Ernest Bishop was a one-time photographer who married Emily Nugent in 1972 and they moved into Coronation Street.
When his photography business failed, he got a job at a denim factory on the street.
While making up the wages one day in January 1978, two men confronted him and demanded the money. The shotgun they had with them went off, possibly accidentally, and he was fatally injured.
His widow, Emily, stayed in the street for some 40 years afterwards. She was known as a regular churchgoer who carried out work for charity.
Ernest Bishop was payed by Stephen Hancock between 1972 and 1978.

Answer: Brian Tilsley

Brian Tilsley moved into Coronation Street in 1979 with his parents. He subsequently married his girlfriend, Gail Potter. They had two children.
The marriage soon became rocky and Brian had several affairs, while Gail had an affair with Ian Latimer, a cousin of Brian. She became pregnant and they divorced. However - don't you just love soap opera twists? - the baby was Brian's after all.
They reconciled, but things were never the same. Brian was stabbed to death as he tried to protect a woman from a group of thugs outside a nightclub.
Brian Tilsley was played by Christopher Quinten between 1978 and 1989.
3. "Weatherfield Gazette"- October 1997: "Man dies after car crashes into viaduct"

Answer: Don Brennan

Don Brennan was a taxi driver and a widower when he met Coronation Street resident, Ivy Brennan.
They married and were happy for a time, until he was forced away by Ivy and the ghosts of her past. (In fact Ivy was more than a little batty.)
They reconciled and lived together again, but she had turned to drink and eventually moved into a religious retreat - good riddance to one of the least-loved characters in the soap's history, many fans said.
Things went downhill for Don. A business he bought went bust, and he blamed the previous owner, Mike Baldwin. Don began a campaign against Baldwin, even kidnapping his girlfriend, Alma
On the fateful night, Brennan tried to drive his car into Baldwin but missed and struck the viaduct.
Don Brennan was played by Geoff Hinsliff between 1987 and 1997.

One night in June 2014, she had an argument with Carla's brother, Rob Donovan, and threatened to reveal all of his financial irregularities. He tried to kill her and she fell from a balcony in the builder's yard. She survived the fall, but Rob followed her down and struck her over the head. She died in hospital several days later.
Tina was played by Michelle Keegan.
5. "Weatherfield Gazette"- May 2012: "Woman electrocuted in kitchen sink drama"

Answer: Leslie Kershaw

A rather insensitive headline by the 'Gazette', even if factually accurate.
In 2011, Eileen Grimshaw began an affair with firefighter Paul Kershaw, not realising he had a secret: he was married. Not only that but his wife, Leslie, had early onset Alzheimer's.
Paul would not leave Leslie; nor did he want to give up on Eileen. So, they all ended up living at Eileen's House at 11 Coronation Street.
In May 2011, Lesley was alone in the house and was tidying up in the kitchen. Deciding that the electric toaster could do with a cleaning, in her confused mind she decided to wash the plugged-in toaster under running water. With predictable results.
Leslie Kershaw was played by Judy Holt between October 2011 and May 2012.
6. "Weatherfield Gazette"- April 2013: "Woman rescued from pub fire loses fight for life"

Answer: Sunita Alahan

Sunita Parekah was a shop worker who arrived in Coronation Street to avoid a forced marriage. She was given a job by Dev Alahan, who owned several shops at that time.
She had several relationships, before falling for Dev and they married.
Several years and the birth of twins later, Dev and Sunita, separated, only to get back together again.
In 2012, though, Sunita started an affair with Karl Munro, who was already in a relationship with Stella Price.
To cut a long story short, Karl and Stella fell out and Karl decided to destroy the pub that Stella ran.
Sunita saw him start a fire in the cellar after a struggle she fell down the stairs, Karl left her to die in the blazing pub, but she was rescued by firefighters. While she was in a coma in hospital, Karl visited and dislodged her breathing tubes. Sunita died.
Sunita Alahan was played by Shobna Gulati between 2001 and 2013.
7. "Weatherfield Gazette"- January 1999: Obituary: "Sad passing of former mayor who received OBE"

Answer: Alf Roberts

Alf Roberts was a popular figure in Weatherfield as an employee of the Post Office and in his role as a local councillor.
His first wife, Phylis, died in 1972 and he married Renee Bradshaw in 1978. Together they ran the corner shop. She died in a car crash in 1980.
In 1985 he married again, this time to local hairdresser Audrey Potter. Alf was a straightforward man who liked simple things: what he did not like was parting with money and his stinginess was a source of friction with Audrey. She did, though manage to get him to move out of Coronation Street to a more salubrious suburb of Weatherfield.
He served as mayor and was appointed OBE for his charity and community work.
He suffered a heart attack when he lost his council seat in 1987 and on New Year's Day 1989 suffered a fatal attack while attending a birthday party for Audrey's grandson.
Alf Robert was played by Bryan Mosley between 1961 and 1999.
8. "Weatherfield Gazette"- February 2010: Obituary: "Master butcher dies on wedding day"

Answer: Fred Elliott

Played with gusto by John Savident between 1994 and 2006, Fred Elliott was a well-loved character among fans of "Coronation Street".
Master butcher he may have been and he may have had a way with meat, but Fred was unlucky in love. He had three strong relationships, only to be turned down by each of his would-be paramours.
He did find happiness with Bev Unwin, and their marriage was organised. However, Audrey Roberts, one of his exes, confessed to Fred that she regretted turning him down. On the day of his wedding, Fred went to see her and told her he was marrying Bev. As he left Audrey's house, Fred suffered a stroke and died.
9. "Weatherfield Gazette"- February 2010: "Weatherfield man drowns in Windermere boating tragedy"

Answer: Joe McIntyre

Joe McIntyre was a conman. He was the father of Tina McIntyre who was dating David Platt. He began a relationship with David's mother Gail.
His troubles continued with disputes wth the neighbours of shoddy work he did and he became addicted to painkillers. With a loan shark circling looking for money, Joe hatched a plan to get all of his financial worries off his back.
He bought a boat and took it to Windermere in the Lake District. His plan was to fake his death and claim on the life insurance. After a suitable period lying low, he would start a new life on the proceeds. It all went horribly wrong when, first, Gail tried to stop him on the lakeside and then a squall blew up and he was knocked into the water, where he drowned.
Joe McIntyre was played by Reece Dinsdale between May 2008 and February 2010.
10. "Weatherfield Gazette"- March 2003 "Driver dies but four rescued as car plunges into canal"

Answer: Richard Hillman

In the long list of "Coronation Street" baddies, Richard Hillman was one of the baddest of all.
He arrived on the street in June 2001 and began a relationship with Gail Platt.
He went into business with Duggie Ferguson, but when Ferguson fell from a flight of stairs on a building site, Hillman left him for dead and went after his homey.
Hillman and Gail planned to marry, but his ex-wife turned up and threatened to expose him. He killed her with a shovel and buried her body.
He tried to defraud Audrey Roberts and tried to kill her for her money. He also attempted to murder Emily Bishop for her life insurance. He was interrupted in the act by Maxine Peacock, so he killed her.
He confessed all to Gail, then left the street. However, he returned and kidnapped Gail's children Sarah and David and granddaughter Bethany, and bound and gagged them in a car in his garage. He then waited on Gail at her house and took her to the garage and put her into the car as well.
When Audrey Roberts raised the alarm, Hillman with the Platts in his car drove off, pursued by other street residents. The car plunged into the canal. The Platts survived, but Hillman died.
More II: The portrayal of Richard Hillman earned Brian Capron 'Best Actor', 'Best 'Exit' and 'Villain of the Year' accolades at the British Soap Awards in 2003.
