Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Turturro
Answer: Ambrose Monk
Actor John Turturro ("Barton Fink") played Ambrose Monk, the brother of the "defective detective" Adrian Monk. Although they lived in the same city, Adrian and Ambrose had not seen each other for years. It seemed Ambrose was as brilliant and psychologically troubled as his brother. He wrote instructional manuals for a living and was an agoraphobic hoarder, unable to leave his house.
2. Sarah Silverman
Answer: Marci Maven
Comedian Sarah Silverman appeared in two episodes as the obsessive Marci Maven. Initially Marci was obsessed with a TV star; she even falsely confessed to the murder of the star's ex-wife. Monk was brought in to solve the case, at which point Marci transferred her obsession to Monk.
She became "his biggest fan", going through his garbage and wearing his clothes until she was shot and moved her obsession to F. Murray Abraham.
3. Stanley Kamel
Answer: Charles Kroger
Stanley Kamel (1943-2008) played Adrian's therapist, Dr. Charles Kroger. Dr. Kroger was the 'rock' in Monk's life, and the one to whom he turned whenever he was facing a crisis. He saw Monk at least three times a week and was involved in trying to get Monk reinstated with the San Francisco Police Department. Sadly, Stanley Kamel died in real life and Monk was forced to get a new 'shrink'.
4. Melora Hardin
Answer: Trudy Monk
Trudy Monk was Adrian's wife and one true love. When she was murdered, Monk completely fell apart, lost his job as a detective and was unable to work for years. For the first two years of the show, Trudy was only seen in pictures (of actress Stellina Rusich). In the third season, the role was played by Melora Hardin in flashbacks and in Monk's imagination.
5. Tim Curry
Answer: Dale Biederbeck III
Dale Biederbeck III or "Dale the Whale" appeared in several episodes as Monk's rival. Dale was hugely wealthy and just plain huge and confined to his bed in a prison cell. His hold on Monk stemmed from the fact that he claimed to have information on Trudy's killer. Tim Curry ("Rocky Horror Picture Show") played the role which was also played by Adam Arkin and Ray Porter in different episodes.
6. Traylor Howard
Answer: Natalie Teeger
Natalie Teeger came from a wealthy family and was a widow with a teenage daughter. She came to Monk for help after two break-ins at her home. He accepted the case, solved it and even saved her daughter's fish. He then offered her the job as his 'personal assistant' and, despite all his phobias, she agreed. Traylor Howard ("Two Guys and a Girl") played the role of Natalie with patience and caring.
7. Kane Ritchotte
Answer: Benjy Howe
Benjy was the eleven year old son of Trevor Howe and Monk's original nurse, Sharona, formerly from New Jersey. His parents were divorced and he lived with his mother in San Francisco. Benjy was a good kid who admired Monk for his brilliance and sometimes showed Monk's abilities off to his friends. The character was played by both Kane Ritchotte and Max Morrow.
8. Virginia Madsen
Answer: T.K. Jensen
Toward the end of the series, we met T.K. Jensen, a woman who was employed by a consumer magazine to review household appliances. It was at a trade show that she encountered divorced Captain Stottlemeyer and, in a short time, their relationship heated up and eventually led to marriage. We also learned that the "T" in T.K. stood for Trudy. Virginia Madsen is an accomplished actress who has appeared in films such as "Dune", "Joy" and "Sideways".
9. Tony Shalhoub
Answer: Adrian Monk
If you don't know this one, this quiz is probably not for you. Tony Shalhoub is both the actor who played Adrian Monk and one of the executive producers of the show. His portrayal of a troubled detective with OCD who was still coping with the loss of his wife was spot on.
He was both annoying and sympathetic at the same time. Tony Shalhoub first came to prominence as Antonio Scarpacci in "Wings", and has gone on to appear in "Nurse Jackie" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".
10. Bitty Schram
Answer: Sharona Fleming
Adrian Monk was so distraught by the loss of his wife that he was forced to hire a nurse. Sharona Fleming became both his assistant and his caretaker. Sharona was a "no-nonsense" woman with a caring heart, and the divorced mother of Benjy. Sharona was from New Jersey where she met and married her husband Trevor. Benjy was born when she was eighteen. Bitty Schram was wonderful in the role; it was too bad she left because of a contract dispute.
11. Hector Elizondo
Answer: Neven Bell
After the death of Adrian Monk's psychiatrist, Dr. Kroger, who died of a heart attack, Adrian was introduced to Dr. Neven Bell as a replacement. At first Monk was skeptical of the therapist since he hated change of any kind. However, after several sessions and being shown that Neven was a palindrome, Monk accepted his new doctor.
Hector Elizondo, who played Dr. Bell, is a wonderful actor who has been in the films "Pretty Woman", "The Princess Diaries" and "Valentine's Day".
12. Emmy Clarke
Answer: Julie Teeger
Julie Teeger was the teenage daughter of Monk's assistant Natalie. Like her mother, Julie was patient and caring when it came to Monk. Julie's father, Mitch, was a Navy fighter pilot shot down over Kosovo and, occasionally, Monk would be a surrogate father.
She thought that Monk was strange but she was impressed by his powers of deduction, saying "He's just like Velma from Scooby-Doo". Julie was played by Emmy Clarke who was also in the movie "Apartment Troubles".
13. Ted Levine
Answer: Leland Stottlemeyer
Before Monk had a breakdown after his wife was murdered, he was a detective in the San Francisco Police Department. After several of Monk's partners refused to work with him, he was paired with Leland Stottlemeyer and they became friends. Stottlemeyer was promoted and was forced to suspend Adrian after his breakdown.
When he became Captain, and Monk began to recover, Leland hired Monk as a consultant. Ted Levine played the role with firmness and compassion.
14. Glenne Headly
Answer: Karen Stottlemeyer
Versatile actress Glenne Headly played the underappreciated wife of Leland Stottlemeyer, and the mother of their two sons. She was an environmentalist and filmed documentaries. One of the issues of contention between Karen and her husband was that he didn't watch her documentaries.
Although they seemed to get closer after her car accident, they wound up divorcing. Glenne Headly, who had also appeared in a number of films, died in 2017 from a pulmonary embolism.
15. Jason Gray-Stanford
Answer: Randy Disher
Finally, we have the somewhat musical, overly emotional and occasionally dopey Lieutenant Randy Disher. He served as second in command to Captain Stottlemeyer in the San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Squad. He often acted as a comic foil and was known for some ridiculous theories on the cases on which he was working.
At the end of the series, it was revealed that he had moved to New Jersey and married Sharona. Jason Gray-Stanford played Lieutenant Disher.
