Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the season opener, viewers were introduced to Owen Hunt, a military doctor. He ended up saving Cristina Yang's life when she was involved in a freak accident. What happened?

Answer: She was stabbed by an icicle.

The season opener was titled "Dream a Little Dream of Me, Parts 1 and 2". In the middle of a fight with Meredith about Meredith constantly talking about Derek moving in with her, Cristina walked out the front doors of the hospital and slipped on a patch of ice.

While she was on the ground, a big icicle fell from the roof and impaled Cristina in the abdomen. Major Owen Hunt, a trauma surgeon who, until recently, had been serving in the Middle East, was at the hospital because he'd done emergency triage on a patient involved in another accident.

He saved Cristina, and then accepted a job as an attending at Seattle Grace. He and Cristina flirted with each other and slowly began building a relationship throughout the season, while trying to overcome the psychological damage the war had done to Owen.
2. What hospital department did the residents experience for the first time this season, and enjoyed visiting there?

Answer: Dermatology

In the episode, "Brave New World", Cristina had to go to the dermatology department because a patient of hers had a rash. She was amazed at what she found there - a calm, serene oasis in the hospital where they had free juice and doctors got to take long lunch breaks.

It was a totally different environment than the pit or the operating room that the surgical residents were used to. Cristina let her friends in on the secret, and she, Izzie, Meredith and George hung out in dermatology when they needed some peace and quiet.
3. In this season, Dr. Bailey was involved with trying to pull off a "domino surgery". What was involved in this procedure?

Answer: Kidney transplants

In "There's No 'I' in Team", Dr. Bailey had six patients who needed kidney transplants. Each of those patients had a friend or family member who was willing to donate a kidney, but who were not a good donor match for the person they knew who needed a transplant.

The idea of the domino surgery was that each donor would donate to a stranger. The friend or family member of that recipient stranger would then donate to someone else, and so on and so on until all of the patients in need had received someone's kidney.

Despite some problems among the patients, including one donor who did not want his father's life saved, the surgeries went smoothly, and Seattle Grace gained national recognition for pulling off the procedure.
4. What was the name of Meredith's friend, who briefly joined the hospital staff in the fifth season?

Answer: Sadie

Melissa George joined temporarily joined the cast of "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Sadie Harris, a friend of Meredith's from medical school. She first appeared in the episode "These Ties That Bing". Meredith and Sadie called each other "Death and Die", the last syllables of their names (sort of), in reference to the fact that they were both 'dark and stormy' kind of people instead of happiness and sunshine.

After a brief flirtation with Dr. Callie Torres, Sadie quit her job at the hospital in favor of continuing her travels in the episode "Before and After".
5. What unorthodox method did the interns use to help themselves learn?

Answer: They practiced performing procedures on each other.

Fed up with not getting any time in the OR, the interns, led by Lexie and Sadie, started practicing on themselves in the episode "These Ties That Bind". It started out harmlessly enough, with the interns practicing sutures and inserting IVs. They kicked things up a notch, though, in the next episode "In the Midnight Hour", when Sadie volunteered to let Lexie and the other take her appendix out for practice. Things went wrong and Lexie had to go to Meredith and ask for help. Meredith, Cristina and Dr. Bailey managed to save Sadie from any real damage, but the gig was up, and the Chief found out about the interns' activities.

They were all put on probation.
6. What new surgical specialty did Dr. Bailey pursue in this season?

Answer: Pediatrics

The fifth season saw the introduction of Peds surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw). She and Dr. Bailey worked together on a case of a young boy who needed a kidney transplant in the episode "Wish You Were Here". Another doctor, Dr. Dixon (a cardiologist with Asperger's syndrome) later commented on Bailey's knack for dealing with young patients, and Bailey decided that she would like to pursue a fellowship in pediatric surgery, much to the Chief's chagrin.

He had been grooming Dr. Bailey to be the hospital's best general surgeon, and future Chief of Surgery. Dr. Bailey was accepted into the pediatrics program, but later decided to stick with general surgery.
7. A special crossover episode with "Private Practice" saw Dr. Addison Montgomery (formerly Montgomery-Shepherd) return to Seattle with a VIP patient. Who?

Answer: Her brother

The two-part crossover was the episodes "Before and After" and "An Honest Mistake". In "Before and After", Addison and her friends Sam and Naomi Bennett (starring characters on "Private Practice") brought Addison's brother, Archer, to Seattle because he had a neurological condition that other surgeons had said could not be fixed. Addison needed Derek to fix it.

After Derek operated on Archer in the first part of the crossover, Addison stayed in town to help with a sick pregnant patient in the second part.
8. What was Izzie diagnosed with?

Answer: Skin cancer

Earlier in the season, Izzie had started hallucinating her dead fiancé, Denny Duquette. He was very real to her; she could physically touch and feel the hallucination. The hallucinations began interfering with her relationship with Alex, however, and when she tried to tell Denny to leave her alone, he said he couldn't and that he was "here for you [Izzie]".

She finally realized that meant that he was there to show her that something was wrong with her, and she secretly tested herself at the hospital and saw a dermatologist, and found out she had stage four melanoma that had metastasized to her brain and other parts of her body.

In the episode "Elevator Love Letter", Derek, who had previously lost his confidence after losing a patient on his table, had to regain it and come back to work to operate on Izzie.

The operation went fine and Izzie underwent IL-2 treatments, but found out there was another tumor and had to be operated on again. This operation was more risky, and when she first woke up, she'd lost her memory.

She regained it, however, but then flatlined at the very end of the season finale, "Now or Never", leaving viewers to wait for the next season to see if she was okay.
9. What career move did George decide on at the end of the season?

Answer: He was going to join the army.

Dr. George O'Malley, under the wing of Dr. Owen Hunt, had discovered that he is very good in stressful situations, and Dr. Hunt told him that his specialty should be trauma. In the season finale, "Now or Never", he delivered shocking news to his fellow doctors: he'd enlisted in the army to go to Iraq as a trauma surgeon.

There were mixed reactions among his friends, notably shock and distress, but George didn't quite make it to Iraq. His friends were even more shocked to discover that the John Doe they'd been working on who'd been hit by a bus was none other than their good friend, George O'Malley. Like Izzie, he also flatlined at the very end of the season finale, leaving viewers clueless as to whether he survived or not.
10. On which unlikely piece of paper did Derek and Meredith sign their names to seal their wedding vows, exchanged in the doctors' locker room?

Answer: A post-it

Derek had finally proposed to Meredith at the end of the episode "Elevator Love Letter". They'd started wedding planning after that, or rather, Izzie started wedding planning for them, while she was recovering from her operation and cancer treatments.

When Izzie still wasn't well and needed the second risky operation, however, Derek and Meredith stepped aside and Izzie and Alex got married instead in the episode "What a Difference a Day Makes". Derek and Meredith later just married themselves on a post-it note in the locker room, and stuck the post-it in her cubby.
