Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A show that was always my favorite had the name of a famous mouse in its title. What show am I talking about?

Answer: The Mickey Mouse Club

"The Mickey Mouse Club" (1955-1959) was a thirty minute show which usually aired in the early afternoon, just in time to watch when I got home from school. I will never forget:

"M-I-C-K-E-Y (why, because we like you!) ..M-O-U-S-E"
2. Starring three men, this show was a comedy where the men pretended to hit each other a lot. What was the name of this show?

Answer: The Three Stooges

"The Three Stooges" was a television show that ran in syndication while I was growing up. The show contained the film shorts that they had made much earlier. The show usually aired in the early afternoon. I loved watching Moe, Larry and Curly!
3. Before there was "Sesame Street" (1969-2010), there was the Captain. Can you think of his name? It was the name of an animal, too, which lives in Australia.

Answer: Captain Kangaroo

"Captain Kangaroo" (1955-1984) aired in the mornings so I got to watch it before I went to school. Bob Keeshan played the Captain who had both Mr. Green Jeans and Mr. Bunny Rabbit around to help us learn and to make us laugh.
4. Another of my favorite shows was "The Howdy Doody Show" (1947-1960). Howdy Doody was a type of puppet that was made to move with strings. What is the name of this type of puppet?

Answer: Marionette puppet

"The Howdy Doody Show" (1947-1960) featured the marionette puppet Howdy Doody who had 48 freckles on his face - one for each of the states in the United States at that time. Buffalo Bob (Smith) was Howdy's human companion. Other characters on the show included Clarabell the Clown and Princess Summerfall Winterspring.
5. Once there was a television show that featured a man in a mask. He had a partner named Tonto and a horse named Silver. Who was this masked man?

Answer: The Lone Ranger

"The Lone Ranger" (1948-1957) featured Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as his faithful companion, Tonto. At the end of each episode, the Lone Ranger would get on his horse and say, "Hi Ho Silver, away!"
6. In this show, one of the family members was always correct. Do you know its name?

Answer: Father Knows Best

"Father Knows Best" (1954-1963) was shown in the evenings. Robert Young starred as Jim Anderson, insurance agent and know-it-all dad. Jane Wyatt portrayed his patient wife, Margaret. They had two daughters and one son.
7. I liked cartoons, too. A special one for me featured a stone age family complete with rock houses and a dinosaur for a pet. What was the title?

Answer: The Flintstones

"The Flintstones" (1960-1966) was an animated show. Conceived to be a prehistoric representation of the popular "Honeymooners" (1955-1956) the show took place in the town of Bedrock. Residents included Fred and his wife Wilma and their best friends and neighbors, Betty and Barney Rubble.
8. I liked shows about animals, too. One such show had a dog that solved a major problem every week. The dog was a collie and her master was a boy named Timmy. What dog show am I talking about?

Answer: Lassie

"Lassie" aired from 1954-1978. At first, Lassie was owned by Jeff Miller and his mother. By the fourth season of the show, Timmy Martin was the owner of Lassie. In the show, Lassie was always called "girl" or referred to as "she". In fact, all the dogs that played Lassie were males.
9. There were a lot of situation comedies or sitcoms on television when I was growing up. These were shows about a family and the funny situations that happened to them. One such show starred a man named Danny. In real life, he was the father of a famous star, Marlo Thomas. What was the name of this show?

Answer: The Danny Thomas Show

"The Danny Thomas Show" aired from 1953-1957 on ABC and from 1957-1964 on CBS. Danny Thomas was Danny Williams, a successful entertainer who was also married and had children. My favorite moments of the show came in the form of Hans Conreid who guest starred as Danny's crazy Uncle Tonoose - very funny!
10. I liked western TV shows also. My favorite was about Ben Cartwright and his three sons, Adam, Hoss and Little Joe. The name of their show was ________.

Answer: Bonanza

"Bonanza" (1959-1973 - 14 seasons!) was advertised as the first all color TV western by NBC. Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) was the widowed father of three sons, Adam (Pernell Roberts), Hoss (Dan Blocker) and Little Joe (Michael Landon). Always wanting the boys to remain single, it was the "kiss of death" for any young actress to become engaged to one of the characters on the show!

I believe the show ran from 8:00PM until 9:00PM on Sunday evenings. I only remember so well because my bedtime was 8:30PM which meant I always missed half of the show. Thank goodness for TV reruns!
