Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the pilot episode, "Mr. Big" there is a password used about a certain baseball team. What was it?

Answer: New York Mets win doubleheader

Max is told he will work with Agent 99 on this case. The chief says 99 will use the phrase "New York Mets win doubleheader" to find Max. However, no mention is made of the fact that 99 is a woman, so when a young boy reads the day's headline of "New York Mets win doubleheader" to his mother, Max thinks he's Agent 99 rather than just a random kid. Max then notices the paper and sees what happened.

The real 99 then says the password and Max says "I know, I know" not realizing that she is giving the password until she says the score was 99 to 86 (Max's agent number being 86).

The likelihood of the Mets actually winning a doubleheader in 1965 when this episode aired was actually pretty small. They only won 50 games the whole season and finished the season 15 games behind the next to last place team.

While the Dodgers did win the World Series that year it wasn't until about a month after the episode aired. The Minnesota Twins didn't lose all that often that year, they finished with the best record in the majors. The A's didn't move to Oakland for another three years.
2. In the episode "Diplomat's Daughter", Max receives a call on his shoe phone from the chief and asks the chief for the password. What is the chief's response?

Answer: "Get in here, Max, or I'll personally tear you apart."

While Max is getting his shoes shined he receives a call on his shoe phone. After asking the shiner to do the other shoe, Max picks it up and hears the chief's voice. Rather than accepting it at face value he asks the chief who it is and the follows up by asking for today's password.

When the chief tells him there's no time, Max insists the chief further identify himself with a countersign or a secret code number. That's when the chief threatens Max with bodily harm which Max decides is good enough for him.
3. "School Days" takes place at spy school. The password starts, "When the moon is full". How does it end? (Hint: the answer is also the name of a song by Blondie.)

Answer: The tide is high

The episode starts off with an elaborate walk by Max as he receives his identity papers, his password, and his morning newspaper from a milkman, a passing business man, and a paperboy. He then rings the doorbell of the nearby house and when an elderly lady opens it, he gives the password. Her response? "You must want the spy school. That's next door."
4. "Too Many Chiefs" has a very intricate sign and countersign. However, the imposter chief changes it to something much simpler. What is the new countersign which gained a new significance in the 1980s?

Answer: The chief says "Apples" and Max says "McIntosh".

The chief starts with "The migrating birds fly low over the sea". The responder says "Shadeless windows admit no light." The chief comes back with "The wingless dove protects its nest." The responder concludes with "The toothless tiger rules the restless jungle." Max has some problems with this when he tries it out but 99 and the chief successfully identify one another.

The imposter, who doesn't know the countersign, tells Max that there's a new countersign. Thanks to Steve Jobs, Apples and Macintosh gained a new significance in the world of computers and personal electronics.
5. The password in "Aboard the Orient Express" is also the name of a former African country and one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. What is it?

Answer: Tanganyika

Tanganyika gained independence from Great Britain in 1961 before merging with Zanzibar in 1964 to form Tanzania. Lake Tanganyika is one of the African Great Lakes and is the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume.

In the "Get Smart" episode, it becomes very difficult for Max to determine who his contact is when just about everyone on the train mentions Tanganyika.

This was also the first of three "Get Smart" episodes to feature a cameo by Johnny Carson. He plays a conductor stamping passports as they enter and leave Lichtenstein (a country that takes about 30 seconds to traverse in the episode). He appears again at the end of the episode to collect tickets.
6. What animal completes the following password from "Double Agent"? "The ______ fly high."

Answer: Geese

Max infiltrates a KAOS group in this episode. The password is "The geese fly high" with a response of "The frost is on the grass". However, it turns out that all of the members of the organization are double agents working for various government agencies and they all give the password just after Max wounds them.

For some reason, this particular password, "The geese fly high" is one that I've remembered for the 40 or so years since I first saw it and this has remained one of my personal favorite episodes.
7. What three colors, the first two of which can be combined to make up the third, complete the following sign and counter from "Back to the Old Drawing Board"? "The _____ sun melts the _____ snow."; "The _____ water runs uphill."

Answer: Blue; Red; Purple

This episode was the first appearance of Hymie the robot, a KAOS robot sent out to destroy Max. When Hymie first meets a CONTROL agent, he does not know the countersign so the agent tries to subdue him but is unable. However, now Hymie knows the password for when he meets Max.

There is another sign/counter in the episode when Max talks to Agent 44 hidden inside a grandfather clock. Max says, "Is the wind fair to Java?" to which 44 replies "All clear, no storm on the horizon." Max then starts discussing the weather with 44, not realizing that all 44 had done was give the countersign. They then debate who was giving the right counter-counter-sign.
8. "Smart, the Assassin" doesn't have a password, but KAOS kidnaps Max and brainwashes him to shoot the chief as soon as the chief says what word?

Answer: Checkmate

Max and the chief have been playing chess at the Regency Club with the chief always winning. So in order to eliminate the chief and have Max executed for murder, KAOS brainwashes Max so that when someone says checkmate, Max shoots to kill the person who said it.

In this case, when the chief wins, the KAOS agent is so excited, he shouts out "checkmate" before the chief does so Max shoots him rather than the chief.
9. In "Ship of Spies", Max is supposed to whistle what tune to let the chief know the informant has walked into the bar?

Answer: Yankee Doodle

Max is supposed to whistle Yankee Doodle but he has just eaten a mouthful of crackers and just spits out cracker crumbs.

"Ship of Spies" is the first multi part episode of "Get Smart". This was from Part 1.
10. When agent 47 is killed in "Strike While the Agent is Hot", he leaves Max a clue that turns out to be the name of a children's book, although no one recognizes it at first. What is it?

Answer: The Little Red Tractor That Huffed and Puffed

"The Little Red Tractor That Huffed and Puffed" was the name of a book in a KAOS run bookstore which was also a password. When someone asked for the book they were referred to a specific page number which corresponded to the location in the bookstore where a key to a locker was kept so the agent could smuggle counterfeit money.

When Max couldn't decipher the clue he was given about "The Little Red Tractor That Huffed and Puffed" he went back and was given a copy of another book, "The Little Old Lady Who Lived in a Spaceship".
