Wolfgang Petersen is famous for 'Das Boot', Douglas Sirk (born Hans Detlef Sierck) was a film director from the last century. Peter Lorre was a German actor.
2. At the start of every episode (except the first one), one of the people in the series tells us what has happened last time. Who is he?

Answer: Glasisch Karl

With the help of some photographs, the story as it has unfolded is being told.
3. What is another particular feature of 'Heimat'?

Answer: It is alternately in black and white and in color

Also, the actors speak in dialect most of the time.

Answer: Just after World War I

Paul Simon returns to his home village after having survived the terrible carnage of trench warfare.
5. The story takes place in Schabbach. In which part of Germany is that village located?

Answer: The Hunsrück

You won't find Schabbach on a map as it is a fictitious village. The Hunsrück is located just north of the French border and east of the Luxembourg border.
6. Who's the first person we see?

Answer: Paul

He descends from a hill, overlooking the village where he was born and raised.
7. Who is the central figure in the series?

Answer: Maria

As the story takes us through the 20th century, we see Maria Wiegand getting old. She is being played by just one actress: Marita Breuer.
8. Paul's brother is Eduard, who stayed behind in Schabbach as the war raged. Why?

Answer: He was too sickly

His hobby is photography.
9. Next to (or maybe instead of) women, Paul's main interest is what?

Answer: Radios

At one point he succeeds to make a radio with which he receives broadcasts from around Europe. Later on, he will make a living out of it as a businessman.

Answer: No

It is Apollonia, an exotic looking beauty. She eventually runs off with a French officer.
