Glued to the TV 30 Years Ago: 1975 Emmys Quiz

The 1975/76 TV season was kind of important and maybe kind of not. Getting ready for college, finally having a job, etc. All that. But I viewed the Emmy Awards with interest. Who won back then?

Question 1 of 10
1. Turn down the K.C & The Sunshine Band, will you bro? I'm trying to watch the Emmy Awards. And skip on those 'boogie shoes' - I have the lucky displeasure of living with you and knowing how bad your feet stink. 'Groovy' shoes won't help. Anyway, here comes a cool category! Who will win for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for the 1975/76 season? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Now they are giving out the Outstanding Daytime Talk/Service/Variety Program. All these news bulletins coming in, though! Where is Iran? What is a Shah? Why are they taking hostages over there? Ted Koppel will fill us in later on his new late-night talk show. At any rate, who won in the mentioned category for the 1975/76 TV season? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "Mom, I don't really have to register for The Draft, do I?" "Yes, you do!" I get no cooperation. Exactly how far away is Canada? But I'm liking TV awards better than all that. The Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series went to whom for the 1975/76 season? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Yikes. How I loved my Pet Rock back then. No walking it, no pooper scooping behind it, no loud noises erupting from it. As a little Dino rested on my lap I was thrilled to see that this lady was named Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series for the 1975/76 season. Who was it? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. I was such a happy fellow back then. Even had an 8 Track player put into my car. I was wealthy, after all. Slinging burgers made me feel filthy (not to mention greasy) rich. But we're watching The Emmys now. Who was named Outstanding Actor In A Continuing Role In A Drama Series for the 1975/76 season? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Well, at least Richard Nixon has taken a stroll off into infamy. This new President, Gerald Ford, is a clumsy sort, though. Fun to see Chevy Chase have such a hysterical whack at him on that new show "Saturday Night Live"! I wonder if that one will last? But we're still at The Emmy Awards for the 1975/76 season. Who was named Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series all that time ago? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Got my white suit pressed back then. A dance contest tonight and I'm surely in it (even though I'm no Travolta). My dance partner shows up in this stunning red dress! We'd practiced like crazy in the back room of the restaurant we worked at - but to see her like this! No fast food bit about her appearance that night. Before we hop in the car I tell her that this guy was just named Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Or Comedy Special for 1975/76. Who was he? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. I remember having seen a new movie that year. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", they called it. That Jack Nicholson guy seems too nuts to not really be nuts. I didn't imagine much of a film career for him. But we're still looking at the Emmys for the 1975/76 TV season. What show was named Outstanding Daytime Game Or Audience Participation program back then? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "Love Will Keep Us Together"? "Muskrat Love"? Could The Captain and Tennille have made it cornier in the 70s? Every time I turned on the radio there they were. What was with Daryl (The Captain) Dragon's hat? I'll bet he was bald under there (turns out he was!). But we are wrapping up the "big" categories at Emmy time for 1975/76. What was named Outstanding Drama Series? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. My parents were a little obsessed with weight watching back then. In the cupboard were these things (they looked and tasted like caramel candy) that were supposed to reduce hunger. They were called "Ayds". Needless to say, in not too many years, calling something sounding like that wasn't a marketable feature and we never saw those again. Let's close this with asking who won for Outstanding Comedy Series for the 1975/76 season? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Betty White in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"

Hmmm. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" ruled the airwaves that year, and deservedly so. It spun off three spin-off shows ("Rhoda", "Phyllis" and "Lou Grant" - that last one giving Lou [Ed Asner] a very credible shot at getting off the curmudgeon routine and display his acting chops). "MTM" set a new standard, I think. Moore was the lead but they made sure everybody became stars. Betty White's turn at playing Sue Anne Nivens was a hoot! "The hormonal household guru"!

Answer: Dinah!

Many probably don't remember Dinah Shore. She had this welcoming prescence, could sing a song painlessly, and make us all feel totally comfortable too. It also helped that she wasn't a bit hard on the eyes. Phil Donahue stirred up morning talk later. Dinah made the coffee go down easy. She passed away of cancer in 1994.

Answer: Jack Albertson for "Chico And The Man"

How could it really not go to Albertson? He'd already won an Oscar (for "The Subject Was Roses" (1968)). He was awards waiting to happen. "Chico And The Man" was another of those sad turn of events. 'Chico' (Freddie Prinze, Sr.) decided to call it entirely quits and the show never got back up. It only ran from 1974 through 1977.
4. Yikes. How I loved my Pet Rock back then. No walking it, no pooper scooping behind it, no loud noises erupting from it. As a little Dino rested on my lap I was thrilled to see that this lady was named Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series for the 1975/76 season. Who was it?

Answer: Michael Learned in "The Waltons"

As effective as she was in the part, Learned was all wrong to be Olivia Walton. Just a mere 12 years older than Richard Thomas (her eldest son John Boy in the show). But she did what any good actress does and made it work. Grace and dignity. A good mix, despite the improbabilities. Jackson was never nominated. No one ever took "Charlie's Angels" seriously, even back then.

Answer: Peter Falk in "Columbo"

The NBC Sunday Mystery Movie was interesting as a certain number of shows alternated weekly. Falk's "Columbo" was really good and fun to watch. The rumpled detective who always looked baffled. Yet he always cracked the case.

Answer: Ellen Corby in "The Waltons"

Miss Corby had a really good career, even before her eternal association to the audience as Grandma Esther Walton. She was nominated for an Oscar for her work in 1948's "I Remember Mama"! She won for her role in "The Waltons" 3 times - and deserved to. During the course of the show she suffered a massive stroke but returned to the part after recovery, bravely showing the aftermath of her health crisis. Classy lady.

She died in 1999 at 88 years of age.
Who was he?

Answer: Anthony Hopkins in "The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case"

I confess to making this one hard. Actually, the category on the Emmys was impossible. How do you compare the two genres and pick a "best of"? I made up the Gleason and Wilson shows (neither happened) and "Henry VIII" would have been considered a series and not a special. That amazing actor who we now know as the dreadfully fascinating Hannibal Lecter won it that year, playing Bruno Hauptmann. The TV film, which I actually did see, danced around Bruno's guilt as to stealing and killing the Lindbergh tot. So has history. But Hopkins assuredly sealed his knack at looking scary and sympatico all at the same time in it.

We won the dance contest, by the way. Took no prisoners!

Answer: The $20,000 Pyramid

"Pyramid" has had staying power, that's for sure. Hosted back then by 'the fountain of youth poster boy' Dick Clark its newest version still thrives - now hosted by 'if you keep brushing those smiley white teeth you'll always look 17' Donny Osmond. I suppose the game's appeal is that you don't have to be particularly smart to play it.

As long as you can think of something that might be in one's back pocket in a few seconds, contestants were in for the prize. A prize, of course, that has gotten a bit bigger over the years.

Answer: Police Story

I must admit that I only saw "Police Story" in passing. It was good, though. It also set a standard for cop shows to come. There were really no 'leads' in it - an ensemble cast took care of the stories. Joseph Wambaugh, a notable ex-policeman, developed it. The show ran for just 4 years.

I'll bet most of you picked "The Waltons"! I sure would've!

Answer: The Mary Tyler Moore Show

C'mon now. No other to pick than "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" here. That show was a ratings/critical bulldog! Grant Tinker (Moore's husband at the time) built an empire out of it. They had a bit of a spit wondering what to make 'Mary Richards' at the time. Divorced? Single (AKA "old maid")? They settled with just letting her turn the world on with her smile. And a fine smile it was.

I hope you had some fun with this!
