'M*A*S*H' - 'Some 38th Parallels' Quiz

Nothing steams the doctors at the 4077th more than overly ambitious army commanders that put their soldiers at excessive risk on the battlefield. This episode is about just such a commander. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the operating room, the doctors at the 4077th are working hard on yet another batch of wounded soldiers. Hawkeye claims that he has calculated how much each operation he has performed in Korea would cost the army, if he were to charge. What amount is the result of this careful calculation?

Answer: A nickel

Hawkeye's calculation works out like this...all the work he has done divided by the time he has been in the army. The result of this inexplicable calculation, a nickel an operation. I think this is Hawkeye's comment on just exactly how extremely busy the doctors have been since coming to Korea.
2. While Hawkeye thinks of the fees he should be charging the army, Frank's mind is on trash. Specifically, Frank wants to start charging the locals for the refuse that they have been collecting from the 4077th. Hawkeye agrees. He believes that if the locals get free garbage from the 4077th, the next thing they will want is what U.S. state?

Answer: New Jersey

'Frank's right!' Hawkeye exclaims, 'Give these people a taste of our garbage and next they'll want New Jersey.' Why New Jersey has such a bad name, I'll never know. I was born there! Frank insists that the locals pay for the refuse, including tin cans, egg shells, pus-filled bandage and germ-filled tongue depressors -- 'every rind, every drop of swill'.
3. In the kitchen, Klinger has pulled KP duty. Radar visits Klinger there, where the lad can fix a quick sandwich. What part of his body does Klinger claim his mother treasures?

Answer: Hands

Despite the fact that his father was horrified at baby Klinger ('Thanks for the eight-pound baby nose', he claimed), his mother was immediately enamored by the baby's hands. So great was her awe at his hands, she insisted that Klinger's father get him a violin. Amos, Klinger's father, promptly stole a violin for the boy.
4. After an intense session in the operating room, Hawkeye savors a date with Nurse Able. What particular situation arises that makes his time with Nurse Able less enjoyable?

Answer: He discovers that he is impotent

This incredibly embarrassing situation is happily interrupted when Hawkeye is called to post-op. Later, Hawkeye chats with both BJ and Colonel Potter about his little problem, and he seems to be over it by the end of the episode.
5. In the Swamp that evening, BJ and Hawkeye chat. All the while, BJ engages in an activity that he claims reminds him of home. What activity is this?

Answer: Washing socks

BJ mentions argyle socks, angora sweaters, Woody Herman and 'fumbling in rumble seats' as nostalgic activities. Washing his socks is a diversion even more than it is a hygienic concern for BJ, apparently!
6. A certain Colonel Coner has arrived at the 4077th, injured and in need of surgery. The doctors at the M*A*S*H are not too fond of this Colonel, as he seems to have a knack for keeping the hospital busy. What activity does he engage in, exactly, that creates so many wounded?

Answer: He retrieves the bodies of dead soldiers behind enemy lines

Colonel Coner has a very nonchalant attitude about his troops and his duties. His seeming indifference to the soldiers under him really rankles the doctors, especially Hawkeye.

By the way, Colonel Coner is played by actor Kevin Hagen, who also appeared in the later 'M*A*S*H' episode 'Peace on Us'. He also appeared as Dr. Hiram Baker in well over 100 episodes of 'Little House on the Prairie'.
7. Radar chats with a young soldier named Private Phelan whose life he helped save earlier in the episode. During his conversation with Phelan, Radar claims to have visited what impressive monument?

Answer: Mount Rushmore

Private Phelan, played by George O'Hanlon Jr., is from Chicken Falls, South Dakota, not far from Mount Rushmore. Radar excitedly claims to have visited Mount Rushmore, and that when he was there, the army was cleaning out Lincoln's nose.
8. What two things does Radar mention missing the most about 'home', during his conversation with Private Phelan?

Answer: The grass and the sky

Radar claims to miss the grass, the sky and 'everything'. Sadly, this will be the last conversation he has with Private Phelan, who dies later in the episode. Radar is stunned that a boy his age could be there one minute and gone the next. BJ attempts to console him, but Radar is still in shock at the end of the episode.
9. When Frank puts the garbage up at auction, Hawkeye outbids the locals and 'wins' the camp refuse.

Answer: True

Hawkeye and BJ show up at the auction, where Frank seems to believe he will garner good money for the 4077th's junk. Hawkeye asks BJ to bid $5 over the highest bid...it seems that he has mischievous plans in mind. Indeed, later in the episode, he has the garbage dumped on Colonel Coner's head.
10. What outdoor activity do Hawkeye and Colonel Potter engage in while the former seeks advice from the latter?

Answer: Horseshoes

Hawkeye seeks advice from Colonel Potter regarding his impotence. Colonel Potter claims to have had the same problem during World War I, but that he recovered by World War II. Potter claims that Hawkeye needs to 'aim two feet beyond the stake', in other words, he needs to learn to unwind. After dumping garbage on Colonel Coner, Hawkeye's problem seems to be solved!
