of a 29-year-old temp, who can't get a boyfriend. While this appeals to the women in the episode, the men are more attracted by the fact that this temp also has only twelve hours to stop a potential nuclear war with China.
4. One hot and sticky night, Fran wakes up to find that the walls of her flat are moving in on her. Her side wall ends up being right next to her bed, and this ends up causing her a lot of lost sleep. Why was this happening?

Answer: A new flat is being created next door to her without her knowledge.

The landlord has moved Fran's wall so that he could create another flat next door, although both of the rooms where actually very tiny. Bernard, desperate for a summer girlfriend, went into the flat next door posing as a lawyer, only to fall in love with the redheaded inhabitant, Alyson.

Fran: "If I told you the walls of my flat were actually moving in, would you think that I was strange?"
Bernard: "No, I'd ask you to come round and look after my small children."
5. Bernard tells Manny that there are to be no "malingerers" in his shop, as Manny is in a blind panic about the increasing temperature. In an attempt to make him useful, Bernard tells Manny to get him his "lolly". What is Bernard's "lolly" made out of?

Answer: wine

The "lolly" is in fact a bottle of red wine that has been frozen with a large stick inserted into the bottleneck. To eat it, Bernard smashes the glass, leaving a wine-bottle shaped ice-lolly for Bernard to cool down with.
6. When Bernard finally finds himself a summer girlfriend in flat 2B, he soon becomes infatuated with her. Which of the following things does he not send to her as a token of his undying, desperate, "I-don't-want-to-be-alone-for-the-summer" love?

Answer: An accordion

A poem to Alyson, by Bernard Black:

"Think of a bee, you are its knees
You waft through me like a summer breeze
Can I come round Tuesday, please?"

Bernard does use an accordion later on in this episode to try and serenade Alyson, but she is in the middle of moving out of her flat at the time, and really isn't interested.
7. With the walls of her flat still moving, and her living space ever decreasing in size, Fran is tired and desperate to have her own space again. She decides to go and see the landlord. What does she offer him?

Answer: Herself

Fran says that her body is..."yours to enjoy. Like an eclair. Or a day at the zoo." She then talked about her bed was far too big for little old her, and made a lewd diagram to make her landlord move the wall back and bolt it down. Then, she tells him that he was imagining her offer, and that the walls weren't moving, and locks him out.
8. In an attempt to make Manny overheat, Bernard forces him to wear a thermal anorak, ug boots, and a filled hot water bottle. Realising that he's getting too hot, Manny tries to cool himself down, but what with?

Answer: The power of the mind

Manny reads a book on Arctic and Antarctic animals, and throws polystyrene shapes around in an attempt to fool himself about the temperature. The polystyrene (Styrofoam) shapes are supposed to represent the blizzard in which he is caught.
9. In this episode, Manny has been selling chilled books straight from a small fridge next to Bernard's desk, to help customers of the shop cool off in the uncomfortable heat. To make sure Manny overheats, Bernard has moved all of the books out of the small fridge and into the oven.

Answer: True

The books are sat in the oven, which is turned on high, in tin foil, so that they don't set on fire. Manny is directed to the kitchen by a post-it note in the back of the fridge saying 'go to the oven', and one on the oven door that reads "surprise!"
10. It finally all gets too hot for Manny, and as Fran and Bernard are walking towards the pub for a drink, Manny is suffering from the effects of the heat. What is he doing, unbeknownst to Bernard and Fran?

Answer: Jumping on the hood of a car holding a fire torch, wearing only a hot water bottle and the words "eat me" painted on his chest.

Manny's "Dave's Syndrome" finally kicks in, and even though Bernard refused to believe that the illness existed, the builders and road workers out on the street identify Manny's problems right away. Incidentally, the answer about the small taverna is a reference to both a different episode in this series of "Black Books", and the comic "Malfunction Junction", by Matt Milby.
