More "Mentalist" Seasons 1-4 Trivia Quiz

This is a follow-up to my first "Mentalist" quiz. Like its predecessor, it focuses on general developments in the first four seasons of the show (with the info section giving away bits from season 5, too) rather than specific episodes.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Judging by the quantities in which he consumes it, which is Patrick Jane's favorite drink?

Answer: tea

Patrick is often shown having a cup of tea, offering someone else a cup, asking for one, or indeed helping himself to one in someone else's house.
In episode 2 of season 5, "Devil's Cherry," Patrick's passion for tea has some unforeseen consequences when he inadvertently drinks some tea laced with belladonna, causing him to hallucinate his deceased daughter, Charlotte, as a teenager.
2. After the departure of Madeleine Hightower as SAC, who assumes her post?

Answer: J.J. LaRoche

J.J. LaRoche is first introduced in season 3 as the new head of Internal Affairs, investigating the murder of Red John associate Todd Johnson. He is a somewhat ambiguous, hard-to-read character. When Hightower is framed for Johnson's murder and has to run, LaRoche takes over her duties as SAC.

In the first episode of season 4, he announces that his post was always meant to be a temporary solution and says goodbye to Lisbon (giving her an unexpected hug) and her team. His successor is Luther Wainwright (sometimes spelled "Wainright"), a very young and open-minded agent. Wainwright is killed in friendly fire in the season 4 finale.
3. In the season 2 finale "Red Sky in the Morning" as well as the season 3 episode "Red Moon", Red John gives an enigmatic message to Patrick Jane in the form of a William Blake poem. Which poem?

Answer: The Tyger

In "Red Sky in the Morning", Red John saves Patrick's life by killing two students who chose Jane to be the star in their next snuff movie. When he approaches Patrick, who is bound to a chair, all he does is whisper the first few lines of the poem in his ear ("Tyger, tyger, burning bright...").
In "Red Moon", Todd Johnson - freshly found out as the killer in this episode -is set on fire in his holding cell before Patrick can talk to him (which he requested, claiming he had a secret to share). Before Johnson dies in the hospital, he whispers, "Tiger, tiger" to Jane, thus revealing that he knew Red John.
It is due to the murder of Johnson that J.J. LaRoche is brought in to investigate and suspicion is planted that Red John has a contact inside the CBI. Both J.J. LaRoche and Director Bertram are later shown to refer to William Blake, which keeps the audience guessing as to who the mole may be until the very end.
4. What is the name of the medium who helps Lisbon's team in "Seeing Red" and returns in a more pivotal role later on?

Answer: Kristina Frye

Kristina Frye (played by Leslie Hope) is a spiritualist and medium who, other than Jane, "embraces her gift" and tries to convince him to do the same. It is not quite clear whether she is a fraud, like Jane used to be, or genuinely believes in her powers.
In the season 2 finale, Kristina is seen on TV, urging Red John to reach out and seek help. Patrick realizes that she makes the same mistake he made six years ago. Later, Kristina disappears and is found again early in season 3 in a catatonic state. During a séance, she briefly talks again, claiming that she is already dead and does not remember who killed her.
The mental disorder where people believe they are actually dead is known as the "Cotard delusion" or "Walking Corpse Syndrome".
5. In the season 1 finale, it is revealed that Red John - under the name "Roy Tagliaferro" - sometimes visited with a woman named Rosalind Harker. Which of the following statements does NOT apply to Rosalind Harker?

Answer: She is aware that Roy Tagliaferro is Red John

Patrick describes Rosalind as a "lonely soul". She knew Red John as "Roy Tagliaferro", a friend of Sheriff Hardy's, who liked to sit with her and listen to her playing Bach on the piano. Rosalind is a very calm and collected person who insists that "Roy Tagliaferro" is a kind and gentle soul. Patrick Jane is spooked to find Red John's trademark smiley face in her house, but since she is blind and never saw his face, Red John does not kill her.
In the season 4 premiere, Jane asks Rosalind to come to the morgue and feel the face of the man he shot in the season 3 finale, believing him to be Red John. Rosalind, however, says that the dead man is not Roy Tagliaferro, which proves to Jane that Red John deceived him and is still alive.
Rosalind is played by Alicia Witt.
6. A particularly fascinating episode in season 4 is "Blinking Red Light," which marks the return of Red John after he was presumably shot and killed by Patrick. In order to stop a killer, Patrick deliberately lures Red John out, essentially counting on him committing another murder. Which nickname is given to the serial killer who meets his demise in this episode?

Answer: The San Joaquin Killer

This episode deals with another serial killer, the San Joaquin Killer. Patrick soon suspects the right person - blogger and journalist James Panzer - but is lacking the necessary evidence to charge him. When he and Panzer are both guests in a TV discussion about the San Joaquin Killer, Patrick deliberately manipulates Panzer into bragging about the cleverness of the killer and disparaging Red John in the process. Later that night, Panzer is killed by Red John. I was reminded of "The Silence of the Lambs" in this episode, seeing as the cop relied on the serial killer to set something right, however twisted that may sound.
7. When a known accomplice of Red John, Todd Johnson, is set on fire and killed by Red John's mole while in custody, J.J. LaRoche makes a list of five suspects. Who of the following characters is NOT on that list?

Answer: Luther Wainwright

Getting his hands on that list is one of Patrick's top priorities throughout season 3; he even hires a cat burglar to steal it from LaRoche's house. In the two-part finale, "Strawberries and Cream", LaRoche finally caves in and hands the list over. Apart from LaRoche himself and the now-exonerated Madeleine Hightower, it comprises four other suspects: Brenda Shettrick (the CBI's PR manager), Oscar Ardiles (from the D.A.'s office), CBI Director Gale Bertram, and the FBI liaison officer and Grace Van Pelt's fiancé, Craig O'Laughlin (who turns out to be the one).
8. Lorelei Martins is Patrick Jane's second lover since the death of his wife.

Answer: False

Not true. She is the first.
Lorelei is another "disciple" of Red John who makes contact with Jane after he fakes his breakdown in the season 4 finale, "The Crimson Hat". She posts bail for him when he is arrested in Las Vegas and later visits him in his motel room. After spending the night together, she reveals herself to be an associate of Red John, and Patrick's reaction after she leaves makes it clear to the audience that this is what he expected.
Lisbon is visibly shocked when Lorelei reveals at the end of the episode that she and Jane were lovers, and she tries to talk to Jane about it in the first episode of season 5. During that conversation, she mentions that he has not been with a woman since Angela's death.
9. Let us dwell on the topic of lovers a moment longer: through season 4, who of the main characters has not been shown to have a lover at some point?

Answer: They all have

Rigsby and Van Pelt were the first of the team to share an on-screen kiss in season 2 (episode "Red Scare").
Cho was shown to have a girlfriend in "Blood In, Blood Out" (season 2) and had an affair with his CI, Summer Edgecombe, in late season 4 and early season 5.
Lisbon had a one-night stand with Walter Mashburn in the season 3 episode "Red Hot". Mashburn had previously appeared as a murder suspect in a different episode and shown interest in Lisbon even then.
As we have just learned in the previous question, Patrick Jane shared a night with Lorelei Martins. He also went on a date with Kristina Frye and was kissed by murderess Erica Flynn.
10. More than once, Jane has said "Love you" to Lisbon, and Lisbon has told Jane she hates him. Was it ever the other way around (i.e. did Lisbon ever tell Jane she loves him, and/or did Jane ever tell Lisbon he hates her)?

Answer: No

Incidentally, the season 4 finale, "The Crimson Hat," features one instance of each: after their conversation in the church, Lisbon exclaims, "God, I hate you, Jane!" (something which she has been heard to say before). Later, when the team is faking Lisbon's death, Patrick hugs her and says, "Good luck, Teresa. Love you," right before he shoots her. When Lisbon asks him later what he meant, he claims not to remember what he said, and she does not probe any further. However, in the first episode of season 5, Lorelei Martins tells Jane that she thinks he is "a little bit in love" with Lisbon.
On another occasion, in an early season 1 episode, Patrick pretends to be Lisbon's husband and dismisses her with a casual "Love you."
At this point in the show, it would probably be wildly out of character for these statements to be swapped, i.e. having Lisbon tell Jane she loves him, or Jane tell Lisbon that he hates her.
