Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There were returning champions on the syndicated "Name That Tune".

Answer: False

Nope, two contestants per week. The only time the champ would return was to identify a mystery tune for $100,000.
2. How was the $100,000 grand prize paid out on the Tom Kennedy version?

Answer: $10,000 a year for the next 10 years

This was the 1970's. So an annuity had to be on the Kennedy version. On the Jim Lange version, it was $90,000 in prizes and $10,000 in cash.
3. Tommy Oliver was the orchestra leader on the entire syndicated run.

Answer: False

Tommy was replaced by Stan Worth in 1978. Tommy also lead another band on "Face The Music". And NO! It's not the same Tommy Oliver that Jason David Frank portrays on "Power Rangers".
4. Tom Kennedy hosted "Name That Tune" on NBC.

Answer: True

In 1977, NBC replaced "50 Grand Slam" (also hosted by Kennedy) with "Name That Tune". The network version had the mystery tune round where a contestant could win $25,000 (instead of $100,000). So for months, Tom hosted the syndicated and NBC versions of "Name That Tune".
5. Which is not a game?

Answer: Play With The Band

"Build-A-Note" was where each orchestra member would play. The song would start with drums, then add bass, then guitar, then piano, all the way up to horns. This game was on the NBC version only.
6. Kathie Lee Johnson joined the game show in 1976.

Answer: True

Kathie Lee (Gifford) was the La-La Lady from 1976-78. She left the show to do "Hee Haw Honeys" and then met her future husband, Frank. Then came Regis and that was her final answer!
7. From 1978-81, there was also a second band featured that played rock music. Who led that band?

Answer: Steve March Torme

Steve March Torme is related to both Hal March ("$64,000 Question") and Mel Torme ("The Velvet Fog").
8. Which is false about the "Mystery Tune" contest?

Answer: Confetti and balloons dropped

The contestant heard 20 seconds of the music, then had 10 seconds to identify the tune. If the contestant was right s/he won $100,000 as sirens sounded and people came up on stage. I've witnessed two females that did it (the winning tunes; "March of The Gladiators" and "Dancing On The Ceiling").
9. Jim Lange once had two contestants that went on each other's throats.

Answer: True

No, they didn't go on Jerry Springer! On that episode when they were playing "Bid-A-Note", they started acting up each time during the bidding.
10. What's the name of the new game featured on the Lange version?

Answer: Tommy Oliver's Tune Topics

A topic was picked (IE: Color My World) and songs that contained the name of a color were featured.
