 Sally Hitchcock, a glamorous model, was the victim. She was at a party given by Arthur Richardson. She collapsed and died after she was seen talking to David Tanney.

 Since David was the last person everyone saw Sally talking to, they assumed he was the killer.

 Ben had a thought regarding the murder the moment he stepped out on the street. Since he wasn't paying attention, he walked directly into the path of an oncoming car.
