Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which incarnation of the Doctor was the first to meet the Cybermen on-screen?

Answer: first

The first Doctor, played by William Hartnell, was the first to meet the Cybermen in the serial "The Tenth Planet", which also served as the final story for the first Doctor. In this story, the Cybermen tried to stop the energy drain on Mondas (the Cybermen's home planet). Mondas was low on energy, so the Cybermen there were absorbing energy from Earth. Once that was done, the Cybermen planned to use a bomb to destroy Earth before Mondas was destroyed.

However, with the Doctor's help, the bomb doesn't detonate and Mondas was destroyed. However, this was far from the last time the Cybermen and the Doctor would meet.
2. Did UNIT ever have to deal with the Cybermen in the classic series?

Answer: Yes

UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), under the command of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, first encountered the Cybermen in "The Invasion", which was also the story that introduced UNIT.
The Cybermen worked with a businessman named Tobias Vaughn in order to convert the humans into Cybermen. Vaughn assisted the Cybermen to make Earth a better place while the Cybermen did this to make more Cybermen. For helping the Cybermen, Vaughn expected to be spared, but once he learned that the Cybermen plan on converting Vaughn, he decided to help the Doctor and UNIT stop the Cybermen.
This was UNIT's only encounter with the Cybermen during the classic series.
3. There is a story from the classic series in which the Cybermen had names.

Answer: True

The Cybermen had names in their very first appearance, "The Tenth Planet". The main Cybermen was named Krail; there was another one named Krang. This was the only serial in the classic series to give them names. This was just one way in which the Cybermen from this story differ from the Cybermen in later stories.

Another was their voice, which in this story was a sing-song voice. Additionally, their hands were exposed to show that they were once humans.
4. In which story was the Cybermen's weakness to gold first mentioned?

Answer: Revenge of the Cybermen

"Revenge of the Cybermen" was when it was learned that the Cybermen had a weakness to gold. In this story, the Cybermen's plan was to destroy Voga, the planet of gold, so the people of Voga couldn't use the gold against the Cybermen. To exploit this weakness, a person had to press gold into the Cybermen's chest.

This would cause the Cybermen to slow down and eventually die of suffocation. In later serials, it became easier to use the gold to stop the Cybermen to the point where throwing a gold coin would instantly cause death (although there were stories in which this weakness was not mentioned and thus the Cybermen were defeated in other ways).
5. In "The Tomb of the Cybermen", which rank was first introduced?

Answer: Cyber-Controller

The Cyber-Controller was first introduced in "The Tomb of the Cybermen". It had authority over all other Cybermen including the Cyber-Leader. The Cyber-Controller spoke was a staccato voice. It was first found frozen along with the other Cybermen in the ice tombs of Telos.

In the Cyber-Controller's second appearance, "Attack of the Cybermen", it was killed when the Doctor (in his sixth incarnation) shot it with a gun.
6. In "Rise of the Cybermen", a new type of Cybermen from a parallel dimension were introduced. On what planet did these Cybermen originate?

Answer: Earth

When the Cybermen returned during the modern series of "Doctor Who", they were actually a different type of Cybermen that came from the planet Earth in a parallel dimension. They were made in a business called Cybus Industries under the leadership of John Lumic.

These Cybermen concerned themselves with upgrading the universe and its inhabitants. To cross from one universe to the other, major events had to have happened which would result in the walls of the universe being torn down. In later stories (such as the two-part episode "Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday" and the episode "The Next Doctor"), major events caused the walls of the universes to be temporarily torn down, allowing these Cybermen to invade the normal universe.
7. Several Cybermen were killed in various ways in "The Five Doctors". Which was not one of the ways in which this happened?

Answer: exterminated by the Daleks

"The Five Doctors", which was the show's twentieth anniversary special, contained a number of past enemies for the first five incarnations of the Doctor to fight--one of which was the Cybermen.
There were three different groups of Cybermen. One of them aligned with the Master (another of the Doctor's enemies). However, the Master tricked them and caused them to get electrocuted on a tiled floor in a tomb.
A second group of Cybermen planted a bomb outside the TARDIS. However, the TARDIS was able to dematerialize when the bomb was set off and the TARDIS (and two of the Doctor's companions) was safe. After this, these Cybermen were never seen again and the fate was unknown.
A third group of Cybermen was encountered by the third Doctor and his companion, Sarah Jane Smith. These Cybermen were destroyed when the Raston Warrior Robot attacked them. The robot could move at a quick speed and shoot anything that moves. The Cybermen did not know this and when they were searching for third Doctor and Sarah Jane, they crossed paths with the robot.
No Cyberman was exterminated by the Daleks, even though the Daleks did appear (albeit in a brief appearance). The Daleks didn't even encounter the Cybermen during this story.
8. Which incarnation of the Doctor never encountered the Cybermen during his time as the Doctor?

Answer: ninth

The ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, appeared in thirteen episodes, none of which had the Cybermen. However, the episode "Dalek" featured a brief appearance of the head of a Cybermen in a museum. The third Doctor didn't encounter the Cybermen during his time (although he did meet in "The Five Doctors").

The eighth Doctor, in his single appearance in the TV movie, also did not encounter the Cybermen.
9. "The Cybermen, along with Neo-Nazis and Lady Peinforte, wish to have control of a device that can cause great destruction that was launched into space but is set to return to Earth". Which episode was just described?

Answer: Silver Nemesis

The seventh Doctor met the Cybermen in the episode "Silver Nemesis", which was also the final serial of the classic series to feature the Cybermen. In that episode, a device called Nemesis was set to return to the Earth. The Cybermen, Neo-Nazis, and Lady Peinforte (who used time travel to arrive from 1638 to 1988) were all after this device.

The Doctor was able to blow it up to prevent the wrong people from getting their hands on it. The Cybermen were stopped by using gold coins and gold arrows.

The Neo-Nazis were destroyed by the Cybermen. Lady Peinforte was absorbed by the Nemesis device.
10. There were stories in which cyber-mats, small rat-like creatures that looked cute but were nonetheless dangerous, accompanied the Cybermen. Which was not one of the stories?

Answer: Earthshock

The Cybermats were first seen in "The Tomb of the Cybermen" where the Doctor met it in the ice tombs of the planet Telos. Their second appearance was in "The Wheel in Space"; the third was in "Revenge of the Cybermen" (in a redesigned form). The Cybermats wouldn't be seen again until approximately 35 years when they made a re-appearance in "Closing Time". Cybermats were dangerous creatures that could (and did) kill people.

However, unlike the Cybermen, they were easy for the Doctor to defeat.

Their physical appearance was similar to that of rats, and they scuttled around the floor. They would tear apart the rooms and equipments of the Cybermen's enemies.
