Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many finalists made it to the MasterChef Canada kitchen?

Answer: Sixteen

After the initial audition rounds, fifty contestants were narrowed down to twenty-six and brought together to cook for the judges to earn themselves the coveted MasterChef apron and a chance to become Canada's first winning home cook. To do this, the twenty-six chefs were given one chicken, one pan, and one burner (with a limited pantry) and told to make a dish to earn them a spot in sixty minutes. Twelve were sent into the kitchen immediately while eight others still on the fence were whittled down to four and added to the final total of sixteen home cooks.
2. During the first Elimination Test of the competition, two home cooks were sent packing. They had to cook with what 'sea-inspired' ingredient?

Answer: Smelts

In their first day in the MasterChef kitchen, the home cooks were met with a Mystery Box Challenge which was subsequently won by Marida and her Pork and Noodle Stir-Fry with a Peanut Vinaigrette. She had the opportunity to both choose the ingredient of the upcoming 'Land, Sea, and Air' Elimination Test and sit out the round with another competitor (she chose Brooke).

She ended up forcing the other competitors to use smelts over duck and venison for their dishes and, as such, both Ben and Meagan were sent home for their poor offerings to the judges, leaving fourteen in the game.
3. The first Pressure Test of the competition involved cooking food for which of these major sports teams?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

Heading into their first Pressure Test, the fourteen remaining home cooks ended up at center ice of the Air Canada Center, tasked with making meals for the Toronto Maple Leafs and their alumni. Both teams needed to make a fish meal with two sides and a pasta meal. Since Pino and Dale had the best dishes from the previous Elimination Challenge, they chose the teams. Ultimately, after fifty-one people dined, Pino's blue team ended up winning sending Dale's group into the first Pressure Test...where he chose to send all but himself and Danny into the challenge.
4. Which of these dishes was not created by the chefs during a Pressure Test in this season of the show?

Answer: Eggs three ways

Pressure Tests, like in the U.S. version of "MasterChef", followed Team Challenges during the run of the show, and many of them featured dishes considered difficult and highly-technical by even the most famous cooks. In order, the home cooks needed to prepare Raviolo al Uovo, cheesecake, salmon wellington, a Baked Alaska, a box of one dozen doughnuts, and Steak Frites with bernaise sauce.

In each case, one member of the losing team (from each team challenge) was eliminated from the competition, often after minuscule errors.
5. During one Elimination Test, the home cooks were told to reimagine a Canadian dessert classic. Which of these did they face off against?

Answer: Nanaimo Bar

After a harrowing Mystery Box Challenge involving odd ingredients from the three judges' own restaurants (including durian, squab, and pork belly), Danielle was allowed to select the dish used in the next Elimination Test which, no matter what, would be an intriguing Canadian dessert. Choosing between butter tarts, blueberry grunt, and nanaimo bars, she chose the third of these, forcing the other eight home cooks to make do.

The catch was, the cooks needed to elevate and reinvent the dish; the nanaimo bar needed to be an inspiration. Ultimately, Carly ended up going home for her dish.
6. The final eight were tasked with operating food trucks outside what Toronto landmark?

Answer: Nathan Philips Square

In the Team Challenge for the final eight, two teams of two needed to test out their street (food) smarts by operating one of two food trucks outside Toronto's City Hall building in Nathan Philips Square. Tammara led one-- she chose the Mexican truck-- and Eric led the other-- opting for Italian. What resulted was a taco from Tammara's team and a stuffed meatball sandwich from Eric's.

After two hours of prep time and a full lunch service, Tammara's blue team won with a $15 margin, saving the four of them from a truly difficult Pressure Test.
7. During this season's sole tag team challenge, six of the final seven home cooks were required to make which of these complex meals?

Answer: Dim sum

The top seven faced off against a Mystery Box containing Nova Scotia lobsters and, after forty-five minutes, Mike won with a deconstructed lobster roll. As a result, Mike had the opportunity not to choose the dish which his competitors would be taking on in the next Elimination Test, but what home cooks would work together to bring a five-piece dim sum meal to fruition.

After eighty minutes, Tammara and Pino won the challenge with Eric and Kaila behind them. Marida and Julie came in last, bringing forth only four of five dishes, and Julie was sent home.
8. The final six home cooks were sent to whose restaurant for the restaurant takeover Team Challenge?

Answer: Claudio Aprile

In the first-ever "MasterChef Canada" restaurant takeover, the final six headed to Chef Claudio's own restaurant in Bayview Village, Toronto: Origin North. There, Tammara and Pino led teams created by the judges in an attempt to serve an entire dinner service based on items from the menu (two starters and two entrees). Ultimately, despite a table walking out for the first time in the restaurant's history, Tammara led the red team to a win, saving Kaila from competing in a Pressure Test for the first time. Pino's team lost and he was sent home during the proceeding Pressure Test.
9. Which "MasterChef" (US) judge ended up acting as a guest judge during this season?

Answer: Joe Bastianich

The final four met with their final Mystery Box and inside the largest of them was Joe Bastianich, one of the judges of the U.S. "MasterChef". For the box, selected by Bastianich himself, the home cooks had to face off against grana padano cheese, veal, calamari, pork sausage, buratta cheese, and Joe's own wine, Vespa Bianco.

After all was said and done, Tammara was eliminated in fourth place having never faced a Pressure Test in the entire competition; ultimately her dish proved too safe and offered two ideas instead of unifying the plate. Kaila won the challenge, granting her a huge advantage for the final Elimination Test, but she was eliminated next.
10. Which home cook became the winner of "MasterChef Canada" season one?

Answer: Eric

In the finale, the final two home cooks, Marida Mohammed and Eric Chong, ended up facing off for the chance at $100,000, the "MasterChef Canada" trophy, and the title of Canada's first MasterChef, creating a three course meal-- an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert-- with three hours of cook time. Ultimately it was Eric who won the competition despite being the youngest home cook on the show.

His Asian-inspired courses wowed the judges and in the end he got a spot on the staff of judge and mentor Alvin Leung.
