Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hotten Courier", September 2003 "Man paralysed in plane-crash plunge dies suddenly 11 years on"

Answer: Chris Tait

Chris Tate was the son of Frank Tait and together they ran a haulage business from Home Farm

Chris was a great womaniser - well, like father, like son, I suppose.

He first turned his attention to Kathy Merrick, and although the course of their love did not run smoothly, they married.

Kathy embarked on an affair. Then, in 1993, when a jet airliner crashed down on the village, killing several, Chris was trapped in the wreckage of the wine bar. He suffered spinal injuries that meant he could never walk again.

Realising that Kathy had stayed with him only for his money, Chris began an affair with Rachel Hughes. She became pregnant and they married, but it lasted less than a year.

More drama followed for Chris. He was kidnapped, twice, and had rows with various womenfolk in his family.

A stormy marriage to the former prostitute Charity Dingle followed, despite the opposition of Chris's sister, Zoe, who had once had an affair with Charity.

Later he threw Charity out after finding she had been having an affair with Cain Dingle, and indeed previously a baby by him

After that he had a brain tumour and with only months to live, he began frittering away all his money to ensure Charity would be left with nothing. He arranged a meeting with Charity where he poisoned himself in order to frame her for his murder.

He died on the floor of Home Farm in the same spot where his father had died six years previously.

Chris Tate was played by Peter Amory between November 1989 and September 2003.
2. "Hotten Courier", October 2005 "Obituary: Former Emmerdale gamekeeper dies on flight home from Australia"

Answer: Seth Armstrong

That really should have been "poacher turned gamekeeper" - literally.

Seth grew up in the village and had various jobs as a school boiler man and then gamekeeper at Home Farm.

His wife of many years died, and Seth then took up with a former old-flame, Betty Egleton.

The two characters provided a lot of comic relief for the village and were devoted to each other, despite contrary appearances.

In September 2003, Seth went on an extended holiday to Australia, leaving Betty at home. There he took ill and died from a heart attack on the plane flying back to Britain.

He was buried, illegally, in the woods where he had once poached.

Seth Armstrong was played by Stan Richards between May 1978 and December 2004. Stan died of emphysema in February 2005.
3. "Hotten Courier". June 2011 "Man left quadriplegic in train crash loses battle for life"

Answer: Jackson Walshe

What the 'Hotten Courier' did not know was that Jackson Walshe died after an assisted suicide.

This was, again, a powerful subject for a soap opera, reflecting a debate that was taking place in real life.

Left quadriplegic after the van he was in crashed onto a railway line and was struck by a train, Jackson wanted to end his life. His boyfriend, Aaron Livesy, was opposed.

Jackson did not have the ability to end his life without help. After much soul-searching, Aaron, and Jackson's mother, Hazel, gave Jackson a drink containing life-ending medication.

Marc Silcock played Jackson Walshe between March 2010 and June 2011.
4. "Hotten Courier", August 1986 "Mother of four dies in car crash horror"

Answer: Pat Sugden

Pat Harker was the girlfriend of farmer Jack Sugden and became pregnant by him shortly before he left the village. She married Tom Merrick, pretending her son, Jackie, was also his.

The Merricks left the village, but Pat returned with her two children. She eventually married Jack, and they had a son, Robert. (Am I allowed to say Robert turned into one of the most twisted and manipulative characters in the village's history?)

Four months after Robert was born, Pat died when the car she was driving plunged off the road as she swerved to avoid a flock of sheep.

Pat Sugden was played by Lynn Dalby 1972, 1974) and Helen Weir (1980-1986).
5. "Hotten Courier, April 2006 "Man found in shallow grave had been shot - police"

Answer: Mark Wylde

Mark Wylde, or Daniel Lamb, as it said on his birth certificate, was a businessman who married Faye Lamb in 1979. Due to money worries, he walked out on her and moved to Spain, where he changed his name.

Seven years later, he was legally declared dead.

In the meantime, he married Natasha and they had three children.

After selling his business and earning a fortune, the family moved to Emmerdale. Shortly afterwards, his first wife saw a photograph of Mark in a magazine, and followed him to Yorkshire.

She confronted him and he apologised for walking out. Faye later told Natasha everything.

Mark and Faye planned to get back together. Natasha ordered him to leave and he departed to the woods with a shotgun. He planned to kill himself, but Natasha followed him and took the shotgun, before shooting him. She buried his body in the woods.

After more soap opera twists and turns, Natasha confessed to the murder and was jailed.

Maxwell Caulfield played Mark Wylde between January 2009 and January 2010.
6. "Hotten Courier", June 1995 "Former Dales farmer dies in Spanish car crash"

Answer: Joe Sugden

Joe Sugden was the younger son of the family around whom "Emmerdale Farm" was based.

Joe had a busy love life, and a couple of broken marriages.

After the death of his step-son Mark, Joe began to suffer from depression and also slipped into alcoholism.

He moved to Spain to live with his mother, Annie. In June 1995, news reached Emmerdale that he had died in a car crash in Spain.

Frazer Hines played Joe Sugden over several broken spells between October 1972 and August 1994.
7. "Hotten Courier", February 2015 "Equestrienne dies in fall at abandoned farm"

Answer: Katie Sugden

In July 2001, Katie Addyman met Andy Sugden when both were in detention at school. Romance followed, despite the efforts of Andy's brother by adoption, Robert, to split them up.

And despite an affair she had with Robert, Katie married Andy. Though, through Andy's neglect, it was not long before Katie and Robert resumed their affair. In April 2007, Andy and Katie divorced.

Katie began a successful business as a stables manager and had several more romantic engagements.

It was deja vu all over again on Christmas Day 2014 when Katie and Andy married for a second time. Was Robert happy? Don't be silly, this is a soap after all and he tried to sabotage the nuptials.

Worse followed when Katie caught Robert kissing Aaron Livesy and took a photograph on her phone. In dramatic scenes, Robert tried to snatch the phone at the derelict Butler's Farm. He pushed her to the floor, which gave way under her weight and she plunged into a cellar

Katie Sugden was played by Sammy Winward between July 2001 and February 2015.
8. "Hotten Courier", January 1997 "Hero farm worker dies weeks after saving child from blaze"

Answer: Dave Glover

Dave Glove was 21 when he arrived in the Dales with his family and landed a job as a farmhand on Home Farm estates.

He began an affair with Kim Tait, wife of the boss, Frank Tait, who quickly knew of it and sacked him.

However, Kim became pregnant to Dave and they moved in together. Frank offered Kim £1m to leave Dave and move back in with him. She returned to Frank, telling Dave that he was not the father of her child.

Fast forward several months and Dave has married in secret and Kim has given birth to a son, James.

Before leaving the village for the last time, Dave went to Home Farm to see Kim, and they were confronted by Frank.

They then noticed a fire has broken out in the nursery, where James was sleeping Dave dashed into the nursery and got James out through a window, but was himself trapped and injured. He died in hospital a few weeks later.

Dave Glover was played by Ian Kelsey between August 1994 and January 1997.
9. "Hotten Courier", September 2016 "Village stunned by sudden death of talented young art student"

Answer: Holly Barton

What the "Hotten Courier" did not know was that Holly Barton had a history of drugs abuse. She died of a heroin overdose, whether a deliberate of an accidental one was left unclear.

Holly had been an addict for some time and her parents, John and Moria, went to extreme lengths to try to get her clean.

She appeared to be over her addiction and in a relationship with another recovering addict, Jai Sharma.

Holly Barton was played by Sophie Powles between July 20019 and September 2016.
10. "Hotten Courier", December 1998 "Owner dies after armed raid on village shop"

Answer: Vic Windsor

Vic and Viv Windsor moved with their family to Emmerdale in August 1993 to run the village shop.

On Christmas Day, 1998, Vic and Viv were having dinner at the local pub, which ran out of puddings. Vic went to the shop to get supplies and encountered Billy Hopwood intent on stealing from the post office safe. Billy had a shotgun and he and Vic struggled. Vic was pushed back against some shelves, and died.

Vic Windsor was played by Alun Lewis between August 1993 and Dec ember 1998.
