Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, was loosely based on the real Enoch Johnson. Which versatile actor played the role of "Nucky"?

Answer: Steve Buscemi

The role of Nucky Thompson was a far different role than what some people know of Steve's previous screen appearances, particularly the psychotic and often funny roles he played in "Mr. Deeds" (2002) and "Con Air" (1997). The other choices were also in "Boardwalk Empire". Shea played Nucky's brother, Dabney was The Commodore, and Michael was Agent Van Alden.
2. The show's setting was the Atlantic City Boardwalk, beginning in January 1920. What major event was going on at that time that would shape the organized crime community throughout the United States, and throughout the series?

Answer: Prohibition

"Boardwalk Empire" first aired in the United States in mid-September 2010. The initial episode showed a celebratory countdown (New Year's Eve style) for the beginning of Prohibition. The celebration included mock funerals for "John Barleycorn".
3. Nucky Thompson took Jimmy Darmody (played by Michael Pitt) under his wing. However, Jimmy had some psychological scars from his service during which major conflict?

Answer: World War I

Jimmy dropped out of Princeton to enlist in the Army, leaving behind his pregnant girlfriend. While serving in Europe he sustained a leg injury due to shrapnel from a grenade. Even though the injury caused him to walk with a limp, his firearm skills were still very good, and would be put to the test.
4. Another of the main characters was Margaret Schroeder. She became a widow early in the series and eventually became Nucky's mistress. Like many inhabitants of 1920s New Jersey, she was an immigrant. Which country did she leave before settling in the US?

Answer: Ireland

Played by Kelly MacDonald, Margaret had a thick Irish accent. She also had two children with her abusive husband, Hans.
5. Arnold Rothstein (played by Michael Stuhlbarg) was one of the most powerful gangsters in the country at that time. Rothstein was reported to have been behind the fix of the 1919 World Series, which involved which American League team?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

In one episode, Rothstein went into a story about how he watched a man choke to death on a cue ball simply for his own amusement. The real life Rothstein was murdered in November 1928 after allegedly reneging on a gambling debt.
6. In traditional gangster fashion, things around the "Boardwalk" were kept in the family. Nucky's younger brother, Eli, held what important job in Atlantic City?

Answer: Sheriff

Played by Shea Wigham, Eli Thompson had a hard time constantly living in his older brother's shadow. He also had frequent outbursts that were considered by many close to him to be not quite politically correct. Toward the end of season one, it became clear that Eli was a political liability for Nucky.
7. Another interesting character was a man named Louis Kaestner. He used to control Atlantic City before he retired and turned it over to his protégé, Nucky. It was also revealed that Jimmy Darmody was his illegitimate son. By what nickname was Mr. Kaestner more commonly known as?

Answer: Commodore

Most people would associate the title Commodore with a naval flag officer, or sort of a junior admiral. However, the real-life Commodore (Louis Kuehnle) earned his title by being the chairman of the yacht club.
8. Which "Boardwalk Empire" character was sort of the unofficial leader of the Atlantic City black community and was part of Nucky's liquor bootlegging ring?

Answer: Chalky White

Chalky was a ruthless businessman but someone whom Nucky greatly respected. Chalky's role was very pivotal in keeping the peace between the whites and blacks, especially during the election year.
9. Probably the least-clothed person in season one was played by actress Paz de la Huerta. We saw her character's childish antics and emotional immaturity in her interactions with Nucky, Margaret, and Nelson Van Alden. What was Paz's character's name?

Answer: Lucy

Lucille "Lucy" Danziger was a former Ziegfeld Follies performer and was Nucky's mistress for most of the first season. She later had a one-night affair with the married Agent Van Alden and ended up getting pregnant.
10. Richard Harrow (played by Jack Huston) met the acquaintance of Jimmy in a veterans hospital. Harrow was a sharpshooter in the US Army but suffered a serious injury and disfigurement. Which choice best described his disfigurement?

Answer: missing most of the left side of his face

Richard went to live with Jimmy in the Chicago house of ill-repute, then later back to Atlantic City. He worked with Jimmy as a hit man and later became a bodyguard.
