Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The comedy show 'Open All Hours' is about Arkwright, a miserly shop keeper and his hapless errand boy nephew, Granville, played by David Jason. What nationality does Arkwright say that Granville's father was?

Answer: Hungarian

Granville's mother was Arkwright's sister and he says that Granville's father was Hungarian, and that this accounts for Granville's passionate and romantic nature. Poor Granville works long hours in the shop for very little pay, and really has no opportunity to display any romantic or passionate tendencies.
2. In 'Open All Hours,' what is the name of Arkwright's fiancée who lives over the road?

Answer: Gladys Emmanuel

Nurse Gladys Emmanuel was played by the wonderful Lynda Baron. Arkwright, played by Ronnie Barker, is always trying to have his 'evil way' with Gladys but she will have none of it. She is always trying to get Arkwright to spend a little and be kinder to Granville, but with no success. She is under no illusions about what a mean old man he is.
3. In 'Only Fools and Horses,' David Jason plays the role of Del Boy Trotter and Nicholas Lyndhurst plays his younger brother Rodney Trotter. Which actor played the part of Grandad?

Answer: Lennard Pearce

The brothers were market traders and Lennard Pearce played their old Grandad who lived with them and did the cooking, horrible as it was. When they were casting the show, the initial idea of the writer had been for David to play Grandad, as he had played several old men before.

However, David was keen to play Del, and after hearing him read it was agreed that he would play that part. There was much banter between the generations and since Rodney was much younger than Del it was as if there were three generations. Sadly Lennard Pearce died just as they were beginning to shoot the third series.

His successor was Uncle Albert, played by Buster Merrifield, who closely resembled Captain Birdseye and bored Rodney and Del stiff with his tall wartime stories.
4. Where did Rodney first meet Cassandra, whom he eventually married?

Answer: At evening classes

Rodney met Cassandra when he took her coat by mistake after evening classes. She gave him a lift home and he asked her to drop him in an upmarket street because he was embarrassed that he lived in a shabby block of flats in Peckham. The building where he and Del lived was called Nelson Mandela House.
5. 'A Bit of a Do' is about a series of celebration parties which all take place at the same hotel, with mostly the same people present. What is the first of these occasions?

Answer: The wedding of Paul and Jenny

Jenny's father is a dentist and the family is very middle class but Paul's family is of a lower social order. Ted Simcock, Paul's father, who is played by David Jason is a rather vulgar man, and his wife Rita, played by Gwen Taylor, is in a permanent state of embarrassment.
6. David won a BAFTA for Best Actor for his work on a serial called 'Porterhouse Blue'. Who wrote the book on which the programme was based?

Answer: Tom Sharpe

The story was set in a Cambridge College and David Jason played Scullion, who was chief porter, a man who had great respect for authority and was quite servile. The character could not have been more different from Del Boy Trotter. However, beneath all this Scullion was plotting his own advancement.

The book was by Tom Sharpe and Malcolm Bradbury converted it to a four part drama for television.
7. David played a character called Pa Larkin in the popular television series 'The Darling Buds of May'. What was Pa's favourite expression when he was really happy about things?

Answer: Perfick

The Larkins were a happy go lucky farming family in rural Kent. They lived by their own rules and did not pay tax. When the tax inspector came to call he fell in love with their eldest daughter Mariette, married her and stayed with the Larkins for ever. They are kind and generous and important members of the village where they live.
8. In the 'Darling Buds of May,' who plays Ma and Pa's eldest daughter Mariette?

Answer: Catherine Zeta Jones

This is often considered to be Catherine Zeta Jones' big break, and the series made her a household name. Later she moved to the United States as she was keen to be in movies. She has indeed appeared in many different movies my favourite being 'Chicago' in which we also see her singing and dancing talents.
9. David Jason showed his versatility when he played Detective Inspector Jack Frost in the series 'A Touch of Frost'. What annoying habit did Jack have regarding cups of tea?

Answer: He often drank other people's cups of tea.

David Jason was actually asked what sort of programme he would like to do next, and he couldn't believe his luck because actors never get asked that question. He replied that he was a big fan of detective shows on television, and he was given a book written by R.D. Wingfield about Inspector Frost. David loved it and so 'A Touch of Frost' it was recorded.

It showed that he was not just a comic actor, but a very good dramatic actor too. The show ran for eighteen years, and only finished when David Jason, aged 68, felt that it was impossible to pretend that he was still young enough to be a serving police officer.
10. One of David's close friends is Ronnie Barker with whom he appeared in 'Open All Hours'. He joined Ronnie for three episodes of another favourite television show, 'Porridge'. Which character did he play?

Answer: Blanco

Although David was only 30 years old at the time, he played a very old man. Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais wrote this sitcom which was about life in a fictional British prison called Slade. Blanco was jailed for killing his wife, although he always maintained his innocence.

As he was being released the main character, Fletch, warned him not to go and try to exact revenge on the real killer. To which Blanco replied with the immortal line "No, I know 'im what did it. It were the wife's lover.

But don't worry. I shan't go round searching for him. 'E died years ago that I do know. It were me that killed him."
