Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While the staff is snowed-in during season one's "Blizzard", what do Dr. Lewis and Dr. Greene do to pass the time?

Answer: Put a cast on Carter's leg

They enjoy watching Carter trip over his cast, but regret it when they need as many hands as possible when a 40 car pile-up floods the ER.
2. The painful to watch "Love's Labor Lost" chronicles the birth of a baby and the subsequent death of the mother. Who plays her husband?

Answer: Bradley Whitford

This episode was voted as one of the 100 best episodes of all time out of all television shows. Both Anthony Edwards and Bradley had outstanding performances in this episode.
3. In the episode "The Long Way Around", who plays Duncan, one of the robbers?

Answer: Ewan MacGregor

From season three, this episode is about a hold-up at a convenience store with Hathaway inside. She has to use the crude materials in the store to try to save the lives of two injured people. David Krumholtz played Paul Sobricki, the man who stabbed Carter and killed Lucy. Bradley Whitford was the husband of the woman who died in labor in "Love's Labor Lost" and Mekhi Phifer is currently on "ER" as the caulky Dr. Pratt.
4. One of my personal top five episodes is "The Good Fight". Where do the always quarreling Carter and Lucy share a sentimental heart to heart?

Answer: On County's roof

"The Good Fight" is about Carter and Lucy traveling throughout Chicago in a search to find a father who has the same rare blood type as his daughter who is need of a transfusion. They go from hotels, to a meat packing plant, to Bear's stadium, and to a secret location for cock fights before "cracking" the case of the disappearing father. Later that night Carter tells Lucy that she "fought the good fight, and tomorrow you'll fight another one".
5. The episode "Sticks and Stones" involves Carter traveling with the paramedics for a night run with what results?

Answer: A paramedic dies because of Carter's mistake

Carter accidentally drives the ambulance over a boy at a mob scene and the boy later dies. As he is working on the boy back in the ER, the paramedics head back out to the mob scene. The mob, thinking that it was Carter driving again, shot the driver as revenge. The driver was the paramedic who usually drives, and he later died in the hospital.
6. In the adorable "Great Expectations", what happens when Luka finds Carol at the train platform, in labor?

Answer: She passes out and he carries her to the ER

After she passes out, the charming Dr. Kovac carries Carol from the platform, in the heavy snow, to the ER entrance where Carter, Malucci, and Weaver are waiting for an ambulance to arrive, but they quickly help Luka.
7. For the younger viewers: what is the name of the actor who plays the young boy with muscular dystrophy whom Carter tries to help in "Abby Road"?

Answer: Shia LaBeouf

Shia is on the Disney show "Even Stevens" and will be seen in April as Stanley Yelnats in the big screen adaptation of "Holes". Haley Joel Osment has never been on "ER", Daniel Radcliffe stars as Harry Potter, and Matt Weinberg played Douglas, the young boy whose mother died in "Beyond Repair".
8. An awesome episode, "Be Still My Heart", finishes with Carter being stabbed while the staff parties. The reason that no one could hear him screaming for help was because the music was too loud. What was the song that was playing?

Answer: "Battleflag" by LoFidelity Allstars

"Battleflag" is played again in season 8 when Carter sees Paul Sobricki in the hospital in "Beyond Repair". "Trouble" and "Hanging by a Moment" were both played during Abby and Carter's road trip to Oklahoma, and "Tequila" was played at Carol's almost-wedding.
9. In the excellent "All in the Family", what does Carter ask Benton when Benton doesn't respond to his first question, "How's Lucy doin'?"?

Answer: "Lucy's dead, isn't she?"

This is perhaps one of the saddest scenes ever. Benton is testing Carter's reflexes and he's obviously in pain. When Carter asks about Lucy, Benton quickly changes the subject. Carter realizes and asks "Lucy's dead, isn't she?" and with no response from Benton, Carter leans back, turns his head, and, even though it's dark, you can tell he cries.
10. In "Such Sweet Sorrow", what does Carol do that prompts her leaving the hospital?

Answer: She resuscitates a DNR so she can say goodbye to her family

After bringing back a young mother with ovarian cancer so she can say good bye to her family and listening to the husband afterward, Carol realizes that she has to go see if Doug still loves her because she still loves him. She drops off the girls with her mother, boards a plane, rents a car, and drives to Doug's house. One of the best kept secrets ever was that George Clooney (Doug) appeared in this episode because he wanted to be in Julianna Margulies's last show.
11. The final scene of the season 6 finale, "May Day", is of Carter looking out the window of a plane heading to Atlanta. Who is sitting next to him?

Answer: Dr. Benton

Abby catches Carter injecting something into himself after a trauma and she reports it to Mark. Most of the staff confront Carter about it and tell him that they have Mark's van waiting outside with a ticket for a plane heading to Atlanta where there is a rehab center especially for doctors. Carter repeatedly denies the allegations and "quits", but Benton chases after him and an upset Carter punches him. Benton says that if he wants to fight he's gonna get himself in the van anyway, and Carter just breaks down and cries on Benton's shoulder. We then see Carter staring out the window of a plane and as the camera pulls back, Benton's sitting next to him.
12. The title of the season 7 premiere, "Homecoming", has a double meaning. What is it?

Answer: Carter's return from rehab and a riot at a high school football game

Carter makes the hard journey home from Atlanta and two rival teams play each other at one of the teams' homecoming game. One of the star players of one of the teams is taken out on purpose early on and while he seems to be fine, there is actually something more seriously wrong with him. Riots break out at the game and fans, cheerleaders, players, and even the mascot are brought in with injuries.
13. Where is Carter forced to evacuate the non-infected patients after a chemical spill in the ER in season four's "Exodus"?

Answer: The cafeteria

Patients drenched in a chemical following a building collapse were brought into the ER. The fumes of the chemical caused a few people (including Weaver and Randi) to pass out and the ER had to be evacuated. Due to Weaver's inability to handle the situation, Carter stepped in and led the patients to the cafeteria, while the infected patients were taken to the ambulance bay. Chaos reigns, but overall, this is an awesome episode.
14. In "Rescue Me", what happens in the ER?

Answer: There's an explosion

After a nasty conversation with her mother, Abby goes to check on a patient, leaving Carter to talk with Maggie. All of a sudden, an explosion erupts from the room that Abby just entered. Carter starts screaming her name and runs into the burning room where he finds her lying on the floor.

He carries her out of the room and onto a bed and examines her. I love this scene because I love the idea of Carter and Abby together!
15. With the blood supply stranded at the airport due to a blizzard in "Carter's Choice", Carter must make a decision whether or not to give the remaining units of blood to a rapist in serious condition, or to a more respectable patient. What does he do?

Answer: He saves the blood and autotransfuses

Carter: "I wanted him to die. I saw what he did to that old lady and the others before her, and I wanted him to die. I didn't think he should have that blood. I mean, if someone had come in and they really needed it...If some little kid had been hit by a car, or some old guy had been accidentally shot; if someone like that had died because we wasted the blood on that guy...I don't know.

It was my decision, and I made it, and if he died, I don't know how I'd feel, but I can't say that I'm sorry. (pause) I mean, was I wrong?" Noah Wyle did an amazing job in this episode!
16. What happens after Carter and Abby see Abby's ex-husband Richard at the banquet in "Thy Will Be Done"?

Answer: They let the air out of a tire of Richard's BMW

After Carter's date for the banquet cancels, he asks Abby (whose going out with Luka) to fill in. He shows up at her apartment in a tux and with a limo and she's only in a nice sweater and slacks. They dance at the banquet and a little while later they see Abby's ex-husband and his young date.

He tries to make Abby look like a fool in front of Carter and so when Carter and Abby leave, they let the air out of one of his tires. Before they can do more, Abby slips, hits the car, and sounds the alarm. Carter quickly lifts her to her feet and they speed off in the limo, laughing.

This is a really cute episode!
17. What is the reason for Carter and his teen-aged girlfriend, Rena, to break up in "Sailing Away"?

Answer: She thinks he likes Abby

On their way back to Chicago with Maggie in the back, Carter tells Abby that he and Rena broke up. Abby is surprised that this happened over something as minor as Carter's failure to keep their date, and Carter corrects her and says, "Over you". It turns out that Rena suspects that Carter has a crush on Abby.

They tease each other cutely and when Carter turns back to look at the road, Abby steals a glance at him and smiles.
18. Where was Derek Fossen going when he was shot by a bystander in the park in the exciting season 7 finale, "Rampage"?

Answer: The Greenes' house

Mark was instrumental in moving Derek's son away from him because he suspected abuse, so the distraught father had revenge on all the people who helped do this. He opened fire at a orphanage where he thought his son might be, then at the home of the social worker Adele Newman, who helped move him, and then Mark began to see the pattern.

He tried to call Elizabeth, who was home on her maternity leave, but couldn't reach her. Police were dispatched to the house, but it was empty because Elizabeth was at the market. Fossen was shot running through a park, but before, he had gotten into a cab and given the address to Mark's house.
19. "The Longer You Stay" from season 8 was an awesome episode in which many huge events took place. Which one DID NOT happen?

Answer: Reese and Carla were in an accident and Reese was killed

This great event starts with an exhausted Carter getting "sucked back into the ER vortex" after he signs out. Next, Dr. Benton is notified that his son Reese and ex-girlfriend Carla were involved in a car accident. When he reaches the hospital, he learns that Carla was killed and in one of the saddest scenes ever, he has to explain to his deaf son that "Mommy went away". Dr. Chen and Dr. Malucci gave blood thinner medication to an aortic dissection patient, without realizing that it is an aortic dissection and the mistake killed him. Carter tried to help, but they really need to find Weaver.

However, Weaver was nowhere to be found and wasn't answering her pages, but Carter remembered that she said that she was heading over to Doc Magoo's and as he was running over, he slipped and fell on his back, injuring it again. Meanwhile, Abby and Luka went to a favorite hang-out of Luka's but had a nasty break up when he flirted with a French waitress.
20. In the excellent "Beyond Repair" from the 8th season, Carter yells "you were the same place you were my entire life, someplace else" at his mother after a bad day in which he saw Paul Sobricki again. This line is the same as another cast member's with a parent. Between whom did that conversation take place?

Answer: Doug and his father

Doug waited for his father to show up for a Bulls game, but he didn't. Doug later found him having drinks with someone and yelled at him and some of those words were used when Carter yelled at his mother. Carter: "I got stabbed mom! I got stabbed in the back! Where the hell were you? You were the same place you were my entire life, someplace else!" His mother then speaks, meekly: "So are you trying to blame me for you taking drugs?" Carter: "No, I'm blaming you for not being my mother!" This argument along with the intense confrontation with Paul Sobricki makes this episode awesome!
21. One of the saddest episodes ever, "Orion in the Sky", details Dr. Greene's last day in the ER. As he was leaving, what did he say to Carter?

Answer: "You set the tone Carter"

At this point, Carter is the new Chief Resident and Mark is an Attending. In the pilot episode, Mark was the new Chief Resident who had turned down an offer to enter a private practice and Carter was just a med student. The then Chief of Staff David Morgenstern, had told Mark, "You set the tone Mark" and he certainly did. So, as Mark was walking out of the ER entrance for the last time, it only seemed fitting to pass the torch to Carter and to tell him to "set the tone".
22. In "The Letter", what does Carter do when cleaning out Mark's locker?

Answer: He keeps Mark's stethoscope

Kerry had begun to clean out Mark's locker to save Elizabeth more pain, but she had to stop because she couldn't handle it either. Before, she had told Carter, "Mark's gone. That means you've been here longer than any other doctor. People will look to you to step in and fill the void." To which Carter replied, "Big void". Carter then took over cleaning out Mark's locker, placing things into a box, but when he saw Mark's stethoscope, he took off his own, and put Mark's on: A definite tear-jerker moment!
23. What does Rachel do at the end of "On the Beach", after the funeral?

Answer: She lets go of a balloon

The night before Mark died, he had told her that he used to buy her balloons, but she'd let them go and watch them fly and that it drove her mother crazy. After he said this, Rachel put headphones on his head and played Israel Kamamawiwo'ole's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", a song that he had sung to her when she was a baby. Mark dies during the night and Elizabeth finds him.

At the funeral, a few of the past ER alumni appear, as well as current members. As the limo is leaving the cemetery, something outside catches Rachel's eye and she makes the driver stop.

She approaches a For Sale sign where a few balloons are waving. She unties a purple one and lets it go, watching it fly away, and the show ends: another tear jerker moment!
24. In the exciting season finale of season 8, "Lockdown", what does Carter call Abby?

Answer: The "Obi-Wan Kenobi of nursing"

However, Carter does call Abby his girlfriend after this episode!
25. In "The Letter", Carter walks out of the ER to find a med student recovering from a gruesome trauma and says almost the exact same speech that Mark told him after his first. Who is the med student?

Answer: Michael Gallant

This scene was filmed to echo that of a scene between Mark and Carter in the pilot, "24 Hours". At that point, Mark is Chief Resident (what Carter is now) and Carter is a med student. Carter says almost exactly what Mark told him: "You know, there's two kinds of doctors.

There's the kind that get rid of their feelings, and the kind that hold onto them. If you're gonna hold onto your feelings you're gonna get sick every once in a while. It's apart of it. You know, people come in here, and they're sick, and they're bleeding, and sometimes they're dying, and they need our help. And helping them is more important than how we feel."
