Two children suddenly rush onto the road, right in front of Hawkeye's jeep. In order to avoid them he takes a sharp turn and the jeep ends up on its side. An injured and disoriented Hawkeye is helped into a local hut by the family that lives there.

Hawkeye alarmingly finds blood after surveying his scalp. Suffering from symptoms such as an elevated pulse and profuse sweating, he believes that he has suffered a concussion.

In a prior episode, Hawkeye claimed to have come from Vermont, but here he is firmly established as a resident of Maine. He is proud of his heritage, and breaks out into patriotic song, singing 'Yankee Doodle Dandy', followed by a later reprise, but as 'Yankee Doodle Herring'.

Hawkeye claims to have enjoyed 'dissecting' whitefish during his off-time at medical school. He desires a small piece of whitefish, or herring with sour cream and onions. Hawkeye makes mention of a place called Sol and Sol's Delicatessen, where he ate many a delicious meal.

Hawkeye is an only child, which contradicts an earlier episode when he claimed to have a sister. Here, he claims that his parents stopped with him. 'I guess when they had me my parents decided not to 'sibble' anymore,' Hawkeye explains in his usual jocular manner.

Hawkeye continues with 'Cow Green Was My Valley', but then says, 'Nah, that's cheap.' Interestingly, Harry Morgan, who had recently been added as Colonel Potter during season four of 'M*A*S*H', was Henry Fonda's co-star in 'The Ox-Bow Incident'.

Hawkeye displays some Boston pride during his monologue. He claims that all the great plays come through Boston first, before making their runs elsewhere. Hawkeye claims to have seen 'Oklahoma', 'The King and I' and 'South Pacific' there. He then sings a few lines from the 'South Pacific' tune 'Some Enchanted Evening'.

Hawkeye refers to the 'world famous opposible thumb' as a 'wondrous mechanism'. He describes the important uses of the thumb in history, for example as the sign that a gladiator would live or die in ancient Rome, as a method of getting from one place to another - hitch-hiking and as a way to cradle someone's chin. He then demonstrates his amazing skills with his thumbs by juggling.
