Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the official color of mourning on the planet Necros?

Answer: Blue

Women's legs are also to be covered at all times (with blue) while in mourning.

The Doctor's cloak and Peri's outfit and beret were originally going to be white, until an unexpected snowfall on location shooting made a brighter color show up better on camera.
2. The Doctor was visiting the planet Necros to inquire after the death of a friend, Professor Arthur Stengos. What was Stengos' scientific specialty?

Answer: Agronomy

Stengos' last name was a play on a Greek word for 'death'. Stengos (Alec Linstead), was later found to be a test subject who was being turned into a Dalek. He was mercifully killed by his daughter Natasha (Bridget Lynch-Blose), who had come with her friend Grigory (Stephen Flynn) to see why the authorities would not release his body to his family.
3. What was the name of the internment facility on Necros?

Answer: Tranquil Repose

"Perpetual internment" was actually a form of suspended animation, where most of the clients had paid to keep themselves only barely alive until a cure for their diseases could be found. Unfortunately, no one ever comes back from Tranquil Repose, as many of the people were personalities of power and status and would be competing with people who had filled their jobs and positions after their illness.

Davros, however, had two better uses for them. The top individuals became Daleks, and the rest became the high protein concentrate that the company Kara (Eleanor Bron) ran for him had use to virtually stop famine in the galaxy. Naturally, no one knew this, because it would, as Davros said, create 'consumer resistance'.
4. What is the common name for Herbaculum Vitae (also known as Staff of Life)?

Answer: Weed plant

On his way to Tranquil Repose, the Doctor noticed that weed plant grew wild and uncultivated. After Davros was defeated, he suggested to Takis (Trevor Cooper) that he and Lilt (Colin Spaull) use the plant to feed the soon-to-be-hungry galaxy.
5. What was the real name of the hidden leader of Tranquil Repose, known to most as The Great Healer?

Answer: Davros

Davros had managed to survive the explosion in "Resurrection of the Daleks" by using an escape pod and hitched a transport to Necros, where he used the unknowing residents of the catacombs to establish a power base through food and to start rebuilding an army of Daleks that would serve only him.
6. Who portrayed the DJ, who kept the hibernating residents of the facility up to date on current events and played music for them?

Answer: Alexei Sayle

Alexei Sayle is probably best known to US audiences for his work on "The Young Ones".

Strangely, two months before being cast in this episode, Sayle wrote an article for Foundation Magazine titled "Why I Should Be the Next Doctor Who: The Case for a Marxist in the TARDIS".
7. What high-priority funerary ceremony was to be held in the midst of the intrigue on Necros?

Answer: The internment of President Vargo's Wife

President Vargo was never seen in this episode, and only the sarcophagus-like figure of his wife was shown. Kara had wanted Vargos (and Davros) dead, in order to destroy the federation of ten planets and then she could control the food supply of the galaxy. This is why she hired Orcini under the pretense of 'just' killing Davros, since the device she gave the assassin would have destroyed nearly the entire facility.

While never mentioned in the broadcast script, Vargos' wife was name Sontana, and the Doctor had known her.
8. What song did the DJ play in the dedication to Casket 816 ('George') from his wife Annetta?

Answer: "Blue Suede Shoes"

'George' had suffered from Beck's Syndrome and his wife had administrated a research fund to find a cure. She had, and now the DJ mused as to what she might still be doing with the money.

The version of "Blue Suede Shoes" played was from the album "Smash Hits - Presley Style" and is by an unknown artist.
9. What was the name of the assassin that Kara hired to kill the Great Healer?

Answer: Orcini

Orcini (William Gaunt) was a (temporarily excommunicated) Knight of the Grand Order of Oberon. Bostock was his loyal (and very odiferous) squire. Orcini was an assassin of principles, looking only for the 'honorable kill', giving all his fees to charity. His left leg is artificial and has a faulty hydraulic valve (which he never fixes, to remind him of his mortality).
10. What rather strange thing did the Doctor and Peri find in the Garden of Fond Memories?

Answer: The Doctor's tombstone

Finding his grave marker in the Garden had a profound effect on the Doctor, upsetting him as things rarely do. When it fell over and appeared to kill him, it had an upsetting effect on Peri (Nicola Bryant) as well, since she had to talk with the very lecherous Jobel (Clive Swift). Thankfully for her, the Doctor was uninjured and they were able to continue their adventure.

Clive Swift is probably best known to US audiences as Richard Bucket, long-suffering husband of Hyacinth in "Keeping Up Appearances".
