Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Usagi mean?

Answer: Rabbit

Her full name, Tsukino Usagi (remember, in Japan the surname [family name] goes first) literally means "rabbit of the moon" (tsuki = moon, no = of), although the kanji of her surname actually means "moon field".
2. What is the translation for the name Hotaru?

Answer: Firefly

Her full name, Tomoe Hotaru, means "firefly sprouting from the Earth".
3. Mamoru's name translates as which of the following?

Answer: Guardian/Protector

His surname, Chiba, combines the kanji of "chi" which means earth and "ba" which means location, so his full name would be roughly translated as "local guardian".
4. Which of these is not a translation of the name Makoto?

Answer: strength

The hiragana in Makoto's name translates to truth or sincerity; with different hiragana, you get the translation of devotion.
5. The kanji "ou" found in the surnames of Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna means what?

Answer: King

Hotaru is the only outer senshi without this kanji in her name.
6. The hiragana used in Haruka's name translates to what?

Answer: Far away, distant

The kanji "ten" in her surname (Ten'oh) means "sky or heaven", so her full name would roughly translate to "Distant Heaven King/Ruler".
7. Which Sailor Starlight's given name translates to "night sky"?

Answer: Yaten

Seiya translates roughly to "star field", and Taiki means "atmosphere".
8. The name Kakyuu means what?

Answer: Fireball

The kanji for "ka" means "fire", and the kanji for "kyuu" means "ball" or "sphere".
9. The hiragana in Setsuna's given name translates as what?

Answer: Moment

The kanji for "mei" in her surname means dark, so her full name (Meiou Setsuna) is roughly "Momentary Dark King".
10. What did Takeuchi Naoko base the names of most of her villains off of?

Answer: All of these

Beryl, Kunzite, Nephrite, Zoicite, and Jadeite are all gemstones. Kaolinite is a mineral, and the names of the Witches 5 are all derived from minerals. Tigers-eye, Hawks-eye, and Fisheye are all gemstones (the latter two are forms of the first) and Zirconia is from "cubic zirconia", which are also known as fake diamonds. The black moon sisters' names are from gems or minerals, and the rest of the black moon (excluding the phantom) are obviously gems. The original four anima-mates have metals in their names (Tin Nyanko, Aluminum Siren, Lead Crow, Iron Mouse).
