Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Richard Rodgers won his Emmy in 1962 for the music he composed for the ABC documentary series "The Valiant Years", which was based on the memoirs of which politician?

Answer: Winston Churchill

"The Valiant Years" was a documentary series produced in 27 episodes, each 30 minutes long, which was broadcast on ABC between November 1960 and June 1961. Rodgers composed the score, which was orchestrated collectively by Eddie Sauter, Hershy Kay, and Robert Emmett Dolan.

This was not the first such documentary Rodgers had composed the music for, as almost ten years previously he had produced music that was used to form the basis of the score for the NBC documentary series "Victory at Sea".
2. During the early years of the Emmy Awards, the acting nominations were not for specific performances, but instead for the performer's overall body of work for the year. Among Helen Hayes' performances in 1953, the year she won the Best Actress award, was an episode of "Medallion Theatre" in which she played which American author?

Answer: Harriet Beecher Stowe

"Medallion Theatre" was an anthology series produced by CBS and broadcast live in 30 minute episodes between July 1953 and April 1954. The episode "Battle Hymn" was broadcast as the ninth episode of season two on 7 November 1953, and was the story of Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", was a significant influence on abolitionist sentiment in the years leading up to the American Civil War. Ten years prior to appearing as Stowe on television, Helen Hayes had played Stowe on Broadway in "Harriet", directed by Elia Kazan.

The following year, she appeared in "The Rockford Files" as Rita Capkovic, in the fourth season episode "The Paper Palace", for which she won her second Emmy, this time as Outstanding Lead Actress for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series.

This was the first of three episodes of "The Rockford Files" that Moreno appeared in as Rita, with performances in individual episodes in season 5 and season 6.

"He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin'" was a film produced and directed by Emile Ardolino for NBC focusing on d'Amboise and his work with the National Dance Institute, an organisation he founded in 1976 to teach and promote dance to schoolchildren. In addition to winning the Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program in 1984, the film was also awarded an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 1983, making it one of the few individual productions to win more than one of the EGOT awards.
5. Audrey Hepburn was awarded an Emmy in 1993 for a series she produced and appeared in for PBS focusing on one of her significant personal interests. Which area did the series focus on?

Answer: Gardening

"Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn" was a project that Audrey Hepburn started in 1990 as a way to bring not just her love of gardens to the screen, but also how they have interacted with art, literature and music. An initial one-hour episode was broadcast on PBS in March 1991, while the series of six 30-minute episodes was screened from January 1993; two further episodes were first broadcast in January 1996. Audrey Hepburn's Emmy was awarded posthumously, as she died one day prior to the broadcast of the first episode of the series in January 1993.
6. Marvin Hamlisch won a total of four Emmys, the first two of which came in 1995 for his work on the telecast of a concert by which female artist?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

Marvin Hamlisch and Barbra Streisand first worked together when he was recruited as a rehearsal pianist to work with the singer during rehearsals of the musical "Funny Girl". Hamlisch subsequently scored "The Way We Were", directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Streisand, as well as "The Mirror Has Two Faces", directed by Streisand in 1996.

In 1993, Streisand approached Hamlisch to serve as musical director for her planned tour, the first time she had staged a full set of concert dates. In August 1994, HBO broadcast "Barbra: The Concert", a recording of the final show of the tour in Anaheim, for which Hamlisch was awarded two Emmys, for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music Direction, and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music and Lyrics (for the song "Ordinary Miracles").

Answer: Mad About You

Mel Brooks made the first of four appearances in "Mad About You" as Uncle Phil in the fifth season episode "The Grant", which was followed by a second appearance the same season in "The Penis". For this second episode, in 1997 he won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, the first time he had won a major acting award.

In the two succeeding years, 1998 and 1999, he won two more Emmys for playing Uncle Phil in the episodes "Uncle Phil And The Coupons" and "Uncle Phil Goes Back To High School".
8. Mike Nichols won a total of four Emmy awards, with two in 2001 and two in 2004, each year winning a pair for work on the same production. Which British actress appeared in both of these productions?

Answer: Emma Thompson

In 2001, Nichols won his first two Emmys, for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special, and Outstanding Made for Television Movie, for the HBO film "Wit", which Nichols co-wrote with Emma Thompson as an adaptation of a Pulitzer winning stage play by Margaret Edson, with Thompson playing the lead role of Vivian Bearing. Three years later, Nichols received his second pair of Emmys, this time for the HBO miniseries "Angels in America".

He again won the Outstanding Director award, and also won the award for Outstanding Miniseries.

In this, Emma Thompson played three separate roles - Nurse Emily, the homeless woman, and the Angel America.
9. Whoopi Goldberg's two Emmys came not in the Primetime Emmy Awards, but instead in the separate Daytime Emmy Awards. Her first came as the host of a documentary looking at the life of which actor?

Answer: Hattie McDaniel

In 2001, AMC aired "Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel", produced and directed by Madison D. Lacy, an hour-long film looking at the life and career of Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Oscar, which she was awarded in 1940 for her performance in "Gone With the Wind".

The AMC documentary, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, focused on McDaniel's career in the face not just of the racism she faced, but also criticism from the black community.
10. Andrew Lloyd Webber is more known for stage shows than television. In 2018, he was awarded an Emmy for a live television broadcast of which of his stage productions?

Answer: Jesus Christ Superstar

In 2013, NBC began broadcasting annual live adaptations of stage musicals, beginning with "The Sound of Music". In May 2017, the network announced that their 2018 production would be Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's "Jesus Christ Superstar". For this production, both Lloyd Webber and Rice, along with John Legend (who also played the lead) won a Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).

The Emmy awarded to Lloyd Webber, Rice and Legend for "Jesus Christ Superstar" made them the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth individuals to achieve EGOT status.
