The real culprit was her fiancé. Susan's father was wanting her to accompany him on a trip around the world to sketch famous landmarks for a set of dishes he was going to market.

Donald Bellisario's wife at the time, Deborah Pratt, and Tom Selleck's present wife, Jillie Mack, starred respectively in this episode as T.C.'s girlfriend and a party girl that comes to T.C. and Rick's guest house party.

Back in 1979, Magnum was seen with longer hair and driving a blue Volkswagen. His first case also led him to use Rick for the first time to run down a license plate and T.C. flew Magnum for the first time.

While stranded at sea, Magnum thought a lot about the last time he saw his father. During their last trip together as a family, Magnum had told his father about the monster that lived in his room. Magnum's father told him that if he named the monster if wouldn't be so scary so they called the monster Herman. Magnum gave the shark the same name as the monster that lived in his room as a child.

Magnum had just started to watch a baseball game that aired in the early Hawaiian hours when the game was interrupted by a news broadcast at Rick's club. Magnum rushed down to the club to learn that three men wearing a rabbit, pig, and gorilla mask robbed the club. By listening to the stories from Rick, T.C., and Higgins, Magnum was able to piece together the real criminal in the theft.

In "Operation: Silent Night", Magnum, Higgins, T.C., and Rick were stranded on a island designated as a Navy fire zone when T.C.'s chopper broke down. As the guys flew into the night, they all sang "Silent Night".

Larry Manetti, who plays Orville "Rick" Wright, had stated that this episode was his favorite of the series.

Shannon Doherty starred as Ima Platt, the daughter of boxer Leon Platt. While using Magnum's Ferrari while he was on business, T.C. injured Leon Platt in an accident. To repay him for his part in the accident, T.C. took Leon's place in the boxing ring. When Leon's daughter, Ima, was kidnapped Higgins called Magnum back from his business trip to help save Ima and Leon.

Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker of the Detroit Tigers appeared as themselves in a Detroit bar to buy Magnum a drink and give him a free ticket to the baseball game.

Higgins cast parts in "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime" for the musical Mikado. When two of the women that were going to play geisha's bowed out at the last minute, Rick and T.C. took their place to star alongside Agatha. Meanwhile, Magnum realized that his client, Sally Deforest, was out to kill a visiting castmate of the performance and he had invited her to stay at Robin's Nest for her protection.

The title of the episode came from the Gilbert and Sullivan play, "The Mikado".
