quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Paul Merton's greatest educational achievement?

Answer: Metalwork CSE, ungraded

In the commentary on the DVD, Paul reveals that Stephen Fry congratulated him on this very funny joke and he had to admit that he really does only have metalwork CSE, ungraded. It's no joke.
2. In response to a tirade from Paul about the value of comedy, Angus replies that's it's a good idea to analyse what you're doing. Paul begs Angus not to analyse what he's doing. What does Paul suggest this ill-advised analysis would come out as?

Answer: Reading out loud

One of many autocue jokes aimed at Angus.
3. Who gets up from her seat next to Ian to smell Angus in reponse to a critic's saying he always seemed well-deoderised?

Answer: Angela Rippon

...leading to a very confused, and bright red Angus Deayton.
4. After the incident above what did Paul claim the critics had said about him, presumably hoping the lady from the previous question would check that as well?

Answer: He didn't wear underwear

Needless to say Angela Rippon declined the unspoken offer to root around in Paul's trousers.
5. Who appears on the show, on Paul's team, via a satellite link?

Answer: David Shayler

Some of the most hysterical moments from this show come from a very pissed off Paul switching off the TV set and wandering off to find a newspaper. Ronnie Biggs has never appeared on the show, which I think is a great great shame.
6. A question comes up regarding the West Midlands police who, it was told, recorded policeman whistling theme tunes from television shows to play in the street to make residents feel more secure. What tune does Ian whistle to demonstrate the idea?

Answer: Hawaii Five Oh

Paul refuses to believe Angus that this story is true and produces a mobile phone to ring the West Midlands police to corroborate the story. I think this must be one of the few times that the action of dialling a mobile phone has got a laugh.
7. As part of a very long running joke, which 'celebrity' has Ian been likened too and has mimicked as part of a one-off round?

Answer: Jimmy Somerville

My favourite Jimmy Somerville joke comes from Paul. In response to Ian revealing that he was in the officer corps at school, Paul asks whether he was ordered to polish boots with the words 'I want to be able to see Jimmy Somerville's face in them boots'...
8. The team have been obsessed with many politicians over the years. Which politican has been, by far, their favourite?

Answer: Jeffrey Archer

So obsessed have they been, that in one of their 'mastermind' rounds Ian chose Jeffrey Archer as his specialist subject.
9. Which politician was replaced by a tub of lard when he pulled out of the show at the last minute, announced with the words 'liable to give much the same performance...a tub of lard'?

Answer: Roy Hattersley

Remarkably Paul still went on to win this show, even though he was accompanied by a tub of lard and some of his questions were in foreign languages, leading Ian to whine; 'I feel like Graham Taylor'.
10. And a nice easy one to finish...Which magazine is Ian Hislop the editor of?

Answer: Private Eye

If you didn't get that one and you call yourself a fan of the show then shame on you. Shame!
