Answer: Sam

Sam is a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox an alcoholic and a womaniser. This makes him sound horrible, but he is actually a very nice man. He owns the bar for the first few series and then sells it to a company called Lillian when he decides to go round the world.

Answer: Norm

Norm is a regular who sits on a stool at the bar, drinks beer and puts the world to rights. He is an unhappy accountant and is married to Vera, who is a mystery figure often mentioned but never seen except in one episode when her face is covered in pie thrown by Diane.

Answer: Mailman

Cliff sees his job as a mailman as rather dashing and romantic, but is regarded as the bar bore. He is in his forties and still lives with his mother, and has no girlfriend.

Answer: Woody

Woody is a country boy and his simplicity contrasts well with the sophistication of the other staff of Cheers, especially Sam and Carla.

Answer: A restaurant

Melville's Seafood occupies the floor above Cheers. From series nine onwards this is owned by John Allen Hill, and he and Sam Malone have many spats. The real Cheers, i.e. The Bull and Finch Pub in Beacon Street on Beacon Hill Massachusetts, has both floors and Melville's Seafood does not exist.

Diane has an on off relationship with Sam Malone but was with Frasier for a year, and they go to Europe to marry. However, Diane jilts Frasier at the altar. He later meets and marries a fellow psychiatrist Lilith, and they have a son called Frederick.

Woody and Kelly meet when he and Sam work as bartenders at a party in her home. In the tenth series they marry and their wedding is a complete disaster. The minister dies, Rebecca insults the chef and he walks out leaving her in charge of the catering, and two fierce dogs threaten the guests.

Rebecca Howe, played by Kirstie Alley, is immune to Sam's famous charms, and he finds this hard to understand. Although at first she seems to be entirely calm and in control, we gradually learn that she is as vulnerable as anyone else. She was overshadowed as a child by her successful family and, as a result, is frighteningly ambitious.

Frasier Crane, who is a psychiatrist, moves back to his hometown Seattle to take up a position as a radio host advising people on their emotional problems. His elderly father, Martin, who is an ex-cop with a hip injury, moves in with him. Frasier's brother Niles, his producer Roz and Daphne, Martin's physical therapist, make up the team.

Answer: James Burrows, Les Charles and Glen Charles

The brothers Glen and Les Charles were brought up in Henderson Nevada. They both began their scriptwriting careers working on 'M.A.S.H.' and went on to write for 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show', 'Phyllis' and 'The Bob Newhart Show'. They were head writers on the popular show 'Taxi'.

Whilst working on 'Taxi,' they got to know James Burrows and the three created 'Cheers' together. James Burrows has also written for 'Will and Grace'.
