Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fred served in WWI.

Answer: True

There are many episodes that refer to this fact. The one that comes to my mind is the episode where Lucy and Ricky need a farm hand. Fred sends in a letter explaining his qualifications, and in it states that he is a reliable veteran of WWI.
2. Fred loves boats.

Answer: False

Absolutely not! Fred gets seasick. In the episode entitled "Staten Island Ferry", Fred and Ethel come in arguing about Fred's seasickness. Ethel brings up the time when he served in France-he went over on a boat. Fred's retort is that he only went on the boat because his superior officer had a bayonette in his back.
3. Fred was from the Midwest.

Answer: True

Ohio to be exact. There are several references to this, one coming in episode 134 entitled "Face to Face". Ricky and Lucy do a TV interview with Edward Warren, along with Fred and Ethel. As soon as Fred gets on TV, he says: "Hello all my friends out in Stubenville Ohio! Hey all you guys down at Joe and Bill's Barber shop!"
4. Fred was in vaudeville.

Answer: True

He was part of the act "Mertz and Kurtz". Mr. Kurtz' name changes in the show. First it was Ted, but then it was changed to Barney. That is in the episode entitled "Mertz and Kertz". Barney Kurtz sends postcards from all over the world to impress Fred and Ethel, but in reality works as a cook in the Bronx.
5. Fred was a big spender.

Answer: False

A big FALSE for that one! Fred was the king of the cheapskates. Or as Ricky would put it: "tightskate". There's no need to refer to any episode about this one-I think it's in pretty much every one of them!
6. Fred spoke German.

Answer: True

In the episode "Staten Island Ferry", Fred says 'get me a glass of beer' in German. In the episodes when they are in Switzerland, Fred is the one who (kind of) serves as the interpreter. I did the same thing for my Irish family when I went to Italy. I'm not fluent, but I guess serving as the interpreter merits speaking a language. So--Fred spoke German.
7. Fred played the violin.

Answer: True

He's a bit rusty, though. He hadn't played since a Roosevelt rally...Teddy that is.
8. Fred liked steak.

Answer: True

The reference for this one is in the earlier episodes. In "The Girls Want To Go To a Nightclub", Fred is very excited about the fact that he and Ricky can go to Charlie's and have a big steak with raw onions all over them. Ricky is more concerned about the fact that Lucy said she had a date for the evening.
9. Fred once bought a 1933 Cadillac convertible to go to California.

Answer: False

It was a 1923 Cadillac. He bought it from Al Hergesheimer over in Brooklyn. This is in the episode entitled "Getting Ready".
10. Fred wears glasses.

Answer: True

My favorite reference to this fact is in "Lucy in the Swiss Alps". Ethel accidentally sat on Fred's glasses and as a result he wound up sending Ricky's entire band to Locarno instead of Luzern. Later in the episode, the four of them are stuck in a small lodge.

They all decided to tell each other the truth about things. As they apologize for some of the thoughtless things they said earlier, Fred tells Ethel: "I'm sorry you're so fat you broke my glasses". Hehehehe. Gotta love Fred.
11. Fred had a habit of jingling his keys.

Answer: True

This is in the episode "In Palm Springs". Lucy reads an article in the paper that she finds quite amusing. A woman was arrested for hitting her husband. Ricky doesn't see the humor, so Lucy continues. This woman's husband had a habit of cracking his knuckles.

The wife told him that if he did it one more time, she would hit him. He did and she cracked him with a baseball bat. An arguement between the four of them about habits ensues, and Fred's habit of key-jingling is brought out here.
12. Fred actually had hair in an episode.

Answer: True

The episode is the very first Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. The episode is a flashback to how Lucy and Ricky met, and how they met the Mertzes. And yes, Fred actually does have hair.
13. Fred and Ethel were the same age.

Answer: False

Fred was quite older than Ethel, although he always made cracks about her being much older than she was.
14. Fred was left-handed.

Answer: False

In the episode "Don Juan is Shelved", Lucy tries to get Ricky some fans. She decides to write 500 letters to Ricky. Fred and Ethel, of course, wind up helping her with this. After the first 100, Lucy reminds them not to forget to change hands so that Ricky doesn't recognize the handwriting. Fred is at this time already writing with his left hand, and tells Ethel that he has done so.

She replies, "Your left what, foot?"
15. Fred and Ethel had grown children.

Answer: False

I figured I'd give you an easy one to close with. We all know that Fred and Ethel had no children. It was never even referred to.
