Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Weatherfield Gazette", July 2016: "Mum-of-two stabbed to death in street fracas"

Answer: Kylie Platt

Kylie was the wife of Coronation Street hairdresser David Platt. Kylie had a troubled past, but settled down and lived with David, their daughter, David's mum, Gail, and Kylie's son by bad-boy drug dealer Callum Logan. She died just hours after David and Kylie announced they were moving to Barbados to get away from the house where Kylie had killed Callum Logan and where she and David had buried his body.
She was fatally stabbed in a scuffle with a youth from her past after he had tried to rob the local kebab shop.
Kylie Platt was played by Paula Lane between 2010 and 2016.
2. "Weatherfield Gazette", September 1967: "Man dies after van falls on him"

Answer: Harry Hewitt

Harry Hewitt was a bus driver who lived with his wife on Coronation Street. After her death in a car crash, he re-married.
He and his new wife moved to her native Ireland. On a return to Weatherfield for a wedding, he was working underneath a van when the hydraulic jack slipped and he was crushed.
Harry Hewitt was played by Ivan Beavis on and off between 1960 and 1967.
3. "Weatherfield Gazette", January 1971: "Home electrics tragedy claims life of mum of twins"

Answer: Valerie Barlow

Valerie Barlow was the first wife of Ken Barlow and mother to their twin son and daughter. She was a trained hairdresser and returned to that occupation as the twins grew older.
After nine years of marriage, Valerie and Ken decided to emigrate to Jamaica. On the night before their departure, she was electrocuted in her home while using a hairdryer through a faulty electrical outlet.
Valerie Barlow was played by Anne Reid on a permanent basis between 1962 and 1971.
4. "Weatherfield Gazette", September 2015: "Man's body found under garage conversion: Police start murder inquiry"

Answer: Callum Logan

Callum Logan was a drug dealer who lived in some of the seedier parts of town. He was also the biological father of Max, a son by Kylie Platt. She ran with the wild boys and used drugs herself.
However, she turned her life around and settled down with hairdresser David Plat, with whom she had a daughter.
Logan, though, wanted to be part of Max's life and fought for visiting rights through the legal process.
As his demands and his violence towards various people on the street continued, there was a showdown with Kylie in her home. She bludgeoned him to death while he was attacking David's sister, Sarah.
The Platts then embarked on a cover-up. They were thwarted in an attempt to get the body from the house, and ended up burying it under a manhole in the floor of their garage.
Subsequently the garage was converted by local father and son building company into a granny annex, with the manhole concreted over. The body was uncovered after a runaway ice-cream van crashed into the house.
Failure of logic moment: Why any builder would concrete over a manhole without at least checking what was underneath first is something that only a soap opera writer could explain.
Callum Logan was played by Sean Ward in 114 episodes in 2014 and 2015.
5. "Weatherfield Gazette", March 2012: "Cleared rape accused dies after fall on factory stairway"

Answer: Frank Foster

Frank Foster was another in "Coronation Street's" long list of bad guys.
He was a businessman who dealt with the street's lingerie company, 'Underworld', and became co-owner. He became infatuated with the owner, Carla Connor, but when she rejected his advances, he raped her.
Eventually arrested for rape, he was later cleared. He had an angry confrontation at the factory with Carla, which was overheard by his mother, Anne.
In a rage, she grabbed a whiskey bottle and hit her son with it. He fell downstairs and died. Anne was later arrested for murder.
Frank Foster was played by Andrew Lancel in 2011 and 2012.
6. "Weatherfield Gazette", December 2010: "Shop assistant killed in tram tragedy was mother of toddler"

Answer: Molly Dobbs

Molly Compton arrived in Coronation Street in 2005 and married garage mechanic Tyrone Dobbs four years later.
However, she began an affair with Tyrone's business partner, Kevin Webster, and became pregnant by him.
She gave birth to a son, Jack, and stayed with Tyrone for a time, letting him believe Jack was his. She decided to leave Tyrone for Kevin and on the night she did so was in the local corner shop when a tram derailed from a viaduct and crashed into the street.
Molly was seriously injured but before her death confessed the relationship and Jack's real father to Kevin's ex-wife, Sally (I hope you are keeping up here.)
Molly was played by Vicky Binns between 2005 and 2010.

In fact, 2010 was a particularly deadly year in Coronation Street with nine deaths, three as a result of the tram derailment.
7. "Weatherfield Gazette", January 2014: Obituary: "Gifted seamstress loses cancer battle for life"

Answer: Hayley Cropper

In reality, what the "Weatherfield Gazette" could not have known was that Hayley Cropper had taken her own life as her pancreatic cancer was terminal.
Hayley Cropper had been born a man (Harold) but always struggled with her gender and underwent treatment abroad to become a woman.
She began to work as a seamstress in the local lingerie factory.
She met and married Roy Cropper, who ran the local cafe. It was a perfect match. Roy had been a somewhat odd character when he first appeared on the street, but he was genuine, kind, and honest to a fault.
They had a harmonious marriage until Hayley was diagnosed with incurable cancer. The storyline that followed was one of the most powerful and controversial that "Coronation Street" had even shown.
Hayley wanted to end her life while she still had some control over it. Roy was opposed on moral grounds.
Their debates mirrored wide public discussions about whether it is right for a person to end their own life.
In the end, Roy accepted his wife's wishes, and was with her when she died.
Hayley Cropper was played by Julie Hesmondhalgh between 1998 and 2014.
8. "Weatherfield Gazette", November 2010: Obituary: "Pigeon-loving ex-publican dies at Coronation Street home"

Answer: Jack Duckworth

OK, not a dramatic departure but a sympathetic one for a character who was much-loved by the viewers.
Jack had been pre-deceased by his wife, Vera. They had been a fixture in Coronation Street for many years and even owned and ran the local pub, the Rover's Return, for a time. Vera was the dominant one, some may even say domineering, but Jack loved her and usually managed to work his way around her, particularly when it came to his beloved pigeons.
Vera died in her sleep in 2008 and Jack stayed on in their Coronation Street home. He died peacefully two years after her of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Jack Duckworth was played by William Tarmey in more than 2,000 episodes from 1979.
9. "Weatherfield Gazette", April 1997: "Heart attack claims life of road-rage driver"

Answer: Derek Wilton

Derek Wilton was a character that principally brought a lot of light relief to "Coronation Street". He met Mavis Riley in 1976 and they married in 1988, although he had married and divorced in between times.
Derek and Mavis were an often scatterbrained - and let's face it, simple - couple; one that was regarded as having a safe long-term presence in a soap opera.
The directors and writers thought otherwise and in 1997 Derek became involved in a road-rage incident and died of a heart attack.
Derek Wilton was played by Peter Baldwin, initially as an irregular character from 1976 and then as a permanent fixture from 1987 to 1997.
10. "Weatherfield Gazette", December 1989: "Weatherfield man dies in Blackpool tram tragedy"

Answer: Alan Bradley

Arguably the most famous violent death on "Coronation Street", the demise of Alan Bradley was still talked about by the show's fans decades later.
Bradley was a character beloved of soap operas: a smooth-talking bad boy. He had a long-term relationship with Rita Fairclough, one of the show's most important characters. They met while she was foster mother to his daughter, his ex-wife having been killed in a car crash
Rita helped him with money for his business, but he was a fraudster and lost it. He spent time in jail for trying to suffocate her.
On his release, he began a campaign of harassment against her and that reached its denouement in 1989 when he followed her to Blackpool and confronted her. As she ran away, he chased her - and ran straight into the path of a tram. He was killed instantly.
Bradley was played by Mark Eden from 1986 to 1989.
