Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays the Doctor in this story arc?

Answer: Jon Pertwee

Pertwee played the Doctor from 1970 to 1974. His portrayal was characterized by an increased use of gadgets (including a hot rod "Whomobile" with inertial dampers for brakes and the sonic screwdriver) and his practice of martial arts, particularly "Venusian Akido".
2. Which of these companions assists the Doctor in this story?

Answer: Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning

The Pertwee Doctor was characterized by his affiliation with UNIT, an elite United Nations force. Therefore, most of his companions were also UNIT operatives. When Tom Baker took over the role, the former Pertwee companion Sarah Jane Smith was more free to gallivant with the Doctor across time and space, taking on a decidedly less paramilitary persona. Leela and Romana were companions to the Tom Baker Doctor; they are best discuseed in their own quizzes.
3. This story features guerrillas from the future who attempt to assassinate a British official, Sir Reginald Styles. What position does Styles hold?

Answer: Chief Representative to the United Nations

Styles is a key figure in resolving an international crisis that threatens to erupt into another World War. It is very indicative of the times (the episode was produced in 1972) that there is no specific conflict cited. In the wake of the colonial wars, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the China-USSR conflict, and the advent of the PLO, the writers were content to refer only to "the International Situation".
4. The Doctor and his companion stake out the country house where Styles has been staying. The Doctor takes advantage of the facilities, sampling the fine wine. How does the Doctor describe the vintage?

Answer: "A touch sardonic, perhaps, but not cynical."

Like fellow British icon James Bond, the Doctor was often known to sup with his enemies like a civilized combatant. He later has wine with the Controller. Jo ends up using the decanter to knock out an Ogron, prompting the Doctor to mourn the loss of such a good vintage.
5. The guerrillas initially mistake the Doctor for Styles. How does the Doctor convince the guerrillas that they have the wrong man?

Answer: He shows them an article in the newspaper reporting that Styles has flown to Peking

References to newspapers as temporal indicators abound in this series. In "The Five Doctors", for example, the Second Doctor finds out about Lethbridge Stewart's retirement in the Times - "tomorrow's Times". DNA, of course, was not in common parlance in 1972.
6. As it turns out, Earth has been conquered by the Daleks (a robot race and longtime foe of the Doctor) in the 22nd century following a prolonged series of world wars. How do the 22nd-century Daleks end up capturing the Doctor's companion?

Answer: She grabs a time device from the guerrillas and the Daleks divert her into their clutches

The Daleks had identified that unit as a rebel device and were prepared to intercept anyone using it. Jo, distrustful of the guerrillas, grabbed the time device and threatened to smash it unless she and the Doctor were released. The time scoop, by the way, is a device from "The Five Doctors".
7. What is the name of the human "Quisling" who serves as the Daleks' "Controller" in the 22nd century?

Answer: He is not named -- he is just called "Controller"

Marks, Letts, and Bernard were the writer, producer, and director, respectively, of this story. The Controller is played by Aubrey Woods.
8. According to the Controller, what proportion of the world's population perished in the wars proceeding from the twentieth-century crisis?

Answer: 7/8

Reginald Styles' Peace Conference in the English countryside was supposed to stave off this cataclysm. Instead, the mansion exploded, killing several world leaders and sparking the great conflict.
9. The guerrillas rescue the Doctor and want to kill the Controller. Why do they spare him?

Answer: The Doctor convinces them that if the Controller had not served the Daleks, someone else would have

The Controller returns the favor later, releasing the Doctor and being executed by the Daleks for his trouble.
10. What plot twist provides the ironic climax to this story?

Answer: The guerrillas' actions actually caused the world crisis that enabled the Dalek invasion

The guerrillas blamed Styles for the disaster, interpreting the explosion as a power grab. In fact, one of the guerrillas (Shura) planted the explosives in an attempt to kill Styles. The Doctor manages to clear the house in time, and the Daleks are killed in the explosion instead. The guerrillas did indeed want the Doctor to kill Styles, but he refused, as he was confident that Styles was not the perpetrator of this act.
