'Dr Who' - The Adversaries Trivia Questions

1. The Mara enters Tegan's mind when she falls asleep where?

From Quiz
I Am the Mara

Answer: Under wind chimes

The wind chimes are the first sign that the Doctor and his companions have not come to a primitive planet. While the Doctor and Adric wander off, Tegan falls asleep - the Kinda people find her and leave fruit and flowers around her. The Kinda built the chimes, but the Mara uses them to creep into unwary minds...

2. Which incarnation of the Doctor was the first to meet the Cybermen on-screen?

From Quiz Commitment to Excellence

Answer: first

The first Doctor, played by William Hartnell, was the first to meet the Cybermen in the serial "The Tenth Planet", which also served as the final story for the first Doctor. In this story, the Cybermen tried to stop the energy drain on Mondas (the Cybermen's home planet). Mondas was low on energy, so the Cybermen there were absorbing energy from Earth. Once that was done, the Cybermen planned to use a bomb to destroy Earth before Mondas was destroyed. However, with the Doctor's help, the bomb doesn't detonate and Mondas was destroyed. However, this was far from the last time the Cybermen and the Doctor would meet.

From Quiz I Am the Mara

Answer: The Dark Places of the Inside

22. In which story was the Cybermen's weakness to gold first mentioned?

From Quiz Commitment to Excellence

Answer: Revenge of the Cybermen

"Revenge of the Cybermen" was when it was learned that the Cybermen had a weakness to gold. In this story, the Cybermen's plan was to destroy Voga, the planet of gold, so the people of Voga couldn't use the gold against the Cybermen. To exploit this weakness, a person had to press gold into the Cybermen's chest. This would cause the Cybermen to slow down and eventually die of suffocation. In later serials, it became easier to use the gold to stop the Cybermen to the point where throwing a gold coin would instantly cause death (although there were stories in which this weakness was not mentioned and thus the Cybermen were defeated in other ways).

23. In "The Armageddon Factor", why did the Doctor suspect the White Guardian was not who he claimed to be?

From Quiz The Black Guardian

Answer: His lack of concern over Princess Astra

Near the end of "The Armageddon Factor", the White Guardian appeared on the screen, congratulated the Doctor, and asked for the Key to Time. Princess Astra was one of the six segments to the key; however, the White Guardian wasn't concerned about this fact. This tipped the Doctor off that the White Guardian wasn't who he said he was. It was the Black Guardian who was disguising himself as the White Guardian, so he would be able to own the Key to Time.

24. Which fish-like creatures occupy the planet of Messaline?

From Quiz When Plants Attack!

Answer: In a slide of Winlett's blood

27. 'Tomb of the Cybermen' (1967) features the first appearence of what metal 'pets' controlled by the Cybermen?

From Quiz 'Doctor Who' Baddies

Answer: Scaroth

Marvelously played by Julian Glover.

30. The Doctor defeats the Mara by trapping it inside a circle of what?

From Quiz I Am the Mara

Answer: Mirrors

Evil can't stand to look at itself. Seeing its reflections reflected on itself, the Mara leaves Aris and manifests as a giant snake before exploding into pinkish light. Tegan looks at the snake through the gaps in the mirrors - perhaps this is why the Mara lingers in her head. "Kinda" is one of the "Doctor Who" serials that, on some DVD releases, contains re-done CGI for some effects shots. The Mara snake was done with puppetry originally; on DVD, the viewer has the option to watch either the original broadcast version or the CGI effects.
